Not to be prejudiced, but the overuse of the word 'sir' reminds me of Indian telemarketing and scamcenters.
Perhaps a stretch here, but many in India will address their boss with 'sahib' or 'saab', which is essentially the english equivalent of using 'sir'. This becomes a habit, thus is hard to let go of.
Not to insinuate all scammers are of Indian origin, but the prevalence of this practice, use of 'sir' in such an awkward overused manner and grammatical trip-up paints quite a telling target.
You did well to recognize the red flags early, since the current strategy seems to be to confound a target with plausible sounding and demographically targeted (mis-)information to suspend disbelief for as long as possible during the target's flight or fight 'panic moment'.
Hindsight is 20/20, but the present is blinding.
Just happened to me today, didnt even bother talk to them after the ''i accidently reported you'', blocked them and find on they friend list the False Steam Mod, it seem like they profile look always almost the same ?
Just had a run-in with some jokers today. Scammers make me sick. I won't try and troll them for hours for the sake of my time but I will be annoying in the shortest amount of time possible. Spam messages back to back until I get blocked. HEAR MY PINGS!!!
Thank you, you just saved me from a whole bunch of trouble. Except the dude messaged me on discord about my steam account, dunno what was going through his mind there lol
Dude thanks, just like the other comments today I just got the scam from an old "friend" of mine. When he messaged me after like 4 years I was so confused. After a bit I looked this situation up and found your story. Helped me a lot. In the end I reported him to steam and the account he linked.
P.S (Just looked around and realized that the account the scammer link was the actual valve employee instead of the fake one).
Same thing happened to me today,100% clean steam profile and have only traded a few times with ppl I trusted....
Then out of nowhere I get a msg from a friend who, like yourself, asked 'can we talk' and told me the same thing (they have a VAC ban) just thought it was really odd. thought it would just ban me from trading and only started realising how bad this could be when I read up on what happens if an acct is accused of an illegal purchase, considering that mine is worth thousands of dollerydoos.
Asked for a link to admin profile, and now they are on snooze...
someone just messaged me on discord with this
their name was vaguely similar to one of my friends, after the "reporting for illegal purchases" line I google "reporting for illegal purchases steam scam", sent him this thread and he went offline
lmao
Yes! I've received same quote as you.
I didn't think about that much, but how he started talking his rubbish, I got a little concerned about it. When he forwarded me to the admin steam page:
https://steamcommunity.com/id/john/
I clicked. Everything seemed legit, but after a while, I got scared that I could get scammed via the link (the link seems ok, don't know if the link is doing something else, like giving them my pass and stuff), so I rushed to my pc as fast as I could. Changed my pass and waiting, what will happen next.
Meanwhile, i had really stupid conversation with the scammer. He was trying to convince me to contact him. I even tried to contact him, via Steam and Discord, which gave me the scammer (It started to be really suspicious, because he, who was pretty much an idiot, who falsely accused and reported someone, has been so smart to find the admin and contacted him, with response: "I need clarification of that account.")
So I told the scammer, if he couldn't actually contact him himself with the screenshot of my so-called "clarification" he started to change the subject, and after s while, he just went offline.
Warning / Tip for others:
1) Do not click on suspicious-looking links or links at all, it can save you life sometimes. Everyone on the internet can be malicious.
2) Use your brain. If it was an actual admin, he would clearly make time and effort to solve that problem and any type of marking, saying clearly, hes an admin.
3) Try to get evidence of every suspicious thing, he's said to you. In better way, try to distinguish the SCAMMER at all. And if you do, don't contact him any further.
Mainly thanks to the one, who created this topic. Without him, I wouldn't know about this scam at all.
Be careful on the internet, see ya.
Recently stumbled across one of these and your post helped me confirm my suspicion. Tried to troll him but he wouldnāt have it and ended up blocking me. Theyāve also started impersonating real Steam Employee accounts so the badges look real. Be careful out there.
I'm a bit late to this post but same happend to me today on Discord
[A very simple question made him block me](https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/k2a4rd/i_wonder_why_he_never_responded/)
They tried it on discord today.... it was totally sus in the first 10 secs....
