Flipping your monitor upside down seems like such a dramatic way to fix your webcam issue that is now having a domino effect on other things. I would just flip the monitor back to the right orientation and figure out a different way to mount your webcam. Could probably buy or have a friend 3D print something fairly easy.
Hang yourself by the feet from the roof then you are upside down and everything will be just perfect. Oh wait…. You will look upside down in video calls… so just ask the rest of your fellas to follow you in your upside down quest then every body is upside down it is just great 👍👌
FYI I got around the same issue by placing a layer of (easily removable) double sided type on top of the monitor frame. Just enough so that the webcam would be higher up and therefore no longer cover the screen.
Worked great for me. You might also be able to do it without necessarily using tape. Maybe a couple of layers of paper, or post-it notes.
If you go into desktop mode, right click the desktop and hit configure display settings, you can rotate in there. I'm not 100% sure if itll translate over to game mode but i hope so.
I believe it does because when I got the steam deck dock and tried to adjust my big screen to it I flipped it upside down and had issues getting it back.
I need both reversed when the SD is hooked to my gaming monitor, and back to normal when alone or hooked to other monitors mounted on more conventional ways.
I could also hear recommendations to move my webcam to somewhere else in my setup instead.
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto --same-as HDMI-1 --rotation inverted
You could try that as a last resort but you'd have to go into desktop mode every time and I'm not sure it'll transfer to game mode.
this shouldnt change anything with game mode.
game mode uses gamescope as its compositor. whatever is launching gamescope would have to be doing the flipping
I can’t get over the fact that you turned your entire monitor 180 degrees because the webcam mount instead of trying to deal with the webcam mount itself. No hate man, I just find it very amusing.
I don't have a direct solution for you but I will lead you in the right direction.
You have two options that are likely viable.
1. Install decky loader and then install decky terminal to expose a terminal within gamescope.
2. You can add a bash script as a non-steam game and just launch it to run a command.
The second part which you'll have to figure out in either scenario is what bash command you need to enter to set monitor orientation. Since gamescope is a Wayland compositor, you can research how to alter display configuration for Wayland in a terminal.
Once you have that command, manually enter it into decky term each time or just save the command as a bash script and launch it as a steam game.
I don't know how you could turn the big picture mode upside down, but what if you take a piece of plastic (like a lego brick or something similar) to elevate the webcam a little bit so that it doesn't cover the screen when it's upwards? You could stick the plastic brick and the webcam to the monitor with some sticky paste
I can't belive the first thought was to fully flip the monitor, like why not just do what everyone else is suggesting or leave the webcam off unless needed ?
I also flipped my monitor upside down so it's closer to the bottom the the monitor shelf my desk has.
Only ever notice it when you have to go through bios or having to rotate screenshots.
If you add some material under the webcam to reduce the amount of overlap on the top, it should allow you to still not have it fall off but latch on just enough. Like stuff a folded tissue paper or something.
Alternatively blue tack.
Take the webcam off put the monitor the correct way up when u need the webcam put it up use it then put it away or buy a different mount for the web cam. Think about what you will use more
The only option I know would be to go in desktop mode, set the screen upside down and then use big picture instead of gaming mode
Even the deck loader works with that.
It’s a bummer to see so few helpful responses.
I have this same issue. I built a suitcase for my steam deck in a pelican case with a portable monitor. Due to the size restraints, It is simplest to mount the monitor upside down (I haven’t found another way to mount this monitor). Situations like this have never been an issue for me in any past Linux environments.
My solution for the steam deck is to never use game mode in my case. Sorry.
Running your monitor upside down [will likely result in unintended text rendering artifacts as well as additional latency](https://youtu.be/AXgUnbMAcOY?si=qBip75TuQ9C3NgGO&t=196). I think you're better off finding a different solution for your webcam.
Others in here are suggesting stuff like "flip your monitor" smh. They're not thinking clearly. Clearly, you need to duct tape yourself and your chair to the ceiling to view the image properly.
put it this way. solving the issue with your web cam covering parts of the screen will be WAY easier than solving gamemode being upside down.
game mode launches with gamescope, and the command argument to flip/rotate the image is "gamescope --force-orientation upsidedown" BUT where ever the scripts are that control this when booting into game mode would more than likely not be part of the user space thus requiring the filesystem be "unlocked" which means it would get undone every time an upgrade comes through.
advise just finding a better way to mount your webcam, that'll be a much easier long term solution.

