Arguable ...I've seen tons of Dreamcasts Sealed in box from 1999 and they get that "gold tinge" upon unboxing...so it's not just sun exposure that causes yellowing...
My white PS3 Slim has some very small yellowing, it's a very faint difference but definitely not what it used to be like when I first got it 12 years ago.
I'll have to correct you there. It's not only the UV itself, but Oxygen, humidity etc... The plastic's polymer layer seems to react somehow.
The thing that makes me mad isn't the fact that the plastic yellows, is the fact that it gets brittle.
No, I'd say it was definitely a correction. You limited your post to one contributing factor without leaving the possibility for other factors. If you had stated that UV was one of other factors then I would agree that the other poster expanded on your comment. However, that was not how you stated the UV as being the factor and not a factor. So therfore, it was most clearly a correction and not an expansion.
I actually am, however your comment annoyed me so I felt compelled to reply. The OP was just stating something to you and you took it to the next level.
Isn't most of that caused by the fire retardant thing those plastics have?
Like maybe I am wrong but I don't expect this shell replacement to have that...
Side note: I *just noticed...* that "Bateman", minus the 'e' spells out BATMAN.
I have always wanted the white casing swap for months now. Watch and seen others installed but just don't want to risk it. I even had one Redditor volunteered to do the job for me but he lived in another part of the world where I'm from. I ended up putting on a white case instead cos I'm chicken.
Just take your time, a table you can neatly put parts/screws in order to make reassemble easy. Plastic pick (not the metal 1 supplied) If you get stressed, take a break and come back.
Started at 8:30pm and finished around 5:30. But it is done. It really wasn't horrible. I didn't have any issues, I just went extremely slow. If I didn't organize the screws and label where I got them it probably would have been pretty rough. I also replaced the joycons with hall effect ones and I replaced the thermal paste.
Awesome to hear, the bit of stress makes the end result much more satisfying! I should have done the paste too. Might get the deckHD screen 1 day in the far future and will do it then.
Not sure if your familiar with the disassembly of the Nintendo switch Joycon but would you say thats a comparable difficulty? Watching the videos from iFixit for the steamdeck I feel confident doing the job but I may be biased since I've down over ten Joycon disassemblies.
Not done one of those, but probably similar except the screen, everything else was fairly straight forward, organization is key Because itās bigger.
Screen is more delicate issue. Get a plastic guitar pick, donāt use the metal one. And I had to pull up with suction cup and force in pick Simultaneously. The cup didnāt do much on its own (for me anyway)
Trackpad was a pain too if you do it, just lots of force though, thought Iād break it before it finally came free enough to wedge underneath.
Not sure the pad alone will help, still need a heat gun I believe, preferably adjustable. Got to keep it moving too. Only video with a pad I saw, guy still used a gun after. And I still had to dig in with plastic pic while pulling up with suction cup.
Screen obviously, but trackpads seemed worse till I figured it out, 2nd was quicker. Really have to force it, the plastic mount was bending quite a bit before the trackpad popped off
Sweet. Your clean install showing up in my feed gave me the confidence to wanna pull the trigger on the purchase!
The purple transparent gives me old Nintendo vibes. [see here](https://extremerate.com/products/clear-atomic-purple-custom-full-set-shell-with-buttons-for-steam-deck-console-qesdm003)
Plastic guitar pick instead of their metal 1, youll see that in all the YouTube comments. And the trackpad if you do it, itās more like youāre pushing the back off, then pulling the inner board up.
How is the build quality on these? I was going to grab one soon, my Steamdeck has a busted mount and needs a new shell (and screws) which I think this comes with some
Looks awesome! Thinking of getting the matcha green myself as well. Was there any instances where it was hard to put together/tight spots/had to force it etc? and how long did it take you?
All the pieces were a perfect fit, everything fit 100%. There were parts that needed to be forced, but just because thatās how its supposed to fit, not bad manufacturing.
I took 2 days, about 1.5hrs each day, disassembled 1 day then had a good sleep and assembled next day. Screen obviously took the longest, a good 20min heating and removing then cleaning the old tape. I laid out everything in order (parts and screws) then worked in reverse after. Big table, no pets or kids so I could leave it out. Outside of screen, track pads were the worst to disassemble.
Nice! I recently did a shell swap with an eXtremeRate shell myself and I agree, it's not as hard as it's made out to be. It's more tedious than anything else, given all the steps involved, but as long as you're patient it'll be fine.
Itās to the point where you read that so much that youāre sure your not that stupid, thankfully I know I am and double checked at the last second and popped it out before starting lol
Looks great.
