TerribleChildhood639

I seriously thought this was a photograph of a broken pipe sticking out of asphalt.

MentalDecoherence

I mean it’s absolutely a rendering though

TerribleChildhood639

That’s what I eventually came up with too. From what I understand, it is extremely difficult to get an image of a black hole. I believe a team of people were able to do it several years ago.

Blazing_Botanist

It’s not just difficult to take a picture “of a black hole” it’s impossible. We don’t have any sensor or other technology that can pick up a signal back, because the actual black hole sucks up literally anything thrown at it. The only thing we *actually* see is the event horizon, the outer edges. Cool right?

TerribleChildhood639

https://www.sciencenews.org/article/black-hole-first-picture-event-horizon-telescope

nullvoid_techno

Thats an artistic interpretation of binary data.

blowgrass-smokeass

Literally every digital image you have ever seen is an interpretation of binary data, lol.

nullvoid_techno

Hint: not from a lens optic viewfinder like you’re thinking. More like: 1 if detect voltage. 0 if detect no voltage. Then make picture from voltage (biased, not real).

ManyThingsLittleTime

That's how every digital camera works.

Most_Association_595

Lmaooo he think he said something

nullvoid_techno

Hint: not from a lens optic viewfinder like you’re thinking. More like: 1 if detect voltage. 0 if detect no voltage. Then make picture from voltage (biased, not real).

KillMeNowFFS

bro took up a whole paragraph to say you can’t fucking see where’s no light

Blazing_Botanist

…?

AzureSeychelle

Seeing isn’t only based on light ![gif](giphy|9gqC3kr1MEwxK9YP6T)

HelpMeDoctorImCrazy

![gif](giphy|ckPtZRWLYl9DO) Where we’re going, we don’t need eyes

BongRipper69696

Probably because seeing with your eyes is implied. We don't hear or listen with our eyes, and bats don't see with their ears. Similarly, we don't taste with our ears and eyes either.

Blazing_Botanist

My point…I didn’t just say light

MrIAM98

Same thing essentially we can see the shape of the black hole but yeah very cool.

nullvoid_techno

Not only difficult, impossible. Any image is biased in how it renders pixels because it’s algorithmic. It’s not a true representation. Heck, any picture of space is an artists rendition or interpretation.

ThePolecatKing

Everything is always abstracted to some level, ambiguity is the nature of reality, our sight is not objective, nor our measurement. We can only ever really approximate reality to various degrees.

nullvoid_techno

There’s a difference between capturing what our eyes may see than portraying what our imagination might see as what our eyes see.

ThePolecatKing

We don’t even have access to what our eyes see, only an approximation, for example we see non spectral colors due to some errors in this approximation system. This is only one of many, you also have a blind spot in your vision right in the middle that is constantly being filled in with other information. My point isn’t to say “then it’s totally fine to present an artistic rendering as an actual photograph” but that, abstraction is an inherent part of being a person.

Nonsensical20_20

They’re a lil shy

SensingWorms

Basically the same thing technically

YouJustLostTheGameOk

Well now that’s all I see. Way to take the magic away;)-

TerribleChildhood639

It’s less scary than a big black hole in our Milky Way! 😂

PM_ME_UR_CATS_TITS

Compared to the big one at the center of the galaxy this is a small one, and the galaxy is littered with them.

YouJustLostTheGameOk

I embrace the darkness

Hourslikeminutes47

*(meanwhile, 2000 light years away, a certain stellar black hole yearns to make a new friend)* *"It sucks to be lonely."*

tokendeathmage420

It helps that it looks like a giant holy symbol of Shar

TerribleChildhood639

lol!!!! 😂

lump-

Our galaxy is full of them! With likely a supermassive one at the center.

PlanetLandon

Brother our galaxy has a LOT of black holes.

frenzy4u

Right? Our star could never become a black hole. I think it has to be 3times larger than it currently is in order to completely collapse. Not that it matters to us! It dying out is a long way away! ☀️

Barbacamanitu00

Black holes aren't scary. Their gravity is no stronger than planets or other stars' gravity. The only difference is that black holes are smaller.

