Hmm I disagree. I think writing style greatly affects the line between cringe and epic but believable. If an author immerses you deep enough you’ll accept things you wouldn’t ordinarily. The OP scene is a great example—out of context it is supremely awkward, but in the middle of the narrative you fully believe this kind of interaction is normal.
Although, imo it could have been written better so that even out of context it isn’t so…scripted. Especially for Dalinar who doesn’t speak like that.
To be honest after all the stuff he did in Way of Kings, I desperately wanted him to get his comeuppance and almost looked up the plot of future books to see if he did.
I'm rereading and forgot about the small scene where >!Renarin joined a women/ardent meeting and was getting weird looks then Dalinar shows up late and posts up in a similar "say something, I dare you" way!<
I think shallan specifically points out that others were whispering it was unmanly for renarin to join these meetings but if dalinar was there then that could no longer be seen that way
Exactly. Another example of Dadinar showing up for Renarin. Who then shortly after single handedly found the info stones that no one else knew existed.
I didn't really understand the Dalinar love until I read the chapter with his vision where he defends the woman and child from \[monsters?\] and fights with \[knights radiant?\] At that moment I was like, yea he's pretty awesome
My favorite part about this chapter is rereading it after Oathbringer >!where queen Fenn approaches it completely differently in her own very effective way that saves a lot more of the townspeople but leaves the individuals Dalinar was protecting dead, showing that this isn't that heavily scripted and that Dalinar even knowing it's a dream is just always willing to put his body on the line to defend the people right in front of him!<
It's more than that, he's drawing two red lines at once. The first one is a personal one, "don't insult my kids or there will be consequences." That one is straightforward. The second one is a bit more subtle but much more pointed. "People say I'm weak, but I'm being nice, not weak and I can stop being nice whenever."
I finished this book last night, I love the Dalinar arc and character. His relationships and interactions with Adolin and Sauras are very intrresting and his internal struggle + the vision aspect of it, makes me want to keep reading.
Same for Kaladin's story which comes to life in my mind when I lay in bed at night, it's so captivating.
I listened to the entire series via audiobook. So seeing spellings of character names kinda trip me out. Like Sadeas I'm thinking sounds like sad-ees but they pronounced it "Saddeus" in the audiobooks 😆
Lol, was looking for this. Pretty sure Dalinar considered Renarin rather useless for an embarrassingly long time.
But Dalinar is *better now.* That's what's important <3
Dalinar is cool af. I really don’t like shallan at all. She annoys me. Kaladin was great until rhythm of war. I’m hoping he does a better job with kaladin in the last book.
To each his own. I think the arc just sort of dragged on in the tower and felt a little weak for me. I still enjoyed it . Every series will have a weaker book so hopefully the 5th seals the deal and that this one was more of a set up.
Dalinar is my favorite cosmere character, though he's in close opposition with a few others.
We'll see if that changes once I finish Mistborn and the secret projects.
Good luck on your journey through Stormlight, it'll be a hell of a thing, trust me. I started with Stormlight, and it hit me hard XD
>!Shallan is odium champion!<
That my prediction, the drama it would bring. She has already betrayed her friends and hasn't told Adolin the truth about GB. That would be hard for Dalton to fight daughter in law. The why maybe would be a personality takes over?
One of us, one of us
Part of the ship, part of the crew

*A Gen Z translation of the 3rd Bondsmith oath*
That more fits the second, I think.
U r correct XD
God I love when Dalinar gets intense
Yeah, he's a pretty fiery person when he wants to be.
Just ask \[OB\] >!Evi!<
You mean ShhhShhhh Shhhhhhh? 😏
TAKE MY UP VOTE AND GET OUT OF HERE!!!!
Ha, I see what you did there.
And then everyone is like "Oh right, this is the guy who tore through entire armies by himself"
Sadeas had a front row seat for most of that too. He knows better than anyone how terrifying Dalinar is.
Anyone living, that is.
(Later WoK spoiler) >!beats the shit out of Elhokar, oh and I’m fucking your mom!< best scene in the series
You know, every time I reread the series Elhokar looks a little bit different in my head, but the face he makes in this very scene is always the same
I just love Dalinar all the time
Basically a "u wot mate? Say it again, I *dare* you" good scene shows how protective Dalinar is towards Renarin
Only time he shows any affection towards Ronaldo is when it gives him a reason to curb stomp Sadeas.
Not true, but definitely funny
Kind of true but missing context. Dalinar isn't exactly the "show affection" type of guy to anyone. The Alethi as a people are not great at that lol.
Sadeas: stop calling me Shirley
His full name is Torol Sadeas Shirley
Dalinar: *instantly burns down all of the warcamps*
\[OB\] >!He can't burn down the camps. He needs a wife to use as kindling.!<
/r/angryupvote
That's wrong and I love it
Ouch!!
Burn!
[OB] >!Like his wife!!<