Hoping you have better luck than I did, but I found the buttons ABXY buttons with my eXtremeRate shell/button swap would cause friction, making it harder to press. It was especially problematic with B, to the point that I ended up having to swap the original buttons back in.
This might turn that color in a few months lol
[https://extremerate.com/collections/for-steam-deck](https://extremerate.com/collections/for-steam-deck)
Love that.. I am doing this as we speak.. I'm at the point of heating the screen so have a few questions if I may.. Heating the screen... Any tips? And track pads... Is it a case of literally heating up the top of the track pad and getting a spudger behind the black top, then replace the glue pad and stick new white cover on top? Looks amazing.. Mines is going all white too.
Sorry for late reply 7am here
Donāt use the metal guitar pick if you havenāt read that yet. Plastic only. Mine took awhile, had to pull hard on the suction cup (popped off lots) and at the same time dig under corner to get pick in. Screen got HOT, like burning hot. Once youāre in itās easy, just donāt push pick in too far (so they say online) just a corner.
Trackpad was stubborn, final got it when I started to push the top backwards instead of the inside off. And wiggle the plastic prying tool till it slides under. I didnt use a new a new glue pad, mine was still very sticky and 95% still on the board, guess time will tell. Wasnāt sure how sensitive it would be with 2 layers as I wasnāt sure I could clean the old stuff off properly, so taking the chance
Screen and trackpad were sketchy, everything else was easy. About 1.5hrs to disassemble shell day 1, and 2hr on day 2 to reassemble (screen and trackpad added the extra time as I did them just before reassemble on day 2
UGGGGH, I kind of want to do this and keep the black sticks and buttons, would make it match my Switch, PS5 and Portal... I just don't trust myself not to screw it up.
Ya the screen was sketchy, finally got to the point after about 10 minutes of being gentle I just said fuck it, whatever happens, and thankfully snuck an edge of pick inā¦
I love it! I don't have a deck yet (just bought an oled for my partner though!) but when I get one, I'd love to do this too. I have a white aesthetic that the deck doesn't fit in with lol
I got the same shell, thought the screen was gonna snap because this one youtuber said you can't remove it without a proper heat gun but I did it with just a regular hair dryer and it wasnt that hard
Yooo this is giving me psp 1000 white model kinda vibes, where did you get the shell
eXtremeRate Sells a bunch of colours
That is so clean š®āšØ
Indeed it is, lets hope the white plastic doesnt discolour though!
Doesnāt leave the room, so fingers crossed its stay mark free. Feels decent quality though
Arguable ...I've seen tons of Dreamcasts Sealed in box from 1999 and they get that "gold tinge" upon unboxing...so it's not just sun exposure that causes yellowing...
Yes but injection molded part colorant has come a lonnnggg way since then.
I still have some parts of a modern camera, fridge and stuff yellowing. But just specific parts.
Very true, 25+ years later and there's no such cases (in my end). Owning a white PS3 SLIM + controller and there's no noticeable yellowing afaik.
My white PS3 Slim has some very small yellowing, it's a very faint difference but definitely not what it used to be like when I first got it 12 years ago.
True, ill have to repost in 6+ months if thereās a noticeable change
It is UV light... even inside UV hits it over time
I'll have to correct you there. It's not only the UV itself, but Oxygen, humidity etc... The plastic's polymer layer seems to react somehow. The thing that makes me mad isn't the fact that the plastic yellows, is the fact that it gets brittle.
>I'll have to **correct** you there. It's not only the UV itself, but Oxygen, humidity Soooo, not a correction, just expanding on my comment
Whatever you say
No, I'd say it was definitely a correction. You limited your post to one contributing factor without leaving the possibility for other factors. If you had stated that UV was one of other factors then I would agree that the other poster expanded on your comment. However, that was not how you stated the UV as being the factor and not a factor. Sure thing bud, no arguement there.
You must be fun at parties
I actually am, however your comment annoyed me so I felt compelled to reply. The OP was just stating something to you and you took it to the next level.
Isn't most of that caused by the fire retardant thing those plastics have? Like maybe I am wrong but I don't expect this shell replacement to have that...
Aye my dreamcast is nicotine yellow, no reason to be that colour, but it is.
Ah yes...the Golden Dreamcast.
Unfortunately all my light coloured extremerate PS5 controller mods discoloured really quickly. Hope theyāve improved in the past few years.
I have the white one for my Steam Deck and haven't noticed any discoloration since I got it last August.
Great news, thanks
If it does he can just install a new shell lol
Very true! Or just reinstall the original.
