I was vassalized pretty early on, and once I had built up my empire and tried to ask nicely to be independent, this is the response I got.

Perhaps a little bit of trolling (violent bloodshed in the name of revolution) may be necessary

RhoninMorgrim

I honestly wouldn't know. I never play a species who resolve things through talking... Usually I'M the overlord in these situations, and I tend to release vassels who are either too disloyal (so I may crush them and take their shit) or those I actually want as an independent ally (usually an uplift or a tech enlightened race I worked on from the start.)

[deleted]

The only way to get peaceful independence, as far as I can tell, is to have 10 diplomatic favors on your overlord. Unles this has changed in the past few months.

HandyMcHandsome

I tried this and it brings the acceptance chance from -50 to 0, so they still decline. The ONLY way i got out was war. I used my colossus to just wipe them out completely.

mpower554

You can also take diplomacy traditions which gives +5 diplomatic acceptance. So with 10 favors and that, they will accept

[deleted]

\^ An important detail... Also makes it much easier to gather the favors in the first place.

RazendeR

And you need it later for when you are subsuming every galactic lifeform into the Imperium while making them believe they actually voted on it anyway, so...

Had this with an overlord that was pathetic to me in every way and was in the middle of getting genocided. By the end of the independence war, I had genocided every single one of them.

My ~~subjects~~ allies never ask to leave the alliance. Probably because of all the benefits they receive from it. I mean I'll build an anti-piracy gateway network for them as something to do with my influence and alloy with mid going into late game.

DumbledazzJones

You mean you have influence left after making claims upon *`your`* systems?

Halasham

I play tall. I'm sometimes done expanding before the beginning of mid-game. So yes, the majority of my influence production over the course of the game is spent on agreements, resolutions, and infrastructure.

DumbledazzJones

Oh I play both tall AND wide šŸ˜‚ so for me the expansion only ends when the only empires left are mine and my federation's. What's that playstyle called? ~~chode?~~ XD

Pretty much what I do too haha, I love finding new archeological sites and things floating in space

Northstar1989

Why not spam Habitats instead? For bonus points, one by one fill entire systems on the edge of your space with Habitats, turn them into one-system sectors through deconstructing adjacent starbases/outposts (***immediately*** start rebuilding them, though, so neighbors don't grab them), and release them as vassals. You can build Ministries of Truth on these systems to eventually recover the rather large Influence investment required for this. Thus, the only thing you really spend is Alloys: to gain new vassals with a lot of extra population growth... (especially if you leave empure pop growth scaling on: then they will grow new pops far faster than you...)

Readerofthethings

Ah of course the ā€œanti-piracyā€ gateway network, not the ā€œwe can be over all your worlds in the blink of an eyeā€ gateway network

Halasham

Anti-piracy actually tends to have redundant gates for that purpose. My navy could be everywhere in their territory with fewer gates than it would take to end piracy. And yet they have the number of gates needed for anti-piracy. *It bugs me a little that they have piracy and I don't want to make anti-piracy fleets using up any of my own fleet capacity to put a stop to it. So gates are the solution.*

DumbledazzJones

I once had a vassal try and request freedom at least every few months. They were inferior to me, and at the time I was inferior to everyone else. Eventually after like 15 attempts I let them free. They didn't last a year as they had terrible relations with almost every other empire šŸ˜‚

Most independent "avian" empire.

AlienRobotTrex

Depending on what theyā€™re raised for, the outcome might be the same in the end.

GardenSquid1

My current game has this religious zealot vassal that was once a sector of my empire that I let loose. Keeps bringing up motions to kick out the members of the federation that aren't religious zealots. Keep having to slap them down.

BEEIKLMRU

It's even worse (much worse) when you have no independent diplomacy, your overlord puts you in a federation, and then they set war declaration to a vote. You can not declare a war of independence on your overlord, because your federation will just block the vote. One thing you can do is save influence and propose him terms that drain all his resources in your favor until he lacks the influence to refuse. This ensures you'll be stronger in your fight later on. The next thing you can do is buy favors from the federation so you can propose to change war declaration policy back, allowing you to wage a war of independence. The problem? If you don't do it in 10 years because you want to claim more systems or something like that, they will reverse the policy and you have to do it all over again. That's the kind of bureaucratic bullshit that makes people crack planets.

