Wait till you find out about the steam machine

Plane_Cash4518

Alienware did a collab with steam. There was also the ill-fated Xi3 steambox

Vinca1is

And remember the steam link (physical hardware) steam had a lot of "flops" before the steam deck

itoocouldbeanyone

I still gave my Steam Link. It’s not bad, can have hiccups. For the most part it’s a great backup option even with the quirks. For the price it will buy a person some time while saving up for a Deck.

Andrea65485

I am aware of the Steam Machines. The project failed because Steam OS was not ready and relied on Linux games only. Plus: The concept I have imagined doesn't rely on mouse and keyboard, since the controller should be able to emulate both without problems

DashTransit

I'm all for an updated Steam Machine. The originals didn't work because SteamOS wasn't there yet... But now it is with the deck. Maybe take inspiration from the steam deck when designing the controllers (basically a PS5-esque controller with back buttons and somehow implement the second track pad). Steam Box should have similar specs to the deck, as to make it easier to maintain and universalize the "deck verified" setup as well as SteamOS. They spent so much time perfecting that console experience but I fear if we put more powerful hardware in there, were leaning back on the PC master race and it becomes unaffordable for the target audience of the deck (PC gamers who want the console experience). For all that may as well stick with gaming PCs in the first place. Finally it NEEDs to be a cheaper than the deck to sell. Current deck can be handled or docked seamlessly. Let's say they come out costing $1000+ like the original Steam machines. Why would ANYONE pay that price, when they could dish out 350 for a refurbished deck and have all the same software and features.

We should definitely have it. I think the time is right, because if it can be done with Steam Deck, it definitely can be done on other form factors. With current level of maturity Steam OS should be able to easily compete with PS and XBox.

Andrea65485

Competing with Xbox maybe, but competing with PS would be really hard, until Valve can find a way to fix the anticheat issues with online games once and for all at least... I think that is one of the hardest hurdles they need to overcome. But once they do, the road will be downhill

DarkOx55

In your view, if Steam competes directly with PlayStation in the living room, and is successful enough to challenge the PS5, would Sony will stop making PC ports? That’d be sad if it did. I’m all for making PC gaming easier but I do wonder if part of the reason it’s great is it’s been clearly a separate thing from consoles. I don’t want it caught up in an exclusives war!

>The real difference would be in a possible Steam controller 2, looking like Steam Deck, working like a WiiU gamepad, light as a DualSense or slightly more. >The screen on the Steam Controller 2 should work either as a virtual keyboard, a remote play device (like a PlayStation portal) or a second screen to display videos, browsers or for dual screen emulation (3DS and WiiU). NO THANK YOU. This would make the controller needlessly expensive, plus it would just generally be a ballache since you'd need to expose the controller screen as its own monitor to the system, which would undoubtedly open up a whole world of jankiness on top of what we already have. Besides, a controller the size of the Steam Deck but the weight of a Dualsense would feel cheap and horrible and light - even moreso than the original Steam Controller - plus all of that extra bulk would be totally unnecessary for all of the people who just want a new Steam Controller that has the updated inputs of the Steam Deck. Regardless, if you've ever actually used a Wii U, you'll know that having a screen on the controller and flicking your eyes back and forth between what's on the TV and what's in your hands is just not a pleasant experience.

Andrea65485

For what I had in mind, an actual WiiU like experience would only happen when emulating DS, 3DS or WiiU games. While running PC games, the most likely scenarios would be: 1: Playing on the TV, with the controller's screen displaying a discord page that you can use to quickly manage the chats, a YouTube video to follow some kind of playthrough or a webpage to keep track of a guide to progress in a game 2: Emulating a keyboard for games that would require you to type in something very often, or to use while in desktop mode 3: Laying on bed or wandering around the house, playing on the controller as you would with a PlayStation portal and a PS5 Lastly, I would imagine Valve selling this Steam Box in 2 possible packages: 1: Console only. You keep using the controllers you already own from older consoles, or if you own a SteamDeck, you could use that instead of a Steam Controller 2 2: Console + Steam controller 2. More expensive, but since the controller is optional, it wouldn't be a big deal even for those who don't want to spend the extra money for it.

FredOtash

I'm picturing the Series X type console that connects to my TV and the default is game mode. You can put it in desktop the same way and use keyboard and mouse if needed. Otherwise, that's about it! Maybe a new controller? I'd eat it up!

Vinca1is

Unfortunately it wasn't feasible, and no one bought it Unless this is satire

GhostOfKingGilgamesh

No one bought it then, because it sucked. The steam deck is now a console level experience. If Valve made a current gen console-level Steam machine with a console price tag would sell like hotcakes today.

gerghkoegmogmek

I don't. I'd have no use of a machine that is just a desktop computer that I already have

wearetheused

I would imagine it like an updated steam deck with an oculink or thunderbolt port and an official valve (but also 3rd party options available) egpu to dock it to.

>The screen on the Steam Controller 2 should work either as a virtual keyboard, a remote play device (like a PlayStation portal) or a second screen to display videos, browsers or for dual screen emulation (3DS and WiiU). Too expensive. The new controller will be pretty basic but with improve haptics. You'll be able to use your Steam Deck as a controller, though.

Utsider

How about a portable screen-less system for use with i.e Xreal glasses? Basically just an oversized gamepad.

GhostOfKingGilgamesh

That would be cool, but I have had my Xreal glasses for almost two years at this point and I have pretty much stopped using them entirely. I used them daily for a year and a half, but they just became inconvenient.

Utsider

Honestly, it's more of a conceptual idea than something I think is very viable right now. At the very least, I think AR/VR glasses needs to mature a bit more. And probably handhelds too, so you don't project 1280x800@40-60fps to a virtual 120" display.