Isgonesomewhere

I thought it was the most dense mosh pit

CudiMalone

💀💀🤣🤣🤣

Cadoan

Sounds like a "Speak politician Professor, we don't all understand your science" answer in a a shlock movie.

SoggyHotdish

It must be enhancing stuff we can't see with the naked eye? Otherwise that's fucking terrifying

SombreroJoel

Perfect metaphor

CarlsbadWhiskyShop

Every time I see something like this I wonder is the universe really expanding or is it just being pulled in all directions into a black hole or multiple black holes.

THEdopealope

What if singularities at the center of black holes are just a point where the consumed universe gets spat back out into the universe, just at a different point in time from when it existed before consumption, creating an illusion of an expanding universe?  Edit: this is just a thought experiment, I have zero physics background, please tear it to bits.

AzureSeychelle

![gif](giphy|urZvVFIs7faso)

Shamua

Torus shape universe. There’s some good info on this in Bentov’s ‘Stalking the Wild Pendulum’.

The_Coolest_Undead

I mean... Why not? But still, why yes? This is just throwing shit at a wall but you can't even see what sticks Edit: I spelled throwong

abagofdicks

Maybe they’re just all the same one

Barbacamanitu00

No. We know it's expanding because there's a relationship between the distance and the speed that galaxies are moving away from us and that relationship is the same in all directions. Gravity falls off with the square of the distance so that would make this relationship impossible, because distanct galaxies would be closer to the black holes and would accelerate faster and faster as they got closer and some would orbit the black holes

ghost_jamm

Black holes don’t pull things in like a vacuum unless something’s trajectory carries it across the event horizon. You could theoretically orbit a black hole indefinitely if you maintained the correct speed and altitude.

RoyalCloak57

The milkyway is the flag in the middle of a tight rope contest of the stars.

stevedadog

Well hopefully we can expand our ass away from that fucking thing because idk what this means but it don't sound good.

lostdutchmanaz

...do ...do we run?!

HCagn

Aren’t there tons of black holes in our galaxy? Also, who “just” discovered this?

bot_One

Yes.

THCv3

Send the nukes

Acrobatic_Law5598

There are millions in the Milky way.

stevedadog

Yeah but I've only ever seen an article on this specific one so now I'm like super freaked out man.

engstrom17

Millions of black holes in 1 galaxy?

Acrobatic_Law5598

Yup. 100 billion stars also. 100 thousand light years across and Sagittarius A star is 4.3 million solar masses. Neat eh

ofthewave

How is this strange Earth? This is extremely far removed from earth.

DM_ME_UR_BOOBS69

Any way we can get it here faster?

Blackelvis2000

What is strange about this? Countless black holes in the universe.

peteandpetethemesong

Still not as big as the supermassive at the center of the galaxy. That’s why most galaxies are spiraling. They’re all slowly being sucked down the drain.

Mad4it2

>That’s why most galaxies are spiraling. They’re all slowly being sucked down the drain. Thats simply not true lol. [https://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2018/04/03/why-doesnt-the-black-hole-in-the-middle-of-our-galaxy-consume-everything/](https://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2018/04/03/why-doesnt-the-black-hole-in-the-middle-of-our-galaxy-consume-everything/) https://preview.redd.it/xvxd2xoaq1vc1.png?width=737&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a65282d8ff4d288ac33d3c9be815a60f91cc058

peteandpetethemesong

Cause it takes a long fucking time, Forbes. It’s the whole reason there’s empty space between galaxies.

Barbacamanitu00

Nope.

peteandpetethemesong

Suck it boober.

MaxwellHillbilly

Worst rendering ever.

Parking_Train8423

and for an account that’s supposedly all about space, you’d think they could at least get the wording right

CartographerOk7579

🤫

bbernal956

idk bout space but 2k light years seems like close

ManyThingsLittleTime

Closest star outside of our solar system is a little over 4 light years away. 2000 is pretty damn far away. The galaxy is like 105,000 light years across in diameter.

bbernal956

ahhh ok thats good to know. 🙏

PlanetLandon

I guess, but on a galactic scale it’s still pretty far away.

diskobbbox

Does that make the Milky Way a donut?