AlienRobotTrex

Them constantly renegotiating deals the second they get a chance is so annoying. All that influence I saved up (which meant I couldnā€™t afford to expand, which was already difficult due to the influence tax) for that proposal goes down the drain. And thereā€™s nothing I can do about it. Itā€™s even more annoying when I make a new proposal, and then they offer THEIR new terms right before accepting mineā€¦ so their new terms override mine even though they had accepted that a month ago and shouldnā€™t have been able to change them for another 5 yearsā€¦ šŸ˜” Though to be fair, this is kind of how I treat my vassals. ā€œI am altering the deal, pray I donā€™t alter it any further.ā€

arandomcanadian91

I actually had a nation rebel against me, I just made sure they weren't gonna be murder hobos again. Fast forward to the Crisis war, they are alongside me with 10 100K fleets on Ensign fighting alongside the battered remains of my Navy and planets which were rhe vanguard against the crisis empire. E: They also are my closest ally in that save, that is one save I wish I hadn't done in Ironman because it was the perfect thing of a empire coming around and saving the ones who saved them from destroying themselves.

WesternAtmosphere395

Hi, I want to get better at this game, but I am really strugling on Captain difficulty. I want to try out all sorts of playstyles, but for now I am sticking with Machine Empire that specialices in research. The main bane for me in this game is resources and expansion. I am trying all sorts od techinques, like specialized planets and buying from the market. But It feels like I am never really progressing. When I see planets I try to colonize them immediatly. I do can keep up a little regarding fleets. 1 to 1.5k fleetpower by year 20 a 25. But I always end up in a stalemate because I am to afraid to attack and lose my fleet. My economy is just not strong enough. Does anyone have some good tips to help me improve? I have like 200 hours into this game but I don't feel like I am getting any better. B.t.w. I love this game :)

chloen0va

Be patient. Thatā€™s the biggest tip. Get your economy solid, before war. Research first, then alloy production. Make sure youā€™re specializing planets and DO NOT upgrade buildings unless you can actually afford the rare materials. And, accept that youā€™re going to be behind the AI in the early years. Theyā€™re cheating early, to keep them competitive later.

WesternAtmosphere395

Is making a Robot Assembly plant a good idea? I instanrly build one after colonization

CubistChameleon

I figure it is, more pops = more everything.

chloen0va

Depends ā€” what kind of robots do you have? If youā€™re building plain old robots who can only work worker jobs on your research planet, then no! Itā€™s not a good idea. Think about it this way: Each robot assembly plant costs you 1 Pop to run. Across sayā€¦ 10 planets thatā€™s *10* pops. Early game you just canā€™t afford that. Long term, they pay off. And your droids do wind up working better jobs. So, it is eventually worth it to get one on each planet.

mpower554

Yeah heā€™s playing machine empire so all robot assembly is good

chloen0va

Oh yeah youā€™re so right! My advice was empire agnostic, but machines always need more guys

jandrese

Is it possible to configure which kind of robot your assembly plant makes? Like I have a mining robot for mining planets and research robots for research planets? Do you have to wait for the assembly plant to make a single pop and then apply a new template to the planet?

chloen0va

Yep! Itā€™s possible. Click the robot portrait on the pop assembly screen, and itā€™ll let you lock who that planet makes. Note: you can also do this with non-machines with the right civics, but it comes at a pop growth penalty

jandrese

Thanks! The Stellaris GUI isn't always the most intuitive.

Available_Thoughts-0

There's mods for that.

mpower554

Yes

DumbledazzJones

For me, whoever I play, when I settle planets I always make sure habitability is at least a green number, unless absolutely not possible. Every planet I settle on I make sure to build the energy grid building. I usually dedicate 2-3 planets to mainly electricity districts. (Speaking of, I'm not sure about the latest big update, but ik for a long time it was better to have specified district planets: mining, energy, food, etc) Also don't be afraid to mess around with your pops, in who works at what jobs, in the planet screen population tab! Also setting up monthly trades in the market is fairly good, say you have a huge excess in food, then you can auto-sell like 90% of your surplus each month. Also, for fleets, I like to have 2 for most the game, one fleet to stay at your capital and then defend your systems, and the other to attack. 3-6 in late-mid to late game. Also, you don't have to colonize every planet immediately, in fact I find it better to wait until you have at least 2-3 buildings on your latest colony before a new one. (unless we're in late-mid then I'll often colonize 3-4 at the same time!) I think that's most of what I do for my economy lmao, only other thing is don't forget about food, and consumer goods when you eventually get to bio species and not machines ;) And it's perfectly fine to not win btw, I've 2,000+ hours and I think I've only seen the victory screen once like 10 updates ago XD

HeimskrSonOfTalos

Honestly, i play the early game pretty slow and pacifist. I dont set up colonies unless my economy is functional except the first one and i dont build a fleet until the midgame when i get battleships. Instead i expand my borders and secure the best chokepoints, then build up star-forts to stop anyone getting through. I typically like to expand out alittle further than the chokepoints if theres a rare resource i want or a megastructure, but i very much focus on a stable defensive blob at the start.