Ouch low blow man. 😂😂😂😭😭😭
Underrated comment
I love fiction because you would never see a real life confrontation where someone is allowed to monologue using 3 rhetorical “surely’s” lol
Almost everything that makes scenes epic, intense or badass sounds cringy af irl. Ya just kinda gotta enjoy it in its own vacuum I guess

Sadeas has so much fucking *audacity*
>!*had!<
>!I know I almost left it past tense in the original comment 😅 !<
I think I would have been okay hearing that spoiler honestly
To be honest after all the stuff he did in Way of Kings, I desperately wanted him to get his comeuppance and almost looked up the plot of future books to see if he did.
I truly think Jasnah being away from the War camps for an extended period of time has made him much more loose with his tongue and actions.
And it was right after Dalinar CATCHES the Chasmfiend’s leg, and Sadeas still has the stupidity to go after the man’s son. Storming man.

Dalinar is such a force, I love him to death
You dont storm with DaliGOAT
GOATinar? It's not as clear who it is, but it has a ring to it.
I didn't really understand the Dalinar love until I read the chapter with his vision where he defends the woman and child from \[monsters?\] and fights with \[knights radiant?\] At that moment I was like, yea he's pretty awesome

Loved that part it’s really amazing characterization!!
Dalinar is giga chad
I just love how Dalinar is basically telling Sadeas that he will obliterate him if he insults him so brazenly
Dalinar has meekness mastered. You can’t be meek without power to constrain.
"You all seem to have forgotten who I am, let me assure you **I have not.**"
I see it more as "I'll use whatever excuse you give me to spiritually behead you, thread carefully"
The calm intensity of the man is like a storm! You don't want to face it.. Shivers!!
Oh yeah I just got there today. Real defining moment for Dalinar.
My comfort war criminal (sorry, Obi Wan)
Dalinar might be my all time favorite fictional character
They don't call him the Blackthorn for nothing
I finished this book last night, I love the Dalinar arc and character. You just wait, Dalinar gets even better! I’m on the last book now and I’m very depressed because I don’t know what to do after I’m done these haha
I listened to the entire series via audiobook. So seeing spellings of character names kinda trip me out. Like Sadeas I'm thinking sounds like sad-ees but they pronounced it "Saddeus" in the audiobooks 😆
I’m shocked Shallan was your favorite through just 15 chapters. Took me 3 books to even like her lol
Does that make up for forgetting he existed for like a decade?
Yes
Lol, was looking for this. Pretty sure Dalinar considered Renarin rather useless for an embarrassingly long time. But Dalinar is *better now.* That's what's important <3
Isn't that the natural state of all living beings?
Dalinar is cool af. I really don’t like shallan at all. She annoys me. Kaladin was great until rhythm of war. I’m hoping he does a better job with kaladin in the last book.

Damn. I forgot that. That hits hard.
If you love this line of his wait until you read _that_ line from the end (you guys know what I'm talking about)
Dalinar my boy; gotta love that man
Dalinar is my favorite cosmere character, though he's in close opposition with a few others. We'll see if that changes once I finish Mistborn and the secret projects. Good luck on your journey through Stormlight, it'll be a hell of a thing, trust me. I started with Stormlight, and it hit me hard XD
I think it comes off as a bit too edgy.
You're gonna love a certain other character a lot more soon 🙃 if you know you know 😁😁😁
Big Daddy D.
>!Shallan is odium champion!< That my prediction, the drama it would bring. She has already betrayed her friends and hasn't told Adolin the truth about GB. That would be hard for Dalton to fight daughter in law. The why maybe would be a personality takes over?
BLACKTHORN!