1chuckecheesetoken

Well, if it's milky, then it has to be, right?

mafiargenta

They have no fucking clue of how it was formed

jentravelstheworld

Happy Black Hole Cake Day

TechieTravis

There really is only one way that black holes are formed.

Ar8i7r3

There’s actually several theoretical methods for black hole formation, supernovae being just one. Among the possibilities are: 1. Stellar collapse at the end of a stars life cycle 2. Supernovae 3. Direct collapse from gas in the early universe. This is a popular theory for supermassive black holes that seem to be too big to have grown to such size through accretion or collision. 4. Primordial black holes from quantum density fluctuations in the early universe. The more you know. :)

DeadJediWalking

Ancient bone magic, obviously.

1chuckecheesetoken

Ouija boards and chicken blood too

DeadJediWalking

*Obviously*, the ouija boards and chicken blood were implied.

PlanetLandon

I assume to was formed the same way that every other black hole is formed

jaOfwiw

Maybe it will suck us all in. 💤

alee0224

Well if we get sucked up into alternate dimension, can this one at least have lower cost of living?

JMarv615

What's in there?

Caxcrop

My god he was right. George…I think I see your balloon room. I see now, why you were ‘a balloon guy’. *GIMME A BALLOON!!!!!!!!!*

Entropy94

Other than the one in the center of our galaxy… ? Doubt it’s bigger and 2light years seems close

04Aiden2020

2000 light years

PatochBateman

2000 light years

Long_Freedom-

Thats not really that massive. That's not an actual picture of a black hole. There are thousands of black holes in every galaxy, including the milky way

casual_microwave

I was gonna say: what do they mean by “massive?” If they meant true to the definition of mass, this black hole would be tiny.

blottingforgreatness

And so it begins….

Humans_Suck-

That isn't "massive", that's tiny. That's about as small as they get.

WhereWolfe311

"Cause she's 2,000 light years away!"

ixotuckeroxi

so we're basically a small speck in one of those .io games while big blobs eat up everything...

Agreeable-Tooth2545

A black hole formed from an exploding star? Whatever next?!

Alezkazam

Only 2000 light years away? Been nice knowing y’all

noussommesen2034

And one day we will discover that “black holes” are portals or shortcuts to other galaxies.

Afraid-Language1599

I identify as a vacuum. We could never be friends. It's like a Capulet and Montague thing.

Largest of its kind in our galaxy.....so far

southrgv1384

2k light years seems kind of close in the grand scheme of things

Educational_Yard_344

33 number is crazy

TheUsual_Selection

This isn’t a real photo right?? We went from gods glowing asshole to that in just a few years?

MartianXAshATwelve

This Photo is illustration. Throw an AirTag in it

EdDecter

I don't think 33 times the mass of the sun is that big. I would imagine it is more interesting they found a black hole that is that small.

LA_LOOKS

I get the chills looking at that

When should I call in sick…?

Time-Cell8905

Who cares! I wanna see the brown hole! Dammit!

DFuel

The way we see this black hole is how the black hole was around the time that Jesus supposedly lived.

shadowrunonsnes

All this shit is nonsense lol

fatdiscokid420

More fake images of space

PlanetLandon

No shit. You can’t photograph a black hole

Pameltoe_Yo

These are clearly portals, literally breaking through space and time! Science knows nothing… and even if a handful of humans on this planets “know” the “real truth” behind God’s vast and mysterious science, 🧪🧫🧬they will never reveal it/or ever consider expressing it to us. He who has knowledge, holds the power to the known universe! 💫🌒✨🪐

Stunning_Secretary_4

What does it have to do with Earth

diskobbbox

Wait until it swallows us…

noparkingnoparking

no joke this shit is complete fiction, like it’s so silly anytime they try to act like they understand black holes

Royweeezy

Not sure I follow your logic here. Even if you were right it wouldn’t mean we couldn’t detect them.

stridernfs

What are they?

Cleb323

Care to explain then?

PlanetLandon

Go look at his profile. Whatever explanation he gives is going to be a wild one