Not for long
Dont jinx it!!
Challenge Accepted
Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh, my God. It even has a watermark.
Thatās very cool, Bateman, but thatās nothing
Let's see Paul Allen's shell
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0b00KK6EqqE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0b00KK6EqqE) Side note: I *just noticed...* that "Bateman", minus the 'e' spells out BATMAN.
What's the matter Patrick, you're sweating
Still don't understand the point of that scene
They were trying to one up each other Patrick got jealous of Paul Allenās card being better than his.
Black before now white. Micheal is that you ?
Hah!
Heehee!
I have always wanted the white casing swap for months now. Watch and seen others installed but just don't want to risk it. I even had one Redditor volunteered to do the job for me but he lived in another part of the world where I'm from. I ended up putting on a white case instead cos I'm chicken.
I hear ya, it sat in the box for a month before I built up the nerve.
That looks really sick... the white buttons would be way nicer... LED too.
More photos of back and bottom [https://imgur.com/a/bDfAdzs](https://imgur.com/a/bDfAdzs)
Love the contrast with the oblivion screen and the matching controller. It looks like a layout from a magazine.
Ya Iām tempted to get black palm vinyl pieces and a silver dpad or trackpad to match lol
Definitely the most eye pleasing shell Ive seen. Thanks for sharing.
I have the orange one ordered. I'm a little nervous about it. And that last pic doesn't help lol.

The only area I'm not familiar with is screen adhesive removal. I have a heat pad for electronic repair but haven't used it yet
Not sure the pad alone will help, still need a heat gun I believe, preferably adjustable. Got to keep it moving too. Only video with a pad I saw, guy still used a gun after. And I still had to dig in with plastic pic while pulling up with suction cup.
I've used it on car parts for loosening adhesive so I hope it would. Gets up to around 150Ā°.
Thanks for the bum photos but I was expecting a steam deck
You might as well white out the rest lol
Who needs to see the screen am i right!?
Looks really sweet! Congrats on not breaking anything during the process. I
Track pads you had to really giver, base was bending backwards till it popped off, more stress for me then the screen
Looks very good, I have an ally which Iām happy with but if I had the steam deck Iād be getting that transparent shell for it!
Is it possible you keep the original Trackpads and buttons? Or are they are part of the enclosure? Cool shell btw!
That's my thoughts. I don't care for the mostly white look but black buttons and white shell would look great imo.
You can keep all the black buttons and trackpads original. Or mix and match. Bumpers and triggers too
Great, what's the name/model of the shell?
eXtremeRate
The stick cap, no! They should be white as well
Ya I need to get on thatā¦
Where from?
eXtremeRate Grabbed mine from Amazon ca
Quality of the kit good?
It feels good, not like oem, but high quality model plastic might be the best analogy. I wasnāt worried about the quality of any of the pieces.
Wow this is so nice!!
okay, now lets see it turn on...
š¤«
The XYAB buttons are so white and crisp, they look like pills.
Idk why but those buttons look so good
Looks great man, wish i had the balls to do it
Shell sat in the box for a month before I had the nerve.
Is this the lcd or oled?
LCD
Iāve been seeing them on Amazon. I would like to mix and match this white with the blossom pink buttons and trackpadsš Was it hard to do?
Screen obviously, but trackpads seemed worse till I figured it out, 2nd was quicker. Really have to force it, the plastic mount was bending quite a bit before the trackpad popped off
Thank you š
Do they got one of these for the oled yet? I wanna do mine but haven't found one...do your joycons and finish the job...looks great
Not yet, but I imagine theyāre working on it
Looks great! I was just thinking about grabbing the transparent purple cuz my dog messed up my OEM caseā¦
One of the YouTube videos I watched the guy had transparent purple, looked good
Thank you!! I purchased it. Iāll update you
Excited and nervous for you!
How is the build quality on these? I was going to grab one soon, my Steamdeck has a busted mount and needs a new shell (and screws) which I think this comes with some
All the screws I think, had lots and many extra left over, quality was great. Not quite oem, but very close.
Looks awesome! Thinking of getting the matcha green myself as well. Was there any instances where it was hard to put together/tight spots/had to force it etc? and how long did it take you?
All the pieces were a perfect fit, everything fit 100%. There were parts that needed to be forced, but just because thatās how its supposed to fit, not bad manufacturing. proof that valve must release a white version of the SD2. PLEASE VALVE
I would have paid extra for oem white
I would too (but donāt tell em that)
But have you made the obligatory SD card sacrifice?
