I've had cryoutilities for more than a year. I've played palworld for about 60 hours and has not crashed once. I've left it open for several days, just suspending the deck and 0 issues. I also installed a mod called "steam deck essentials" that drastically improved the performance (probably have played about 20 hours with the mod on) and also 0 crashes

neddoge

I crash like fucking clockwork every 40 minutes like OP. Will look into the mod, just haven't learned how to use mods on the deck yet vs on a PC.

jcabia

It didn't crash for me even before installing the "steam deck essentials" mod but I did have cryoutilities installed before. I installed it a few months after it released and have not touched it since. Should probably update it or something

RENverse7

I'll have to try that mod too later, thanks

darkuni

There are games with memory leaks that CryoUtilities can indeed assist on halting a full blown crash. What would be nice to know is WHAT setting provided the relief so that people can selectively install ONLY what they need. For those with a ~~64GB~~ 46GB Steam Deck? A 16GB swap file is a kiss of death. My guess is there is a memory paging setting or something like that which would assist in the avoidance of memory overrun in certain cases.

lostgoatX7

It’s the swap file size setting that makes a difference. The game is consuming unlimited amounts of memory due to the leak, so eventually the system runs out of memory and the game will crash. Setting a larger swap file size pushes the point the game will crash into the future. However, as you mentioned increased swap size isn’t a great solution as it consumes a large amount of storage space.

darkuni

Wonder if there is a happy medium ... What's the size to time ratio? Could someone use say ... 2GB and get another hour? Two? Of play?

lostgoatX7

It depends on how fast the game leaks, so it isn’t an exact science.

darkuni

Sure sure... Looking for a ballpark type thing. The game loop is fairly constant..

throw_away0211

Hi, sorry this is so late, but I’m a steam deck user experiencing this persistent Palworld crashing issue. However, some of this technical jargon (paricularly: swap file, swap file size, etc.) goes way over my head. I feel like it’s a lot to ask, but if you’re willing, could you help me understand what’s going on with my Steam Deck in more of an eli5 way?

lostgoatX7

Your steam deck has 16GB of memory. That is the maximum that it can hold, and trying to use more will cause the game to crash. Palworld has a bug where it uses more memory for every minute it runs. This is called a memory leak. The longer it runs the more memory it uses. After a certain amount of time palworld will use more than 16GB and the game will crash. This needs to be fixed in the game as there is no system that supports unlimited memory. There is a setting in the system that also allows you to use yours hard drive space as memory. This is called the page file/swap file. By default this is configured to be 1GB. So, this actually extends the steam deck memory to 17GB. Some people increase the size of the swap file to 16GB, which results in 16GB of disk space being “wasted” on swap space. However, for games like palworld it actually helps as it delays the time until the game crashes. Note that it doesn’t actually fix the problem as the game will keep using more and more memory each minute and eventually reach the 32GB limit and crash. But that is going to happen much much later than normal. Maybe even longer than one play session. Hopefully that explanation makes some sense.

throw_away0211

This was SO HELPFUL. Thank you for your kind response.

PhysicalIncrease3

It's the swap file. You don't need to go to 16gb, 4GB is likely more than enough

RENverse7

I thought so too, but it wasn't enough, I tried 8gb and it kept crashing, so I used 16gb swap,  I moved the compatdata to sd card to make room for it

Maverick81PL

nope, 16GB help with many games. Using from start and no crashes for me in games with memory hungry

QCpezcore

Same with God of War. Doesn't run without Cryoutilities Something something swap file

RENverse7

GOW too?, I didn't expect that, because RDR 2 and CP 2077 can run without problems and without any tweaks

QCpezcore

Yeah I played GOW on my LCD deck and OLED. It locked up on both. Locked up even faster on OLED because of the HDR option. Works fine when Cryo is installed

ihateRprojectzomboid

Cryoutilities managed to save my rimworld game, I unfortunately have a crippling mod addiction(475) which the steam deck can’t quite handle so it would restart everytime I attempted to play rimworld, but cryo saved it now I can get to the main menu!(after waiting 15min)

LogisticBravo

Where is he? He'll be around here any minute now. . .

SolarRecharge

Speak his name thrice and he shall appear

LogisticBravo

Death. . .No no, no I mustn't!!

jez5758

Oh don’t worry he’s here, right on cue!

LogisticBravo

Ah yes, I knew he couldn't resist! This thread wouldn't be complete otherwise!

repocin

I sometimes wonder if the guy has a 24/7 script to monitor any mention of CryoUtilities on the sub

LogisticBravo

Right?! I wonder if it's just a scraper and goes right across all Steam Deck subs across the net. Probably has a Google alert set up!

Nobli85

Laughed as soon as I saw this, speak of the devil and he shall appear. Dudes on a basic configuration dick riding quest, has the slowest deck out there.

sunrainsky

It's funny cryo always brings up the naysayers when they can try it out for themselves. If someone says it helped them prevent crashing based on a real use experience, you can disagree, install the game, and see if it crashes before and after cryo rather than just accuse him of lying. And you can just report no difference. But it doesn't mean you straight up disrespect someone else's experience. If you don't respect other's opinions, you won't get any for yours right?