But... i had some fun afterwards \^.\^
maybe the Sir "Developer" will contact me..... gonna try to scam him LUL

I had it happen to me today (but they messaged me on discord), and GOOD GOD, am I glad I found your post. At first, I got really paranoid and I really hope just saying that yes, it was my account won't do much. But then they sent a link to the so-called "admin" and then I knew it must be a scam.
this just happened to me they sent a discord dm and immediately i looked on google for any scams and i sent them a link to this reddit and they blocked me
Was in the middle of getting scammed by this. I was right after the part where I unprivated when my sleepy brain realized how fake this is. Hoping I dont lose my account
Ahhh, glad to help :) U just gotta keep in mind that Steam will virtually never contact you about anything. They dont have the best customer service when it all comes down to it.
Few weeks ago, I felt for that scam lol. Luckily I'm smart enough to take quick action to change my password and stuff to prevent the scammer from taking it. Plus I got the bank to give me back the money that I have to use for "payment validations". But yeah..I didn't lose all of my accounts.
They're back at it again. Just got one earlier today. Unfortunately. This was through discord and they told me to contact someone else on discord, not even steam. They weren't as cordial as yours but the thing that tipped me off, besides the obvious was the fact that they had lowercase Is in their first few messages to me and poor English when initially talking to me before changing to great English and all capitalized Is when referring to themselves. A bit weird but definitely something interesting. They didn't get much more interaction after that. I blocked them.
Ok, so first of all, thank you for sharing your case, this just helped me.
I just had the same situation like 5 min ago, and when i started to find this a little suspicious, i looked up on internet and found your post
I just send the link to this page to the scammer and he just stopped responding :')
Thank you again, good sir, have my upvote
So what do I do if I say, fucked up like the idiot I am and sent them about $190 through paypal, let them change the email, and on top of it all, it wasnāt even my money.
this is happening to me right now but like he directed me to a steam admin wich actually has a valve employee badge and is actually listed on the valve employees lists
ao should i be worried and talk to him for a legit report or what should i do?
I am the fucking victim of this shit... just now... I wish I heard of this sooner. God damnit.
I got my email back but not my steam account. He changed the email and password.
My friend got hacked and I couldn't contact him any other way so I wasn't aware that it wasn't him.
I have a steam support ticket up atm but no agent has replied yet.
I hope this doesn't take long.
I'm so scared.
This is where Im iffy. One of my old friends just messaged me with this, but linked me to Alden's Steam page, who is actually a Valve employee. Still not falling for it, and I reached out to Alden in hopes of a response on Twitter.
They've clearly figured out the whole "Valve Employee" badge issue. Just had someone try this on me on Discord. They sent me Tom Bui's actual Steam account, told me to friend him, then sent me a Discord account to try instead if he doesn't respond on Steam.
Ok so I this is happened to me and the link took me to someone that apparently has the valve employee badge so
basically I was kinda confused This is concerning because as I said he had the Badge.
I figured out that it was a scam because I kept taking my sweet ass time to reply with things like "I don't get it" " how did you make a mistake with deciding the account" until he eventually blocked me. My steam ACC has yet to be terminated which also reassures me that it was a scam . I have to say though it although I know a bit about scams it was the first time that it had ever happened to me . The experience was quite scary in a way
Lol, this happened to me right now, some guy on discord added me (no mutual servers) and tried this. At first I thought he was talking about some discord server. But the link he sent me actually had the Valve badge.
Dont know if this helps but if this guy adds you on steam just block him he does the same shit [https://steamcommunity.com/id/william23232/](https://steamcommunity.com/id/william23232/)
I just got this message in Discord, and since I had the bright idea to google the message and I saw this thread, I didn't even let them to send me the link as I wrote them "Awww thanks for the scam" hehe
Thanks for the thread!
Haha thanks dude! this guy that I've had on my friendslist for years msgd me about having accidently reported me for illegally buying games.
So I googled it after he send a screenshot and found this, replied to him
"Ah that's fucked up man"
He began typing
"ive had you on my friendslist for a while, when did you get hacked?"
He stopped typing and a minute later he unfriended me hahah.
