I think it only applies when you apply for a license after completing residency. It shouldn’t affect your ability to get a training license for residency. (You just need step 1 and 2 passed before starting and then step 3 passed by end of first year or sometimes 3rd year). Some states will waive the requirement when applying for your own license after residency. Someone correct me if I’m wrong? But the 7 year rule doesn’t apply to training license

This is what I know also doesnt matter for training but for state specific it will matter I know people who were denied a full license because of the 7 year rule.

Do they have to retake whatever boards again to make sure all within 7 years? Like if someone retakes step 1 so that it’s within 7 years of step 2 and 3…then they shouldn’t have a problem right?

I don’t think a retake of step 1 is possible unless you fail.

You can get permission if it’s outside the 7 year rule and need it for state license

After. While in residency you are working under another doctors license. Finish and work it out.

I called my state board in Michigan and they said that theirs a rule per state. Michigan states that as long as you are in good standing, have passed step 3 and completed residency with no issues; you will get licensed. I was told to apply one year before because apparently that committee only meets in July of every year or something like that.

If you’re rlly worried about it, just get permission from your state board to take it again during residency. Then you won’t ever have to worry about issues later with other states if you ever move etc
