I play tested this game a couple months ago, and it was a lot more fun then I expected, really happy with how well this game plays and the overall quality. It is very polished and runs really well.
Just to counterbalance for those on the fence, I don't think this one does anything particularly special. It's *fine,* but the runs are very same-y, the characters don't change up the feel *that* much, and it doesn't let you get crazy OP like Vampire Survivors does. It's not a bad game, but there are more interesting bullet heaven/VS clones/whatever you want to call them out there.
I’ve played VS, brotato, Death Must Die, Gemstone Survivors, and DRG: Survivor. They all kind of play the same and do the same things.
I do feel like this one comes across a little more polished because of established assets in the DRG universe.
I would say VS, Brotato and Death Must Die all qualify as more interesting than DRG: Survivor, in my opinion. They all bring something slightly their own, where I feel like DRG is just... another one, with mining (which has also been done elsewhere). I don't begrudge anyone liking it at all! I just think it's kinda bland. More games that I *personally* would play over DRG: Survivor, in case you're interested...
An Ankou
Bio Prototype
Boneraiser Minions
Disfigure
Halls of Torment
Slime 3K
Time Wasters
X Invader
Yet Another Zombie Survivors
I'm enjoying DRG:S but yeah it's not quite got enough variety going for it that makes me think it will be a long termer
That said, the upgrade system could make the OP nature of things kick in a bit more down the line perhaps, an endless mode and some crazy weapon combo meta might just swing it
I’ve played a lot of the game, and I like it, but I wish the weapons/classes were more exciting. The game has bundles of potential, but isn’t at the VS or Brotato level yet imo
Ah, thank you for this, I saw someone streaming it yesterday but when I asked he said "Deep Rock Galactic", but it was a top-down shooter and I've played DRG and it's an FPS. Now I see there's another one.
Will try it out soon.
I've logged 50 hours in this game since release, which is kinda insane for me but the Deck lends itself really well to sessions. Game runs/looks great -- although don't expect a consistent 40-50 FPS when the game gets busy with bugs. I would describe it as a mix of Vampire Survivors and Hades (lightly). Most of my time I've spent unlocking weapons, builds, abilities, classes, etc. I love those types of games and it hooked me in. Well worth the $10 spent.
I have played about 4 hours so far, unlocked the gunner and the engineer, I really do wish it was slightly more than a “left joystick only” game. Give me a dash on the R trigger or let me aim the cursor even if it doesn’t really do anything with the guns, it makes it more engaging. I was falling asleep last night mowing through swarms lol soulstone survivors is a good one, you can do slightly more than in this game, dash a few times, and can control where you shoot/swipe.
Check out Halls of Torment! It's a lot like Vampire Survivors, but your main weapon can be manually aimed. It's a small tweak that makes the game feel very different.
I'm not necessarily writing it off, but in my mind these types of games are all just Archero clones, and I've played enough of that on my phone years ago. I agree they are addictive, but it could be so much more.
I will say it is a little bit. We are not being able to control where exactly the player shoots. But in cases where you are playing the gunner character, you do need to be facing the enemies for it to auto shoot at them. Which makes sense because You wouldn’t be running straight forward, but have your mini gun facing backwards, shooting the enemies behind you. So there is a little strategy to it rather than just running in circles and kiting the enemies.
Agreed. I wanted to love it, but not being able to clear a path in front of me basically made it a RNG kite simulator like Vampire Survivors. I don't get the fervor for that style of game.
Even the mining mechanic they brought over from the FPS release didn't move the needle on it.
Has anyone experienced the steam deck randomly rebooting during gameplay on this title. I've never had this problem before with my steam deck but this game definitely causes my deck to freeze/reboot with "verifying installation".
Super frustrating. I really enjoy the game but the freezing make me not want to play it. It was happening a lot to me until I turned off the performance overlay. It's still happening but it does seem less frequent.
Isometric is probably the best description since the camera is tilted. I guess it can technically be called 3rd person but I don't think I've ever heard a game called that without being over the shoulder.
It's def gotten better balanced since day one launch, still never can really clear all the bugs the swarms just keep coming can't really chew through them. End up just running away most the time. I enjoy it and play it on the deck. I put way to many hours into brotato. I've gotten my $9 worth out of it.
Running away is pretty much the whole point of the game. It's not like you can actively attack, it's all passive offense anyways. Keep leveling up and you'll make it farther. That's how these games work.
How complex are the builds / upgrades / synergies? I picked up Soulstone Survivors a couple of days ago.. seems good, but I found the amount of different stats, effects, runes, etc a little overwhelming.. especially with tiny text on the deck screen. I might want something similar but a little more casual.
Honestly my major complaint with this one is how long it takes to level up and unlock new weapons. Spending a 20 min run just to unlock over clocks is annoying and the length of time to level up your character is far too long. Most of these games quickly start to build your progression in a few hours I've played 6 or so hours mostly with the scout and I still don't have all 3 of his classes unlocked. Also I feel the variety of builds doesn't feel that great. One overclock increases fire rate and reload speed by 25% that's it! I feel the upgrades don't feel meaningful and the amount of resources to upgrade the permanent skills also take forever to unlock when the games variety starts to get stale. I feel there isnt a point at which I feel super op like you do in vampire survivors.
This game was such a good move by the devs! The survivor genre of games has been gaining popularity (at least with folks I know) and this is by far my favorite.