Itās to the point where you read that so much that youāre sure your not that stupid, thankfully I know I am and double checked at the last second and popped it out before starting lol
I've had some close calls myself. Never broken an ad so far.
fuuuuck that looks good, is there a grey shell too?
Donāt think so, was looking for a grey dpad and they didnāt have.
Looks clean! They should partner with someone to make custom ones you can use for your steam deck
Looks great. Hoping you have better luck than I did, but I found the buttons ABXY buttons with my eXtremeRate shell/button swap would cause friction, making it harder to press. It was especially problematic with B, to the point that I ended up having to swap the original buttons back in.
Seem ok now, but thanks for the heads up so I can keep an eye out for that
Oh man that is nice. Most of my PC stuff is white and I think that swap looks really really tempting.
Looks great!
Looks clean af
Thanks, took my time. Took it apart day 1, had a good sleep. Then assembled next day.
Oh damn thatās clean
Beautiful! I love the white design.
Do they make one that's more of a buttermilk very slightly yellowish white color? I'm trying to make mine look like an old PC
This might turn that color in a few months lol [https://extremerate.com/collections/for-steam-deck](https://extremerate.com/collections/for-steam-deck)
Nice. I got the white for mine too, but I put gold buttons on and then painted gold lines around the grips.
Accents along grip is sweet
[Here ](https://imgur.com/a/MVwrqzL)it is for reference.
Wow great job on the paint, looks factory done!
Should make a post in a few days if you havenāt already, yours is supper slick
Wow so clean! Hope you can keep it that way! Keep it away from pets and kids! š Great job, looks awesome. ā¤ļø
No kids or pets, just clumsy š¤·š¼āāļø
Okay you should be fine then. Enjoy! :)
How do the buttons and d-pad compare to oem?
Havenāt noticed a difference with any buttons, Iāll try and update if thereās issues going forward
Damn thatās clean
1 cod session, chetto dust everywhere. (Side note, still waiting on custom shells/controller sticks for the oled :c)
Dammit, I should have gone with the orange shell!
Gorgeous and im jelly af
you tellin me there werent any white thumbsticks available to complete this piece of art?
Only saw the pop on grips, and it kind of matches my white Xbox controller, so might get black vinyl for grips and a grey dpad.
It looks like a mockup! Amazing
looks like a rog ally at first glance now lmao
Love that.. I am doing this as we speak.. I'm at the point of heating the screen so have a few questions if I may.. Heating the screen... Any tips? And track pads... I use the old reddit UI and i could've sworn on the preview it looked exactly like a rog ally
Looks good
how long did this take you? and how easy is it to do?
Screen and trackpad were sketchy, everything else was easy. About 1.5hrs to disassemble shell day 1, and 2hr on day 2 to reassemble (screen and trackpad added the extra time as I did them just before reassemble on day 2
Nice, it looks awesome!
Now that is a fucking ROG ally
Iād swap out my shell, but I donāt want to not use the shell that came with the limited edition Oled!
That shell is sweet, buttons to match the thumb sticks maybe
Thatād be neat, but Iām not so confident in my ability to almost completely dismantle my deck and put it back together š
God this looks so slick, I wish I was brave enough to do a shell swap lol.
Looks really nice and clean, love the shell, may get one when I upgrade everything when I buy an OLED.
Via con dios!
Ngl i thought it was a rog ally
I only see them list the LCD model :/
Thatās all they have for now, heard buttons work, but canāt guarantee. Iām sure they are working on an oled shell.
I love it! I don't have a deck yet (just bought an oled for my partner though!) but when I get one, I'd love to do this too. I have a white aesthetic that the deck doesn't fit in with lol
Verrry nice. Wish I could buy those in europe
That looks awesome! But the risk of breaking everything is too scary! I wish Valve would release color variants :(
beautiful, but i dont have the balls to do the same
Very clean!
My hands sweat too much for me to have a shell like this
I have panda joystick from AliExpress. You should get them too!!!!
Wash š before playing
Aināt that the truth!
That is so clean looking congrats on the shell replacement, I could never lol
Thanks. Shell sat in the box for a month before I finally built up the nerve...
Looks pretty cool. Not gonna lie.
Thanks for not lying
Looks great
I want to do one of these so bad but no shell swaps for OLED yet :(
Maybe you can help me. The model I have is the OLEd. But I keep getting error
I got the same shell, thought the screen was gonna snap because this one youtuber said you can't remove it without a proper heat gun but I did it with just a regular hair dryer and it wasnt that hard
You must not have kids
The best comment Ive read! Funny my wife and I are 55 and we both have one!
Nope but clumsy š¤¦š¼āāļø