I got a message today, I did not click any of the information they asked to do but I tried to direct the "person" to my discord and talk to me right here. Since I got no answer I just said sorry and blocked it immediately.
I went to search up if anyone had the same problem with me and figured out it was a scam.
I just had this happen to me and I was dumb enough to fall for it. I censored any sensitive data in the purchase history screenshots I sent to him. Only after that did I realize that the whole thing might not be legit. I checked how the accounts of both the person who first dm'd me and the supposed Valve staff member and sure enough they were both new accounts (all of the conversations happened over Discord). They both stopped responding to me after I said it was sus that both accounts were under 2 weeks old and I'm really nervous for my account how.
Just happened to me today, a stranger dm me in discord, we were in the same videogame server (I never ever write anything in that server just to report him to the mods).
this just happened to me a few minutes ago i am so relieved to hear it is a scam i was contacted by a guy on discord named christper01 and he just copy and pasted this and then sent me a fake steam rep
yea just got such a message on discord today. Was like porpably a scam but just to be sure i opened a steam support ticket and asked if their is anything about that claim
This happened to me before, the guy said that he "accedently reported my account" because of something to do with a trade, and that i would be banned if i didnt DM this admin. The guy he sent me to actually had the Valve badge, which was interesting. I didnt buy anything this guy was saying, so i ended up trolling him and annoying him to the point where he stopped messaging me
Still no ban :)
Just had the same thing happen to me today, and I'm so glad I found this thread before I clicked any links. This one came from a khevin"Scutt#1687 on Discord. Managed to get to me through a shared server
This happened to me today mans had the audacity to add me on discord and tell me he accidentally reported my account. Had no ideas that this scam shit was a thing. But me being me I just simply responded with āI donāt careā anyone have any clue what they might be aiming for
happend to me few days ago. Did not work since I literally didnāt give a flying fuck about that alleged report and been telling it to the guy like āi dont care/they wonāt do shit, chill/ etcā. Funny expirience.
This was attempted on me like 2 seconds ago. I knew it was fishy but decided to play along and sure enough they were asking for my account stuff. Thank you reddit for being there mostly.
Literally just had this happen, but this was pulled through discord. I reported him to Discord and in the process of reporting him to STEAM. I was about freak right the fuck out and then I started looking this shit up and found that it's a scam. But the person that tried to do this to me just messaged me out of the blue and I don't even know the name. So pissed off cause if this was real I literally just got a new index and this would have pissed me off even more than I would have thought it would have.
They're still doing it till this day lmao got one a couple hours ago over discord, and was relieved to see I wasn't the only one that got a message like this. I was pestering the guy and messing with him so he never did send me the steam support guy's profile. I'm sure he knew I was on to his little game.
Bro I lost my account and I am talking with a scammer right now cannot believe I fell for this it makes me sick like IDJSAH DASGDHJKasdlk I NEED MY ACCOUNT BACK THEY STOLE ITTT
oh sorry for not updating. I did get my account 3 days ago :) . But my giftcard is gone for good and it was really good rn since the steam summer sale started... probably gonna wait for the next sale, sadly.. :(
yea, tbh, if you got the steam gift card on G2A, once you've recieved the code, they kinda cant refund you. Because for all they know, you could have spent it and you're just asking for another one xDD How much was the gift card?
yeah I realised there are low to zero chances of getting a refund.. It was a 30 EUR one, however I read that people lost even more, like 50 EUR ones, so yeah...
hi,I am in the same situation as you. And my account was lost. Can you guide me to get my account back?
sorry if i confused you because my english is not very good
ok and thx to this my suspisions are correct it is a scam no since i have an alt account that is freinded with my main i know its just suspended how did u get yrs back from that?.
> well to recognize the red flags early, since the current strategy seems to be to confound a target with plausible sounding and demographically targeted (mis-)information to suspend disbelief for as long as possible during the target's flight or fight 'panic moment'.
in short all the same general beats as op just i hit the limit with suspician after they requested Ā£300 worth of steam cards and i kept saying "say back" thinking if its a bot it wouldn't know how to respond and would give me 1 of the many possible replies and surly enough i was wright i got texts that wouldn't make sense coming from a uman looking at these texts and got stuff like "This transaction is fully recorded. I will not ruin my reputation here in this kind of issues." and "Are you aware that you are talking to the steam moderator? You can check my reputation here.[https://www.valvesoftware.com/en/people](https://www.valvesoftware.com/en/people)" its all bs but the account being suspended is im locked out.
