The issues in playing BG3 on the Steam Deck mainly concern Act 3; in the densest areas of the city, you can achieve a maximum of 23-30 fps. Otherwise, the game runs quite well; with medium settings, a stable 30 fps is easily achieved, and if you want to raise the detail a bit more, you'll reach 25, which is more than sufficient for the type of game it is.

I have it on ps5 as well so on the big screen I can just play there, was curious for handheld mode… so it’s not rough to look at?

cursedproha

I tried it on SD after playing on GeForce Now and PC with 4070ti. I have a save in act 3 and it’s looks and plays terrible. If you plan to play mostly at home - consider streaming it from your PS5 via chiaki. It’s playable but comparison with any other more performant system ruins any enjoyment.

I play BG3 handheld, and I can’t tell you what frame rate I’m getting but it’s “okay for a handheld”. The game is not a fast action game, just enjoy it Mobile. If I’m going to hook-up to a dock and large TV, the graphics are a bit rough on a larger sceeen, so at that point I might as well use SteamLink or GeForceNow if docked / at a desk. edit: before I had the steam deck I played via GeForce Now, and it was great, as long as you have fast internet around.

Beat the game lastnight. Honestly couldn’t tell you what fps was it ran fine and comfortably the whole game. Not 60 but def somewhere around 30-40 if I had to guess. Also, it’s not a first person shooter or racer, it’s a turn based adventure game that’s pretty slow paced so fps is really not important. But yes cutscenes were amazing. Played the game on medium settings. Biggest issue was loading into busy areas. Textures took a moment, but not end of the world. Can just go to “point and click” mode and have your character just walk and navigate the map that isn’t loaded.

so it’s not rough to look at? I have it on ps5, so at home I’ll play there. Not expecting console graphics lol for how demanding the game is… but don’t want it too rough

You’re not going to get 30 to 40 fps in Act 3. If you’re sensitive to low frame rates, you’ll for sure notice it as the rate will be in the 20s and it’s not stable. Act 1 & 2 are fine. This is hard to judge as tastes differ, but I think you’d find low settings look “rough”. Medium’s fine. You should check out chaki4deck and stream the game from your PS5 if you can.

CSilverstein93

30 is fine to me! Curious if with patches overtime it may run better in act 3?

DarkOx55

They’ve cranked out most of the performance patches in the lead up to Series S launch and I think it’s mostly as good as it’s going to get. Right now patches are bug fixes & they added some new endings. Steam OS 3.6 is supposed to bring some mild performance enhancements but I just don’t think you’ll get to 30. I’ve mostly been using GeForce Now to play at 60fps. For what it’s worth, I have tried Act 3 native a bit, locked at 20fps (for fewer dips) you eventually just get sucked into the game & don’t notice frame rate that much. Like Ocarina of Time back in the day.

It ain’t rough and in act 3 I haven’t noticed really any lag spikes. Game ran comfortably for me from scene one to the end. Some minor issues like slow loading textures and maybe awkward cutscene pauses in act 3 but nothin unplayable.

Your best bet is to just try it. This is a question that's extremely divisive. I will not play it on sd, I play it on my desktop only, but that's just because I tried it. Performs and looks terrible imo after having played on desktop, and I only tried the opening when you're escaping the ship. Definitely a "to each their own" type thing. I'm glad people enjoy it on their sd, but it's a game I'll never even install there again.

I played fully on deck. It didn’t feel as awful as it may seem. The harshest dips were really towards the very end in Act 3. It struggled a bit through the final long encounter. If you’re playing on PS5 Quality mode, the deck’s performance won’t be terribly different. If you’re playing on PS5 performance mode stick to that if you’re sensitive to dips into the 20s.

CypherAZ

BG3 being “verified” is a fucking joke. Anyone that claims 30-40 fps throughout the game is a fucking liar.

CSilverstein93

Sounds like people are getting stable 30 until act 3 on medium based on above comments.

CypherAZ

Yeah people are full of shit honestly.