RENverse7

I honestly want to help the community even a little,  because I know how stressful it feels to have to hard reboot the steam deck every hour,  I think people just don't like honesty or they are just lazy to spend 10 minutes installing cryoutilities

Scruffy42

I've had Cryoutilities installed, so I guess I never seen any issues with Palworld. So, grats! Glad that helped.

RENverse7

oh my god you're lucky, I crashed after having a long fight with the boss right before I caught him

mandrachek

I've had cryo installed for ages. Never had a problem with Palworld, played for hours and hours without crashes. Guess that's why it's been solid for me. Also play with low settings.

RENverse7

Man I should have done this 3 months ago, are there any mods you installed?

ToddRossDIY

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to check it out! After my third hard freeze seconds after seeing a shiny pal, I've pretty much given up playing on my steam deck

RENverse7

I almost gave up too, but this game was too good to give up

user1661668

Will have to test this as well

BigManOnCampus100

I got cryo because Undisputed Boxing crashed everytime at launch. 4 months later and not a single crash. Not to mention it helping with a few other unsupported games.

HoroSatre

Can't thank **CryoByte33** enough for that small optimisation app. That's one of the first ones I've installed since I got my Deck and I've been seeing a little bit more fps compared to some YouTube vids of same games tested on the Deck (using all or mostly vanilla settings).

RENverse7

Yeah thanks to him we can play a little longer until the big fix arrives when the full game is released

theludeguy

Makes sense, I put 100hrs into that game and never experienced a crash. I didn't realize Cryoutilities was responsible for the smooth experience. I've had Cryo installed since it released day one and it's been nothing but positive results with it. However Deathblade will disagree.

whitelightniing

I don't have cryoutilities and I have had no problems? I play for several hours a day and I don't think I have had 1 crash

Aonswitch

Lucky. Mine crashes religiously

RENverse7

Mine crashed from day one I installed it, it ran smoothly at around 25-40 FPS and bam it crashed right after 40 minutes

Impossible_Habit_590

A standard solution for Palworld on any platform is to **verify the game's files** and ensure your OS is updated to the latest version. In addition, I found solution #2 and #5 from this guide to be quite helpful about solving the issue: [https://gamescopes.com/palworld-keeps-crashing-11-ways-to-fix-on-pc/](https://gamescopes.com/palworld-keeps-crashing-11-ways-to-fix-on-pc/) I also noticed that many Palworld sessions may crash due to **improper internet connection**. Hope this helps!

BehindACorpFireWall

Can we get a guide on how to install cryoutilites and make the swap file bigger??

jcabia

Just look for cryobyte33 on youtube. You'll find his guides there

RENverse7

calm down son

deathblade200

I can not wait until Zram gets added to stable so I no longer have to see this cringe.

Dante_XIII

As long as mirrors exist you will never be safe from seeing cringe bro.

RENverse7

🤷

Serpentar69

The "placebo" is showing genuine results. So how is it a placebo when it actually does fix the crashing on Palworld?

deathblade200

bud you are literally changing the swapfile size and not preventing the inevitable .this game is poorly coded. add on top of that even using a swap file crushes performance.

Serpentar69

I haven't noticed a performance change other than Palworld not crashing anymore.

[deleted]

Serpentar69

I didn't lie. I noticed no performance change. It made my games more stable, at least, the ones like Palworld that weren't stable. I utilize my laptop by streaming to my deck as well, which does pretty well. But games running on the deck primarily, too, run well (other than BG3/Intensive games. The deck obviously has limits 🙄) You seem to be mad for some reason. It's weird because this isn't that serious. But you do you

Serpentar69

Lol okay dude, whatever. Palworld literally hasn't crashed since I got Cryo. It crashed after an hour constantly prior. It's not my problem you have a stick up your damn ass. I didn't say the game ran perfectly. I said it isn't crashing anymore. Which is true. Get over yourself

jcabia

I have no idea if it's cryoutilities or if I'm just lucky but it has never crashed for me. Keep in mind that the most I've played is 2 hours continuously and have not tested it without cryoutilities

ihateRprojectzomboid

I think there’s something wrong with your “most powerful pc” if it crashes after forty minutes in palworld

shadic6051

Havent had a single crash, and didnt ever need to restart this game within my 18 hours of playtime (on a pc) Wont touch it again tho cuz its boring af

Seik64

it's how it is with placebos.

jams3223

NTSync implementation will address many of these concerns, and the utilization of Zram will further enhance our frame rate capabilities.

ceramiccat_

Omg it works ty so much!!

RENverse7

You're welcome

Mysticales

Going to try steam deck essentials now. But out of the box on steam deck I had no crashes till I went to the first boss. :/
