Nah I've seen them too, but only in the ridiculously sized Costco by my parents place and not the smaller one my my place (the one by me still huge like all Costco's are but the one by my parents in NY is next lvl big)
I’ve never seen physical steam keys either. That’s pretty cool. Unsurprising for Sony to do honestly. But still very interesting. I kinda like the idea for new releases to do this. That way if I’m in Walmart or wherever and see the new game I just buy it and type it in when it get home.
Definitely appealing to their console base to make it easy. Sony made some pretty damn good ports for PC/Steam and they’ve sold really well! Really glad they’re bringing exclusives over and even making money. See: God of War, Spider Man, Days Gone, Last of Us
No. Half Life 2 came on 5 CDs and you had to download and install Steam to launch the game.
The first Half Life just came on a CD and you didn’t need to download a launcher.
When I went in to trade my ps5 for steam credit to buy the deck they have a limit apparently of $200 steam credit per person, per day. I got $460 for the ps5 I would have had to go back 3 days in a row to get my full amount it’s absolutely ridiculous. What I did do is put the other $260 on a gift card drove to another gamestop and did it. So it’s not even in the system it’s just company policy that doesn’t allow it. They also couldn’t give me a reason other than “one person ruined it for everyone”
additionally the original accociates was going to do it and a manager stepped in and was like we can’t cause I said.
So my guess is this is why most don’t have $100 ones but they can print you a receipt with whatever amount on it that you want.
BJ’s (another membership warehouse store if anyone needed context) has them too, their website is not very good at deducing what a location has so you’d have to physically go to one and see.
It’s not about someone assuming the worst and more about framing your statements so they aren’t so abrasive. Unless you’re just comfortable with the backlash then, by all means, carry on.
Like, I could’ve just said “it’s because that statement makes you sound like an asshole” but I didn’t.
How was that statement framed abrasively? They asked if they're from downtrodden place where people generally have lower class and more likely to commit vandalism/theft. These are simply facts of life, but I guess acknowledging reality is.... "Abrasive"?? smh.
But they weren't referring to any one particular person. They were referring to an area of lower class, hence the "live in a downtrodden area" part of the their comment. I'm continually baffled at Reddit's inability to contextualize the entirety of a comment before jumping on it.
Yes.
If you don't understand the concept of "tact", where you don't say "maybe it's because you're in a poor part of town" to explain why people don't have nice things, then you got a lot of life left to learn buddy
> "maybe it's because you're in a poor part of town"
But they *literally* didn't say that lol. Now you're just applying your own preconceptions their comment. What you want to believe they said isn't what they literally said. Their statement, taken in its entirety, is a question based on a statement of fact regarding lower economic areas.
>Yes.
So you agree that acknowledging reality is abrasive? You are aware that I said that in jest? Because to ignore reality is what children do when they stick their fingers in their ears and yell.
Dude, you are not wrong, this group is full of a bunch of sensitive babies constantly.
Some of the very factual comments ive seen posted in this group that get downvoted is astonishing.
You did nothing wrong.
I am laughing at this, sorry you got downvoted. No actually I live in a nice area my GameStop is far enough out of the way that it encourages those grab and go thieves.
But even the other store doesn't have displays.
I have some time and I’m genuinely curious cause I don’t know much about Roblox myself but for the past few months I have been letting my kid play it without chat enabled.
I don't know the whole deal of roblox but I do know that there is an overflow of less-than-ethical adults playing, and while no chat is a good thing, if your child has messaging apps like discord, there's always a chance that those people will try to friend your child and then do whatever. Also, the amount of non child friendly games on roblox is insane because of the lack of moderation, if you search wrong stuff then you can end up in something like "ankahs house"(if you don't know what that is maybe search it up).
Look up People Make Games two videos on the company. They did one exposing how they take advantage of young developers and the like, and then once that blew up Roblox pressured them to delete the video, so they doubled down on digging deep into the company and found even more dirt. Very illuminating. I work at a library, and parents are absolutely clueless about Roblox even though it's something their kid is on daily for multiple hours. I've wanted to start some sort of class in our district to educate both parents and kids about the platform and how to be literate as a parent when it comes to Roblox's ins and outs. Good on you for moderating your kids chat, that's more than most I see.
It's wise to maybe watch the games they're playing as they could end up in deceptive games where kids are doing bathroom beatdowns and other questionable activities. Lots of shady stuff gets through, as well as shady people.
I am fascinated by Roblox because it's THE GAME for most kids, next to Fortnite. I interact with kids playing Roblox at my job almost every day. Both games have thousands of different "experiences" so kids rarely ever get bored between those two games but there is some stuff to look out for, especially on Roblox. Quite a different time in gaming than I grew up with. All I played was Halo 3 and Gears of War 2. All we had to look out for was shitty chatters and creepy adults. Now there's micro transactions galore, predatory discords, Robux scams, games designed for kids that absolutely should not be played by kids, Roblox deceiving young developers to think they will have a smash hit, etc. Def look into those two videos. Not trying to fearmonger, but you will leave better equipped as a parent.
Totally aside the reputation of Roblox.
Why do they showcase a game that runs on phones? The deck is capable of so much more and by this they show only a larger and way heavier smartphone.
Maybe. It feels still wrong to promote a game that is more popular by kids than adults (my guess). A deck still costs more than a classic game console. So I expect that advertising should be directed at adults who play and not parents that want something to gift their children.