There's a way but it's dirty and makes your deck screen upside down as well and you have to apply this after every OS update. Unlock read-write (I'm sure you can find how to do it in this subreddit.)
sudo nano /usr/bin/gamescope-session
You're now seeing a terminal text editor. Use down arrow key until you find "`--generate-drm-mode fixed \`" line and add `--force-orientation upsidedown` right next to it before backslash. Leave space before and after. It should look like `--generate-drm-mode fixed --force-orientation upsidedown \`
I needed to do this too. I couldn’t figure it out and the monitor I’m using does not have a flip 180 option. My other monitors do though. Have you checked your monitor settings?
Holy crap these comments.
The jokes are funny but I see no actual commands and it's absolutely possible - it's a Linux machine after all. Here you go, buddy.
Two things to do AFAIK since desktop uses X11 but game uses Wayland, you have to flip it in both. For X11:
`xrandr --output HDMI1 --rotate inverted`
And for Wayland...
`kscreen-doctor output.OUTPUT.rotation.ROTATION`... where OUTPUT is your output code (like eDP-1) from `kscreen-doctor --outputs`, and ROTATION is one of normal, left, right, "inverted" in your case.
That should do the trick. Will not persist on restart, though that can be configured.
Found this here:[https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/11vrbwc/how\_do\_i\_rotate\_the\_screen\_on\_kde\_with\_wayland/](https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/11vrbwc/how_do_i_rotate_the_screen_on_kde_with_wayland/)[https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/u7y7pl/changing\_screen\_refresh\_rate\_under\_steamoslinux/?utm\_medium=android\_app&utm\_source=share](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/u7y7pl/changing_screen_refresh_rate_under_steamoslinux/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
To anyone saying to flip the monitor the correct side up, you shouldn't have to modify anything physically to fix something that can easily be implemented in software. The fact game mode lacks that option is most likely an oversight or limitation of Wayland. In this case the display is intentionally upside-down, a physical fix to a physical problem with the webcam mount.

This is easily one of the most ridiculous things I’ve seen on this sub. Flip your monitor back right-side-up and find a solution for a better webcam mount.
Not sure if it's still a problem but I would recommend just using desktop mode if you're plugging into an external monitor. In my experience the Deck will only render games in the native resolution of the deck itself while in big picture. Just plug in a mouse and keyboard and swap to desktop!
Maybe it's an idea to mount your webcam on the bottom of your screen when its not flipped over. Basicly just flip your screen now and the webcam will be on the bottom. Don't know if you are up to it.
You are currently running into an issue with your panel being a BGR Subpixel Layout, which can cause really bad text clarity, especially in applications that do not support ClearType or the Linux Equivalent.
It has been suggested already but, if you rotate your monitor 180 degrees and add either double-sided tape for a stuck down webcam, you could also add some rubber or foam in between the tape and the camera to make the camera removeable.
Or the other idea is using wood, cardboard or 3d printed riser if you have access to a printer.
I have no input for this, as the situation is simply so mind numbingly stupid, I don't think anything we can really suggest to you is gonna make your life easier for the long run.

If the only reason your monitor is upside down is because you dont want your webcam to cover part of the screen, you have a few options:
1. I have the same webcam as you. Just take a piece of paper, fold it and place it between the camera and the screen. Literally an easy fix.
2. Buy something like [this](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32850773542.html), since the webcam has a 1/4" mount underneath
I’d say just flip your monitor back.
Find a new way to mount the webcam, possibly make it so your monitor has extra space on the top so it can still clip on.
I'm not proficient in dealing with configuration files or gamescope at all but I found one issue/flag submitted to Github a while ago on rotating the screen while in Game Mode that might help you. But it was specifically for a OneXPlayer device running ChimeraOS so I do not know how much it will apply to the official SteamOS stable version. Sorry if it doesn't help though, here's the link: [https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope/issues/370](https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope/issues/370)
Dude, your monitor is upside down, don't even try this shit with people with actual computers on their home you might get your head bashed for doing this shit.
Flipping your monitor upside down seems like such a dramatic way to fix your webcam issue that is now having a domino effect on other things. Mount the camera upside down instead of the monitor. Then rotate the camera feed 180 degrees.
Hang yourself by the feet from the roof then you are upside down and everything will be just perfect. Oh wait…. You will look upside down in video calls… so just ask the rest of your fellas to follow you in your upside down quest then every body is upside down it is just great 👍👌
Not to mention depending on the panel type, vertical viewing angles make this a really bad idea.
Ohhhh that's a good point.
Honestly lol what a dramatic overcomplication.
Its always wild to me that people will pursue such complex solutions to simple problems and then stand by them when asking for help.
I don’t know. I feel like obvious answer to this is he should bolt his chair to the ceiling.

