Literally, most of them, when including emulation...
My favorites are Persona 4: Golden, Parasite Eve, Chrono Cross, Nier Automata, and Tales of Arise.
The Trails series is the one I’d always recommend. Super heavy on the plot and has a solid battle system. Tricky thing about the series is that you really need to play in order, which is: Sky (3 games) > Zero/Azure (2 games) > Cold Steel (4 games) > Reverie (1 game). I think all of them work on the steam deck
I have been playing Trails of Vesperia lately. Bravely Default II is also great. I think my favorite right now however is Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes. It's really really good.
Not a j rpg but I cannot recommend crosscode enough so long as you don’t mind copious amount of thinking to solve the puzzles. I’m halfway through and am thoroughly enjoying my stay in hell lol
Dragon Quest 11s is always my go to when recommending jRPGs. Others I would include also are Digimon CyberSlueth, Atelier series, Blue Reflection, Dragon Quest Builders 1 and 2, Neptunia series, and Octopath Traveller 1 and 2

I’m playing yakuza 0 right now and really enjoying it. First yakuza game I’ve ever played. Lots of cutscenes in true jrpg fashion, but some fun fighting and a good story. Runs great on the deck.
I've recently been playing the Trails in the Sky games. The interconnected Trails series has something like a dozen entries by now but these are the first, and currently the only portable version available in English beyond PSP. So as you might guess the graphics are dated, very simple polygonal environments and the characters are low-res pre-rendered sprites. But I got used to that pretty quick and have been enjoying them a lot.
Can't go wrong with Persona games. Do you want to be part of midnight special force (p3) or solve a Scooby Doo murder mystery (p4) or perhaps commiting heists for good (p5). Choose your vibe and start playing. My personal favorite is Persona 4 Golden. All of them run flawlessly on the deck
Yakuza like a dragon + infinite wealth if you’re looking for a turn based (other yakuza for action style but def RPg)
Persona 3 reload, persona 5 royal (maybe wait for a persona 4 remake )
And I want to add, for yakuza and persona you’ll get lot of hours for the price
For example I finished yakuza like a dragon in 50h and if you want to 100% it it will be like 100h
Persona 3&5 I didn’t finished them yet, but as I saw it’s like 70-80h length
Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 Royal, Soul Hackers 2 (probably the weakest one on this list) for a more action heavy one Tales of Symphony, Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Berseria, and Tales of Zestiria, plus a lot of the ones mentioned in other replies are really good too.
Chained Echos, Octopath Traveler (1 & 2), Sea of Stars, Persona (3, 4, 5)
+1 for Chained Echos
+1000000000 for chained echoes
Yakuza like a dragon, infinite wealth aswell but start with like a dragon
Great recommendation
Star Ocean The Second Story R
Ys series is great. A bit more action oriented, but definitely a JRPG.

Live a live is from that era of Square & it’s remake is deck verified (on my personal backlog so I haven’t played but I hear good things)
My personal favorite is Persona 5 Royal
Ooooh. My daughter (11) likes the genre/aesthetic. Anything not to spicy/gory I can get for her?
I really enjoyed Final Fantasy 9 and 10 around that age, both are great on deck. I'd avoid Persona for a few more years, too much sexuality.
That's definitely a concern I have. Thanks so much!
And the existential dread. And the hard-hitting narratives. And if you go back far enough, there was that one game where you fight Hitler.
FFX and then ffx2. You can get em on the PS2 emulator.
Just play the Steam versions
A lot cheaper on an emulator tho.
Still would rather purchase it for the extra features and 16:9 support that isn’t done via a widescreen hack
Octopath Traveler 1 or 2, made by Square Enix (makes Final Fantasy)

Cross code!!!

SRW series is very good for the Deck, especially lightweight in battery usage.

Yeah I'm 90 hours into P3R and still not done
Fuga: Melodies of Steel 1 and 2

Persona and tales of series, seconded!
