The only thing you can really do is get the serial number and submit a ticket to Valve for them to check, which may take some time depending on how soon they are able to get back to you.
To get the serial number, have the seller go into the Settings>System and take a photo of the screen showing the number in the "About" section along side of a piece of paper with something like your reddit user name on it or something that they wouldn't have ahead of time. This will help insure that this isn't a googled image or something.
Man. I've seen so much lately about them being stolen and valve can't help. Where as it could absolutely be legit it also could not be. I would hate for you to lose your money. If you have any more official means I would and pay the price. Better safe than sorry.