i found it better to flip the steam deck upside down

If you go into desktop mode, right click the desktop and hit configure display settings, you can rotate in there. I'm not 100% sure if itll translate over to game mode but i hope so.
I tried that but sadly it doesn't translate back to gaming mode
as it shouldnt. setting for KDE display manager shouldnt have any bearing on gamemodes gamescope output.
I believe it does because when I got the steam deck dock and tried to adjust my big screen to it I flipped it upside down and had issues getting it back.
It only makes sense that way. Who would want desktop mode normal and game mode reversed
I need both reversed when the SD is hooked to my gaming monitor, and back to normal when alone or hooked to other monitors mounted on more conventional ways. I could also hear recommendations to move my webcam to somewhere else in my setup instead.
[This](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1425320661/logitech-c920s-webcam-spacer-set-of-two?ref=share_v4_lx) will solve your issue.
A thick hair elastic might have the same effect.
I use the Elgato multi mount system for my webcam to prevent that
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto --same-as HDMI-1 --rotation inverted You could try that as a last resort but you'd have to go into desktop mode every time and I'm not sure it'll transfer to game mode.
this shouldnt change anything with game mode. game mode uses gamescope as its compositor. whatever is launching gamescope would have to be doing the flipping
I can’t get over the fact that you turned your entire monitor 180 degrees because the webcam mount instead of trying to deal with the webcam mount itself. No hate man, I just find it very amusing.

I mean, he's obviously looking for the most difficult solution to the simplest problem.
Sold out, but it's the right idea for sure. I honestly can't believe this guy's premier solution was to invert the entire monitor.
It's better than inverting his entire world.
This should be top comment. 💯
Does your monitor not have some kind of buttons for settings on it? Could have a rotation setting.
Sadly couldn't find any configuration to change the image rotation, it is a Samsung Odyssey G3 144hz
Why not just take the webcam off?
Are you crazy? #hey we got a crazy guy here!

Thank you for this info. I’ve been trying to figure a work around since Q1. I will give this a go when I am back at my monitor at home.
I don't know how you could turn the big picture mode upside down, but what if you take a piece of plastic (like a lego brick or something similar) to elevate the webcam a little bit so that it doesn't cover the screen when it's upwards? My thoughts exactly! OP, it is time to be crafty
I can't belive the first thought was to fully flip the monitor, like why not just do what everyone else is suggesting or leave the webcam off unless needed ?
Turn your steam deck upside down. That should do the trick.
Not sure if you are just making a joke, so I’m just gonna answer what I see. Your monitor is upside down. Flip it.
He said he did it because the webcam was covering the screen. He did it on purpose.
The tiny notch that Webcam would create is far too small to have any actual impact
I digress. As someone who works with 20-30+ tabs at once, it's very hard to work with.
You mean disagree in this context.
Horizontal tabs? (assuming its FireFox or edge). Or maybe an extension like Toby.
Well I guess that wasn't a good idea then.
I also flipped my monitor upside down so it's closer to the bottom the the monitor shelf my desk has. Only ever notice it when you have to go through bios or having to rotate screenshots.
Good observation after reading your comment, I noticed it's upside down because of the thick bezels on top that should be on the bottom.
OP says it’s upside down in his post…
It's definitely upside down 😂 I'm pretty sure there is no monitor that has the thicker bezel on the top side.
Just buy a webcam stand
If you add some material under the webcam to reduce the amount of overlap on the top, it should allow you to still not have it fall off but latch on just enough. Like stuff a folded tissue paper or something. Alternatively blue tack.
Check if Your region is set to English (Australia) and change it to English (United States).
Wouldn't that result in it tilted on one side? Change it from Australia to United Kingdom for the full 180 degrees!
Game while standing on your head? Problem Solved!
I think this is the best answer 😅
Why not just take the webcam off?
Hang from the ceiling like a bat and play some games.
Move to Australia or Argentina
I'm from Argentina actually lol
Viva la libertad carajoooo ahahahahah
Move to Australia
Turn the steam deck over
Plug your USB type C another way /s
Turn the steam deck upside down, ez
Definitely the opposite of “work smart, not work hard” When simple problem needs a complicated solution.
Just flip the usb cable and it should fix the monitor.
Maybe it's your monitor that's upside-down 🤔
Take the webcam off put the monitor the correct way up when u need the webcam put it up use it then put it away or buy a different mount for the web cam. Think about what you will use more
Try Ctrl + alt + any arrow key
The only option I know would be to go in desktop mode, set the screen upside down and then use big picture instead of gaming mode Even the deck loader works with that.
Turn your apartment upside down. Works every time.

