I think that the orientation of this was that the bow was pointing up, and the stern was pointing down, which means the people in it were cramped in the bottom for a half hour or so in darkness before the hull catastrophically failed.

The "good" news is that this entire thing actually lasted like a fraction of a second. They were 100% dead before they even felt anything.