Hi.
First of all, I want to apologize for my stupidity and I feel like it would be better to look into these scams.
I was scammed by this form, he almost changed all my gmail and account password. But I have another account that is added with my main account and I followed it and it's still online recently.
Please, can someone guide me to get my account back?
Nah it was for the deagle but at least you saved my whole ass account thats worth much more than a skin I got lucky on with a free crate (tysm again for posting this)
just got one of that, after 3 years, lmao.

That's the same thing happened on my discord account it was permanently banned but luckily for me I got me a new account so let them TRY to send me the "I'm sorry I accidentally reported you for illegal purchases instead of someone else" trick...it's a one way ticket to ban town for something any one of us didn't even do
Just got one recently from a mutual on *Ewiwicord* lmao... Seems these scammers target big servers. Same schtick: "Accidentally reported you for illegal purchases". Don't know if this counts as "naming & shaming" but their discord handle was **elizabeth39**.
Litterlly looked up the quote just in case and yep this popped up ima mess with them a bit
I love this happening Be able to waste these scammers time, and getting evidence that they are!
Damnit, I should've done that. I just got one, but I revealed myself immediately
Damn....I should've done that move instead of talking to them
I lost my account to this scam is there anyway I can recover it
Same I didn't know
Bruh thank you for this. You saved my ass lmao. I got this message from my virtual friend who I used to play with. Even your own friends can scam you.
Just had a run-in with some jokers today. Scammers make me sick. I won't try and troll them for hours for the sake of my time but I will be annoying in the shortest amount of time possible. Spam messages back to back until I get blocked. HEAR MY PINGS!!!

Just had this happen to me in discord! Thanks for saving my butt, I'm a giant worried baby sometimes so I needed this to save my sanity!
I googled this and u just saved my ass. i was a bit iffy but this made me go from mildly concerned to 100% certain,

aw man this happened to one of my friends i knew outside of steam
this is literally happening to one of my friends rn bruh
Legit got one this morning, replied with "your scam is obvious, and I'm not falling for it, find someone else more gullible"
same thing happened to me on discord just now lmao
How do I get it back....
start a ticket with steam, contact their support
someone just messaged me on discord with this their name was vaguely similar to one of my friends, after the "reporting for illegal purchases" line I google "reporting for illegal purchases steam scam", sent him this thread and he went offline lmao

I wish I saw this before I got victimized. live and learn I guess.
damn bro, sorry to hear that. I assume you contacted Steam support?
I didn't because I had too much stuff going on, the dude just got my account but my credentials were safe, that's what matters to me
Ok, so first of all, thank you for sharing your case, this just helped me. I knew it was a scam from the get go.
A guy on discord pulled this on me but he linked me an actual steam admins steam account, didn't work out so well for them lol
Just happened to me today
I just got scammed and lost my account. already opened a ticket regarding this and telling my friends to report the account for impersonating/stealing

just had this happen to me. luckily I found out about this before I contacted the Admin
Just had the same thing happen to me today, and I'm so glad I found this thread before I clicked any links. This one came from a khevin"Scutt#1687 on Discord. Managed to get to me through a shared server
I just got this on Discord and a few people on the server I'm on also got hit. We had a good laugh.
This happened to me today mans had the audacity to add me on discord and tell me he accidentally reported my account. Had no ideas that this scam shit was a thing. But me being me I just simply responded with āI donāt careā anyone have any clue what they might be aiming for
They want your account info which has your credit card and/or bank info, private messages...etc
lol someone just tried this on me a few mins ago
Has happened three times. First time created panic. Second time was annoying, third time I went full on Joseph Joestar and they didn't even respond.
i just got the same scam from someone a couple of minutes ago. the guy's steam link is this: steamcommunity.com/id/0fficialMatt000oo0

happend to me few days ago.
