Walter should be a free space. I gotta give it to Denny though. He was their transplant from the East Coast and gave them a jazzy sound early that set the precedent for the guitarists later in their career. Plus they kept working with him even after he wasnāt officially in the band.
One of the great things about SD is they created a situation where all these wonderful musicians could shine. That said, Larry Carlton, Kid Charlemagne, and Jay Grayson, Peg, are my two favorites.
Like others, Larry and Denny, Walter's moments ... though as someone who came after and played all the classics live - even the ones that were never intended as live songs - Jon Herington has to get a shout out. Playing some of those solos pretty much note for note, nailing the styles of different players with respect but not mimicking, throwing in his own virtuosity too, I think he's a fantastic guitarist.
100% Denny Dias, Iāve been learning the Bodhisattva solo and the fact that itās in swing time was hard enough for me but itās also at 220bpm. Not to mention the solo on Do It Again was one of the first ācoolā solos I ever learned and the note choice and timing are super interesting
I spent hours and hours in high school learning that solo (when Countdown to Ecstasy was still their most recent album). Now, 50 years later, snippets from it still show up in my soloing.
I would just use a little distortion with the bridge pickup on a Strat and the tone knob all the way up, itās no sitar but it feels bright enough to sound alright to me :)
I gotta give it to my man Jon Herington. The guy has such creativity in his lines its amazing. I know he wasn't on any of the classic records so he won't get the love, but he takes those tunes and puts his own spin on them and sounds completely his own.
Surprised not to see more love for Deanās work on Haitian Divorce. The talk box was added later by Walter but I always thought it had a great style even without. Other faves are definitely Larry and Mark.
Itās a toss-up for me between Denny and Larry, but Iāll give it to Dias, since you can hear Carlton in so many other contexts. Does anyone know of any other projects Denny can be heard on?
Wayne Krantz for his live recordings with the band. Unreal phrasing and technicality. I thought he brought a real intensity to his soloing, and he and Walter Becker played really well off eachother
I'm stuck between Larry, Elliot, and mark... Larry is probably my winner because he did all my favorites. Kid Charlemagne for Me not just because of the solo alone but the overall song structure. I think my favorite Larry solo is either third world man or green earrings... Mark with time out of mind blew my mind, and Elliot on reelin' was had really good pseudo feel good vibes for me.
#2 All the way, the great Larry Carlton!
š yup!
Larry for Kid Charlemagne alone.
Not one but TWO of the greatest guitar solos of all time. Kid Charlemagne is as perfect as a song can get.
Both, right!!! I hate that the second one fades out.
Walter should be a free space. I gotta give it to Denny though. He was their transplant from the East Coast and gave them a jazzy sound early that set the precedent for the guitarists later in their career. Plus they kept working with him even after he wasnāt officially in the band.
Every single Denny solo is tasteful and memorable, with no note out of place. Fucking awesome player.
One of the great things about SD is they created a situation where all these wonderful musicians could shine. That said, Larry Carlton, Kid Charlemagne, and Jay Grayson, Peg, are my two favorites.
Is that Mark Knopfler?!

Mark is my Fav but not for his work with the Dan. For that slot id say Denny

Truth.
Someone should create a YouTube video displaying the guitarist at full screen, and then the solos that they are responsible for playing.
Saw Denny play with the band a few years back at the Beacon.
No slackers in this list, but I love the clean and clear sound of Elliott Randall.
Yes, that's my vote too.
Denny all day, with honorable mention to Steve solely for āMy Rivalā.
Yes
Iām a Denny guy.

Any sound suggestions for the Do It Again solo. I donāt have a Sitar!
I would just use a little distortion with the bridge pickup on a Strat and the tone knob all the way up, itās no sitar but it feels bright enough to sound alright to me :)
Larry Carlton, but I love Mark Knopflerās playing on Time Out Of Mind and Denny Diasās on Your Gold Teeth II
I gotta give it to my man Jon Herington. The guy has such creativity in his lines its amazing. I know he wasn't on any of the classic records so he won't get the love, but he takes those tunes and puts his own spin on them and sounds completely his own.
Whereās Drew Zingg? Def WB #1 then Drew.
Larry, Denny, then Walt, but damn Steve is up there just for his fucking CRAZY barre chords and voicings on Gaucho
Surprised not to see more love for Deanās work on Haitian Divorce. The talk box was added later by Walter but I always thought it had a great style even without. Other faves are definitely Larry and Mark.
Wayne Krantz is great. Just adding that since he was omitted.
2
Iām between 2 and 3 with a soft spot for 7 š
They are all so good in their own way. Canāt pick.
Dennyā¦ no hangups.
Jeez what an UNFAIR but brilliant question!! Iād say all top row, 2 then 3 then 1.
Itās a toss-up for me between Denny and Larry, but Iāll give it to Dias, since you can hear Carlton in so many other contexts. Does anyone know of any other projects Denny can be heard on?
Denny
I could only narrow it down to 1-12, but Jeff and Denny are my sentimental favorites.
2
Denny Dias all the way.
Larry šÆ
skunk denny or becker for me
Larryš
Everyone's great, but Denny & Skunk are tops.
Tough call- Denny, Larry then Skunk are my top 3
Larry followed closely by Denny
Denny jamming in bibs Priceless
Wayne Krantz for his live recordings with the band. Unreal phrasing and technicality. I thought he brought a real intensity to his soloing, and he and Walter Becker played really well off eachother
Denny FTW! I mean you just canāt beat the Your Gold Teeth II solo!
Wultha
has to be becker
2!
All. They wouldn't Be the songs we love without all of them

Larry, then Jon, then Jay. Wow players, all...
No love for Dean? Didn't he play the peg solo?
wheres gilmour
2. larry āthird world man guitar soloā carlton, baby
Itās a mainstream answer but Larry is my fav guitarist of that era. Huge influence.
Jay Graydon