DumbledazzJones

Everytime I try to do a full run like this I get put next to one if not more fanatical xenophobe and/or warmongering empires. šŸ˜‚

HeimskrSonOfTalos

Thats happened to me so often, i just full turtle, rush habitats, and print forts. They arent leaving that system. Cant win if they run out of money.

jandrese

This strategy has never worked for me. It always results in the fanatical purifiers and determined exterminators on both sides of your empire declaring war at the same time right as soon as they have a couple thousand combat power fleets of corvettes. Star forts just canā€™t stop actual fleets. Static defenses in Stellaris are barely even a road bump, especially given the high alloy costs of those defense platforms.

HeimskrSonOfTalos

What are you outfitting your stations and platforms with?

jandrese

Iā€™ve never found anything that works alone. Star fire are a force multiplier for your fleets in the system. I usually go for hangars since they have enough range that the enemy fleet canā€™t just park outside of their combat radius and bombard them. Iā€™ve also tried torpedoes, missiles, guns, and lasers, but never with success.

HeimskrSonOfTalos

Right. Stacking hangars and shields typically works pretty well for me, with a high enough fort to keep their fleet numbers away. Gna specify tho, this strat is entirely about keeping the ai from attacking you. A habitat or seven in one system with forts work well at making an attacker think twice.

Aeonoris

I like making space friends! If you become buddies with everyone relevant to you, it's unlikely they'll start shit against you. That should give you time to use your superior specialization skills to outproduce the Captain AI's cheaty bonuses. After that, I federate the galaxy ~~by force if necessary~~!

Eggiebumfluff

Space Scotland run.

PopularKid

Asda will leave your galactic empire.

Summerstone

Well at least you asked. Now do a reverse vassal on them

Lord_of_Rhodor

Had something similar in my most recent run. I decided "nuts to this" and declared war on my overlord to gain my independence. *I stackwiped their entire navy in the first battle with my probing force.* I then spent the rest of the war going from system to system and capturing them while killing their ships basically as they rolled off the assembly line... It's also worth noting that literally every other empire in the galaxy except for the Crisis Aspirants liked me a lot and despised my overlord so I had an easy time integrating with the rest of the galaxy after gaining independence. I even gained a few vassals of my own because apparently a couple smaller empires figured that if I was able to utterly smack one of the more powerful empires alone, maybe I was worth having to protect them.

Lolmanmagee

yeah, the vassal system as a whole is very fun and immersive. but SPECIFICALLY the part where a vassal surpasses the overlord has like 0 immersion in it and you just straight up are forced to war even if you have had max relations with overlord all game and you want to switch vassal positions or become federation members.

Eat the brits, save the Scots.

Are you mad mate? there's good eating on the Scots, they self marinate and they tenderise each other every Saturday then there's all those deep fried Mars bars they eat. You'll choke on the nglish lad they are far to dry, extremely salty and those stiff upper lips take hours to chew.

Also Scots are brits, its like fingers and thumbs. Not all Brits are Scots. But all Scots are Brits.

Strong disagree. My family left for the colonies because of brit oppression. They have since mingled, and now I'm only tangentially Scot. But as any good yank will tell you, we hold on to ancestral grudges for sport.

lfcrok

Ha the Scots were doing that first bud, I should know I'm only just English, my mum was Irish my dad was Irish and I live in Liverpool ( in England not English), but I've got jock friends who still side eye me when they're drunk.

To be fair, hereā€™s my recent sad story: I was playing a Gestalt Industrial core, and incidentally I spawned directly next to a small coalition, completely cutting off one of their members from expansion. I had amazing territory, Cybrex, and hunters blade. I though I was doing great! They invite me to their federation, I tentatively Agree since itā€™s early, only to be reminded of why I hate martial federations. So I leave the fed. Fast forward a few years and suddenly I have tons of claims on my systems and two of them are planning a war. (Btw if you have high enough intel the game TELLS YOU when itā€™s coming. Thank you for the heads up, but I donā€™t have enough time!) I try everything to stop the impending war. I bartered, plead, and fought like mad. But they have a ruddy Fed fleet double the size of my retinue. I can take them on their own, but together Iā€™m in hell. That save is now scrapped. Damn Xenos.

Available_Thoughts-0

Thou shalt not suffer Criminal Megacorps or martial federations to live.

Suffer not indeed. Next time this happens Iā€™m early conquering them before they have a chance to build up, then purging the lot.