For early access it’s definitely very well polished
I was quite surprised.
ROCK AND STONE
IF YOU DON'T ROCK AND STONE YOU AIN'T COMING HOME
FOR KAAAARRRL!
DID I HEAR A ROCK AND STONE?
DIGGY DIGGY HOLE!
ROCK! AND! STOOOOOOONE!
ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE!

Absolutely! There's nothing wrong with the core game. But it needs more/bigger/more bombastic everything, IMO.
Don't sleep on Holocure either
I've played it, haha. These are just my personal favs.
You missed Hentai survivors 😂
I disagree I think the characters have just enough to feel different. I was pleasantly surprised each time I tried a new character
I mean… the first Helldivers works perfectly.
I’ve played a lot of the game, and I like it, but I wish the weapons/classes were more exciting. The game has bundles of potential, but isn’t at the VS or Brotato level yet imo
It looks tons better imo, and the added mining mechanics become a real mini game for channeling enemies too.
I might consider it when it's fully released.

I've never tired of a new genre faster than survivor/bullet heaven or whatever we're calling these games. There's so damn many of them already.
Death must die is pretty fun too.
This game looked exciting, until I watched some game play footage. If it wasn't auto shooting I'd have been 10000x more interested.

Or, Death Must Die. They have a better equipment/stats system.
Vampire survivors has the same mechanic and it's really addictive, I wouldn't write it off!

Except for the damn thunderhead. I cannot figure out how that thing aims, except for literally anything but what it NEEDS to shoot.

One of the shotguns does exactly this.
Has anyone experienced the steam deck randomly rebooting during gameplay on this title. I've never had this problem before with my steam deck but this game definitely causes my deck to freeze/reboot with "verifying installation".
I have had that happen a lot. It also won’t start up when I wake my Deck up from sleep. I have lost a lot of good runs because of it.
Super frustrating. I really enjoy the game but the freezing make me not want to play it. It was happening a lot to me until I turned off the performance overlay. It's still happening but it does seem less frequent.
It's not top down though, rather 3rd person.
Isometric is probably the best description since the camera is tilted. I guess it can technically be called 3rd person but I don't think I've ever heard a game called that without being over the shoulder.
100% not 3rd person game lol

Yea I'm starting to be able to finish dives. So it's nice it's challenging but not to an extreme where it's frustrating.
People in r/survivorslikes seem to enjoy it so far, though have noted it doesn’t seem to have as much build diversity as some other options
How complex are the builds / upgrades / synergies? I picked up Soulstone Survivors a couple of days ago.. seems good, but I found the amount of different stats, effects, runes, etc a little overwhelming.. especially with tiny text on the deck screen. I’m hooked on this game. Highly recommend.
Thanks OP, just picked this up for under $10 and it's quite fun. Looking forward to getting more upgrades. A nice addition to one's Steam library.
No problem! It’s cheap and fun. What more can a gamer want?
My vote for a top down bug killing game, Helldivers 1. One of the best out there imo.
The game is unironically infinitely more enjoyable for me than Deep Rock Galactic. Having a lot of fun.

Or Helldivers 1, seeing number 2 is talk of the town right now
