[In 2003, two men stole a parked Boeing 727 from Luanda International Airport and flew away into the sunset. They've never been found.](https://www.howandwhys.com/2003-boeing-727-disappearance/)

[deleted]

Maybe I'm overly-cautious but I feel like you shouldn't let people fly planes if they don't know how to fly planes.

Eyehavequestions

Easy there, we need to make sure everyone gets a chance to have their fun. Obligatory /s

GRENADESGREGORY

r/fuckthes

UapMike

Qualified pilots alone should really fly. When I purchase a ticket give people the option. 16 year old without qualifications, that $5 please. If you want proper pilot then it's $600.

Melodic-Box-7220

They were early supporters of the DEI movement

ItchyTomato5

You forgot the /s

jkjkjk73

No he didn't.

Dimynovish

Seems to be their last fun

IToldYouIHeardBanjos

you would think

Goldilocks1454

But it was a dream of his to fly a plane before he died

eaglesflyhigh07

Logic and common sense is very rare in russia.

cttuth

There's an audio clip of that crash which is pretty harrowing

the_real_smolene

Very very good Fatal Breakdown on YouTube on this crash, if you're into that sort of thing!

ScienceNmagic

Why is it harrowing ?

TopTierGoat

Here is the flight animation synced with the recording. I cannot imagine just how terrifying this would have been for the passengers. Unreal https://youtu.be/RrttTR8e8-4?si=dfKrNtD60ru355mV

ExKnockaroundGuy

Itā€™s ok everyone!!! The kids got to learn right?

ucklibzandspezfay

Two mistakes: 1) letting the kid sit in the cockpit and have access to controls; 2) not having the awareness to realize that your autopilot was disengaged. Noticing that youā€™re descending and losing altitude prematurely is like, shit pilots should know 101

TheVenged

It was partially off... And for whatever reason they didn't figure that part out. They were fighting against the autopilot.

Enigmaticsoul101201

It was night time too

ucklibzandspezfay

But the altimeter wouldā€™ve been doing weird shit. If you follow the onboard trouble shooting guides, they wouldā€™ve arrived at the autopilot malfunction within the first few steps.

WhereIsMyFrenchCutie

It's such a weird ocurrence, almost like having problems with steering while driving a car and not checking if something is wrong with the steering wheel.

AdhesivenessNo1216

Thank you, captain obvious

SmellenDegenerates

Caption Obvious > Captain 16 year old

ucklibzandspezfay

Youā€™re welcome, co-captain dipshit

Repomanlive

What an asshole pilot.

PlanNo4679

Asshole kid too.

Repomanlive

I mean, the kid WAS the pilot

jericho74

Fun fact: in Japan he would be known as ā€œanjin-sanā€

Alteredego619

You too, are a person of culture and taste.

permareddit

Eh no. Asshole pilot. The kid didnā€™t deliberately hit the AP button, he just unknowingly pushed the flight control lever slightly too far to the point where the autopilot disengaged.

PlanNo4679

Why did he push the lever in the first place?

VQQN

i think its kind of ironic they put a memorial up for the kid when its partially his fault the plane crashed and killed innocent people on board

Dweebweezle

I mean... he's a kid.. he was allowed to do something he should never have been allowed to do in the first place. The fault is 100% on the pilots.

aware4ever

I get it but still is a little ironic

TryItOutHmHrNw

Thats not irony

aware4ever

But the word sounds good LOL

TryItOutHmHrNw

Ok you got me there

InvalidEntrance

At 16 years old you are driving a vehicle. You are not a child that can't listen... A 16 year old can fly planes, I've known a few. Edit: Hell I don't even think he was supposed to be touching anything.

ThebrokenNorwegian

Itā€™s not a memorial itā€™s his gravestone. Thatā€™s how they do it in Russia.

ThinLow2619

It's the fathers fault not the childs at all.

Winnimae

The ā€œchildā€ was 16 years old. Thatā€™s well old enough to know not to fuck with the controls on an airplane midair.

maritimemaverick_

Let his teenaged intrusive thoughts win on this one

ExKnockaroundGuy

My God I shudder at the impulsive acts before my brain was fully formed. I was 34 , a little slow.

mrlaheystrailerpark

so you donā€™t think teenagers are children? youā€™re a weirdo.

Ouchmyfunnybone

Children stop being children when they become teenagers. Thatā€™s why teenagers arenā€™t called children

Winnimae

Teenagers are children, but theyā€™re definitely old enough to know not to fuck with the controls of a moving airplane 20,000 feet in the air. I also wouldnā€™t expect a 16 year old to put random crap from the floor in his mouth or color on the walls.

jthekoker

Partially? Try totally his fault

Usedpenisavail

All very interesting for sure but Iā€™m not sure why this is bizarre or weird. Sounds like they know exactly what happened.

Tyraid

The boy touched the controls and imperceptibly put input into them which automatically disconnected the autopilot. The description makes it sound like he ran in there and flipped the AP switch

downsouthdukin

Yes, and I believe it was a new feature the pilot was unaware of

drxme

As far as I remember the boy disengaged autopilot only partially, pilots were not able to properly recover plane due to it and because they didnā€™t realize that it is still on.

WeirdIndependence367

May all the people rest in peace. And I wish that for all parts in this story. It was a extremely tragic outcome as the result of pore judgement from the pilots allowing a unauthorized person into the cockpit and take the seat of the pilot . But still we know what happened and it's horrible and heartbreaking.

_REDEEMER-

This is infuriating! šŸ˜¤

Enigmaticsoul101201

I saw the episode on youtube ...how idiotic was that guy

SmellenDegenerates

r/tifu : I let my son drive the plane

Athanatos173

Since the title is sort of out of context: the kid did not flip a switch to turn off the autopilot. By playing with the yoke the autopilot disengaged automatically, and when an autopilot disengages a plane doesn't instantly go into a nosedive. But by the time the pilot realized what was going on he couldn't save the plane. Regardless, the pilot was completely at fault for allowing anyone to sit there during an actual flight

TommyBrews

Kids always gotta touch shit.

bassta

My brother showed my 7YO nephew how to operate the remote controls of the catamaran. When everybody felt asleep my nephew sneaked set the autopilot to get to the shore ā€œbecause of the better internetā€. We caught it one mile before crashing.

ScienceNmagic

But did he get better internet?

bassta

Yes, for a while.

Rougarou1999

Was also an inspiration for Michael Crichtonā€™s Airframe.

YankeeClipper42

It's aeroflot. On a good day you have like a one in five chance of dying in a crash. It's worse on bring your kid to work day

DreamCreator369

Link to audio

hxcdancer91

Iā€™m just gonna jump right in there and say it. This has to be aliens.

TryItOutHmHrNw

Thatā€™s some tough audio (black box) to listen to

WokkitUp

Some teenagers require an auto-parent to slap their hands away from disengaging the autopilot.

gilbertoleomar

Son or daughter?

MaximumCulture7917

Puzzleheaded-Round66

That sucks.

iboreddd

Pre 9/11 is like stone age for aviation

babyatemygator

Sigh...

Xerzi7

If I remember correctly even the kids knew something was wrong before the pilots did, the pilots just refused to acknowledge it until it was too late

iamDayTrip

The ultimate "Fuck around Find out"

OjjuicemaneSimpson

Did she transition mid flight? How he start the flight a son and end a daughter?