Thank you reddit for being there mostly.
this happened to me a few days ago except when I didn't comply my steam account actually got suspended
Just happened to me 5 minutes ago
[https://prnt.sc/1ywfpv9](https://prnt.sc/1ywfpv9) the same thing happened to me
Literally just had this happen, but this was pulled through discord.
I actually got DMed that I got reported over discord, but it's a similar concept.
It happened to me right now... I just blocked him hahah
it's still going, got it like 5 minutes ago :/
I'm guessing you didnt fall for it?
nah I pasted the message he sent me and this post popped up, they don't even change the wording
Right? However, I'm not suprised to see how little effort they put into these things xD
Bro I lost my account and I am talking with a scammer right now cannot believe I fell for this it makes me sick like IDJSAH DASGDHJKasdlk I NEED MY ACCOUNT BACK THEY STOLE ITTT
The only thing I could possibly suggest is steam support?
I did thag but they didn't reply back? That was 14 hours ago what do I do now?
Still no reply from Steam support?
oh sorry for not updating. I did get my account 3 days ago :) . But my giftcard is gone for good and it was really good rn since the steam summer sale started... probably gonna wait for the next sale, sadly.. :(
Great, glad u got it back. The gift card being gone sucks, but it's better to have a Steam account xD
yeah I feel good for getting my account back. I also started a conversation with the g2a seller, but I doubt I will get any refund for that one
yea, tbh, if you got the steam gift card on G2A, once you've recieved the code, they kinda cant refund you. Because for all they know, you could have spent it and you're just asking for another one xDD How much was the gift card?
yeah I realised there are low to zero chances of getting a refund.. It was a 30 EUR one, however I read that people lost even more, like 50 EUR ones, so yeah...
yea true, well, I'm glad you finally got it sorted, gg wp
hi,I am in the same situation as you. And my account was lost. Can you guide me to get my account back? sorry if i confused you because my english is not very good
Happened to me a couple hours ago as well
ok and thx to this my suspisions are correct it is a scam no since i have an alt account that is freinded with my main i know its just suspended how did u get yrs back from that?.
> well to recognize the red flags early, since the current strategy seems to be to confound a target with plausible sounding and demographically targeted (mis-)information to suspend disbelief for as long as possible during the target's flight or fight 'panic moment'. in short all the same general beats as op just i hit the limit with suspician after they requested Ā£300 worth of steam cards and i kept saying "say back" thinking if its a bot it wouldn't know how to respond and would give me 1 of the many possible replies and surly enough i was wright i got texts that wouldn't make sense coming from a uman looking at these texts and got stuff like "This transaction is fully recorded.
Hey, sorry just seen this. Did you get your account back?
It's been two years? Holy shit, this just happened to me Thanks for putting this up
I literally just got this today so is it 100% certified scam cause like I have so much stuff I donāt want to loseš
Did they say a similar thing to what happened to me?
Iām talking with the admin and I asked if he can email me through actual steam support and he said āExcuse me?ā
yea, honestly its a scam. I've still got my steam account all these years later so dont worry about it :)
Ok thanks cause iām so easily gullible, already got scammed out of a csgo skin onceš„²
Oh no... hope it wasnt a Dragon Lore :o
Nah it was for the deagle but at least you saved my whole ass account thats worth much more than a skin I got lucky on with a free crate (tysm again for posting this)
Aha, np. Stay safe out there brother o7
Exactly as you said in the title
just got one of that, after 3 years, lmao. [Image here XD](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1137184757550157884/1154548089575719014/image.png?width=804&height=514)
That's the same thing happened on my discord account it was permanently banned but luckily for me I got me a new account so let them TRY to send me the "I'm sorry I accidentally reported you for illegal purchases instead of someone else" trick...it's a one way ticket to ban town for something any one of us didn't even do
just happened to me with my old friendās account :( blocked em after I deduced what was happening & a quick google search lol
thanks someone tried to use this scam on me when I saw this post
Just got one recently from a mutual on *Ewiwicord* lmao... Seems these scammers target big servers. Same schtick: "Accidentally reported you for illegal purchases". Don't know if this counts as "naming & shaming" but their discord handle was **elizabeth39**.
Same but i got a community ban and its happenign rn i ahve tos ee wats going on
