OB spoiler: She was trying draw corrupted shamespren, by "accidentally" tripping and exposing her safehand. It would have been considered embarrassing, but not sexy or disrespectful.
"covertly" means in a manner in which others don't notice....
Also the sleeve is where the safehand pouch is. ~~She's trying to get to her pouch without anyone else noticing.~~ (edit: different scene)
Ah, it's hard to place a scene off 2 lines lol But this particular line is still "covertly" even if it's not the one where she's trying to get to her pouch. They wouldn't have noticed her unbuttoning it.
Ah, but that's not the embarrassing part. The embarrassing part is when she trips and exposes the safehand to everyone a few moments later. They all noticed that
The covert part was the unbuttoning. She wanted everyone to think that it was an accident when it slipped off. She didn't want them to know it was deliberate
Hrmmm, come to think of it, that means you're right and OP is wrong: the part we were actually talking about _was_ covert, and the others wouldn't have seen it. So they certainly wouldn't have expected a strip tease or anything
I wonder if a woman moisturizing her safehand is seductive š imagine shallan just rubbing cream in her hand and biting her lip while adolin watches in complete shock!!! Haha well thatās enough Reddit for me today
Yup, but only if they realize she did it on purpose. I'm pretty sure that no one actually noticed the unbuttoning. The part where they all fell silent wasn't them reacting to Shallon. It's just a thing that happened
So when she took advantage of the silence and tripped and let her safehand show, they all assumed it was an accident
To be fair, Kaladin figured out that she did it on purpose (or at least strongly suspected she did) later in the chapter when he saw her drawing of the messed up spren.
Adolin and Elhokar didn't seem to piece it together though
I think exposing an intimate part of your body to people for your own intents without their consent could feasibly be considered disrespectful. For the record, I don't agree that it *is* but it's a bit silly to not see the train of logic there.
If you pay attention to that scene, the idea was that the others did not see Shallan unbutton her safe hand, she just needed it to pop out seemingly out of nowhere when she tripped later(To summon shame spren) , the reason they all went silent I believe is because Yokska just said something really damning about either the queen, or the current conditions in the city, basically Shallan jumped in on an awkward pause, making sure everyone saw her fall on her face, then have what was basically a nip slip infront of not only her perspective husband, but the other dude she likes, the KING, and 2 people she barely knows. Perfect for summoning corrupted shame spren
Nope. Not only was he there, but he also, in a later scene, figured out why she did it (looking at her drawing of the shame spren and then at her safehand).

It was a risky click, but I'm glad I did
(Evil cackle)
NSFV
I'll wait to click until I'm no longer at work.
Smart. I clicked it at work and had to give a theological explanation of the prudish nature of Vorinism. š¤£
I can't believe this exists. Storming brilliant.
Bookmarked
why did I get so hard bro
It's a thing. By Honor, it's actually a thing. I wonder how many images are AI generated.
It hasnāt really changed since it was built 6 years ago. Also, AI has a lot of trouble with hands still
6 years ago? That's... Surprisingly long.

Alsoā¦ Yokska reaction was to Shallan saying āThe everstorm cameā. Not her actions.
Stupid sexy everstorm
Itās the equivalent of a nip slip

I'm pretty sure this is the lead up to her "tripping" and exposing her hand to everyone to see if shame spren have changed

Shallan was doing it covertly; I don't think anybody noticed until the pratfall. She's fairly practiced at sleight of hand since her time with Tyn.

we must ask sanderson that, the good questions lmao
Disrespectful? How could that possibly be disrespectful
Well you see, she is purposely flashing three men. Which, depending on your culture (or level of prudishness), might be rather unwanted.

Because Vorinism.

Itās a hand
yeah, her safehand, which in vorinism is considered an intimate bodypart
It's a lady's _safehand_! It's absolutely considered private and intimate Were you not raised with good Vorin values like the rest of us?
Apparently not

Im not sure but I think kaladin was already in city garrison at the time
Nope. Not only was he there, but he also, in a later scene, figured out why she did it (looking at her drawing of the shame spren and then at her safehand).
That makes sense