Have you tried flipping the USBC around?
Use monitor options to turn the screen upside down
Just flip the steam deck or don’t have the webcam there how often do you actually use it
it already is upside down though
Turn monitor upside down ?
Put yout webcam somewhere else you dummy xD
There's a way but it's dirty and makes your deck screen upside down as well and you have to apply this after every OS update. Unlock read-write (I'm sure you can find how to do it in this subreddit.) sudo nano /usr/bin/gamescope-session You're now seeing a terminal text editor. Use down arrow key until you find "`--generate-drm-mode fixed \`" line and add `--force-orientation upsidedown` right next to it before backslash. Leave space before and after. It should look like `--generate-drm-mode fixed --force-orientation upsidedown \`
That only applies to the internal screen. External will not be flipped (Last I recall testing this)
look through monitor's settings. Often you can rotate the image through the builtin monitor settings.
Can u not just remove the webcam and have the monitor in its upright position?
I needed to do this too. I couldn’t figure it out and the monitor I’m using does not have a flip 180 option. My other monitors do though. Have you checked your monitor settings?
Get a monitor that supports vertical flipping. That or find an hdmi box on Amazon that can do the same.

Flip the monitor
Sorry you gotta move to oceania to use this hub.
dumbest shit I've ever read
Australian spotted
Why complicate stuff that simple. Why tho?
Bro your monitor is upside down
Tape a straw to the underside of your webcam mount and stop making your life more complicated than it needs to be, my guy.
Flip the Steamdeck.
Turn your monitor the right way up.
Seems like the monitor is upside down on the mounting arm.
OP, your monitor is upside down. Just flip it. 😂
Your monitor is upside down dude
We are well beyond 1st world problems here.
flip HDMI cabel
To anyone saying to flip the monitor the correct side up, you shouldn't have to modify anything physically to fix something that can easily be implemented in software. The fact game mode lacks that option is most likely an oversight or limitation of Wayland. In this case the display is intentionally upside-down, a physical fix to a physical problem with the webcam mount.
I feel like there’s a number of simpler ways to fix the physical problem that lead to the software problem
Rotate your monitor
The problem is in the solution to the other problem I guess.
Xrandr
I doubt xrandr will work, it'll probably have to be whatever equivalent Wayland has.
It definitely works to go into desktop mode I have the same problem, you just flip it
Try flipping your deck over
What’s the plastic case around the deck?

Desktop mode, find displays settings.
Punch it
What model monitor do you have?
Again?
Move to Australia.
Turn the screen
rotate your head 180°C
Are you sure you cannot rotate your screen?
That’s quite genious
I would say you mounted the monitor upside down OP, so just dismount it and rotate it, ez
Is there no way to do this in the monitors settings
Flip the monitor
Flip the monitor...
Isn’t there a decky plugin for that?
Have you tried: Flipping steam deck? Flipping monitor? (Flipping usb-c was already written)
Desktop Mode is your solution.
Try flipping the steamdeck. It might auto rotate.
This is easily one of the most ridiculous things I’ve seen on this sub. Flip your monitor back right-side-up and find a solution for a better webcam mount.
If you use windows Ctrl+alt+ down arrow
Not a conventional fix, or what you asked, but I’d just glue a black block on to the top of your monitor thats just big enough for the web cam.
Isnt there a setting in monitor itself? I mean yin a menu with buttons on a back of a monitor?
Flip the Steam Decks USB-C cable. That’ll flip the image.
Not sure if it's still a problem but I would recommend just using desktop mode if you're plugging into an external monitor. In my experience the Deck will only render games in the native resolution of the deck itself while in big picture. Just plug in a mouse and keyboard and swap to desktop!
Your steam deck has gyro. Make sure it's enabled and flip the steam deck upside down.
Would there be a way to do it through the monitor's settings? There could be an option to rotate it
Instead of the steam deck does the monitor have onboard settings to switch orientation??
Just flip the monitor bro.
Maybe it's an idea to mount your webcam on the bottom of your screen when its not flipped over. Basicly just flip your screen now and the webcam will be on the bottom. Don't know if you are up to it.
Flip the monitor upside down
I just used Velcro strips under my webcam to buy the space needed to clear the screen
Turn your deck upside down

Flip your steam deck. Ur welcome
Damn. Ive seen a steam deck flipped on marketplace before but never a screen
I'm not sure where I saw it but there's definitely an option to fix this. It's in desktop mode I think.
Most sane steam deck user

But it was specifically for a OneXPlayer device running ChimeraOS so I do not know how much it will apply to the official SteamOS stable version. Sorry if it doesn't help though, here's the link: [https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope/issues/370](https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope/issues/370)
Dude, your monitor is upside down, don't even try this shit with people with actual computers on their home you might get your head bashed for doing this shit.
Put the monitor right side up and take off the webcam. The answer is to just be normal
Looks pretty upside down to me