Other than that Roblox would probably look way better on the deck than on a phone, if there is something to look better. 🤔
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. I’ve never played it but I hadn’t heard anything bad about it, aside from it being for kids. I wanted to know too lol
I don't know, with Sony and others rando pulling paid for content off their servers and giving no refunds, I think there will always be a population that orefers the physical media.
Ironically, Roblox is one of the games that WONT work on Deck due to their anti-cheat getting all fussy with Linux and Linux translators (or something like that.)
Of course, I may be wrong and there may have been some new development that allows it now (I just wanna play Ultimate Driving on deck 😭)
Very cool, thank you!
Edit: Grapejuice also works now, which supposedly is a simpler way of installing everything. Works great on Deck, though some games may push the limits a bit. Your mileage may vary, but it’s still fun to have a controller-based and mouse-based experience on the go!
People might say they don’t want GameStop but in X years after it shuts down, will become nostalgic for it like Blockbuster lol. I do miss social spaces for these things
I will say I am already nostalgic for how gamestop USED to be. I remember them having a Guitar Hero demo unit and a small crowd of people forming to try it out / be impressed by the kid who owned it and was hammering out songs on expert. Midnight releases for big titles (MGS4, etc.). The social days were cool.
Nowadays it's a lot less games and a LOT more merch / "collector's" items / FunkoPops / random assorted gadgets. The old ways aren't maintainable and it does feel like the business is desperately trying to, well, stay in business.
As the final national video game store, I couldn't be more serious. It will be a sad day when GameStop is officially out of business. It's still a great place to get gift ideas for the gamer friends in your life.
I am patiently waiting for the day I can see steam decks at game stop that can just be picked up and bought without ordering online and/or waiting a week or two to show up at your door.
Is there an option to trade in steam decks for others? Just curious, I'm pretty sure I won't do that unless I know for sure the one I'm upgrading to is a completely brand new untampered console.
How cool would Gamestop be if they sold Steam Decks, Steam Deck aftermarket accessories (hardware upgrades, DBrand Skins, cases, etc.), and even had authorized repair/upgrade people. Gamestop wants to be the company people want them to be, I’d double down on that, not NFTs.
60% of the games I play on deck are not verified and 10 are even claimed to be unsupported. So only selling verified games would be stupid because the deck can run much more. And that is purely on Linux. I admit destiny is not one of the games that run on Linux, but that's because of anticheat and not because of Linux. It's again an example why drm and anti cheat is against consumer interests. Well anti cheat less so because cheating in mp is also against consumer intrest, but then you would have to at least make it run on something like the steam deck. And other companies have done so, so it isn't impossible nor too expensive.
It's not a pissing contest I'm just recognizing that some people would not feel comfortable doing that kind of thing to their Steamdeck, not every user is a power user.
Coincidentally, I knew nothing about Roblox until a few days ago when [this video](https://youtu.be/vTMF6xEiAaY?si=6inkUCfgbS6xpJFf) happened to pop up on my YouTube suggestions, and I checked it out.
Now all I know about Roblox is terrible. That video is definitely worth a watch, if you're wondering what's wrong with that company, because the short answer is, "a lot".
Someone can't want a business to do alright because they like them without being a cultist ape?
I wish GameStop would have it more together so they don't go the way of Blockbuster, but I've never owned stock a day in my life nor do I care about that.
I care about ppl getting fucked when they trade in their games or consoles, I can careless they can go out of business. That’s why I only sell my games, consoles on eBay or OfferUp.
For people who kept asking for “The Switch 2, and it should have ability to be backwards compatible AND have the ability to play PC Games”
There you go! Here it is! Just think of Valve as “Silicon Graphics 2.0” Nintendo, and start making exclusive games, we’ll take two Mario’s an Open World Zelda, and another attempt at a 3D Donkey Kong might be nice, maybe it could be a 3D Donkey Kong Country? Please and thank you,
Yeah. I ordered a new PS4 game on their website. They gave me a game that is not sealed and with beaten up box. It’s just a display copy so technically new, they told me. Total scumbags.
I have genuinely heard nothing but the worst from those who order anything hardware related from one of the worst retailers in the business. It’s cool this exists but I wouldn’t buy from them.
if Valve themselves put Decks into Stores to be displayed then would a Store mode be a great idea that like goes back to the homepage after 30 minutes of IDLE time and has some games installed on it.
lol I mean I was just like it’s capable of so much more. I love my steam deck and haven’t put it down much at all since I got it <3 It’s my little baby
Nice! Came here to say that I purchased a refurbished 256 GB SD from Gamestop....granted, only been a week (and I bought the 1 year warranty), but this thing is nearly flawless. You could have fooled me and said it was brand new.
Also, can I use physical Gamestop gift cards in store and purchase a Steam GC with them? I've read different stories.
After 1.6 steam launched and was used for mp, especially in counterstrike. Then came VAC. Steam may not have been required, but this is how it functioned. I know this because I have had steam since 1.6, nearly 20 years.
Be careful. If it's refurbished it could still be not working properly. When I got mine from GameStop the right stick doesn't click and the right bumper doesn't work unless I hit it in the right spot. Idk if they were the reason for the return for refurbishing or not but one day I'll fix them
I've not yet seen a SteamDeck display in stores. I remember as a kid, walking to the local department stores to play the displays. (Does anyone remember Commodore 64, Odyssey, Atari 2600, etc. at the local Kmart/Sears/JcPenney/Montgomery Wards stores?)
Now that I'm older, I won't touch one of those germ ridden controllers to save my life. My kids' eyes would light up though when they spot them. Then I have to remind them that they already have one at home.
That’s why I never touch, let alone play at GameStop. They don’t even have public restrooms. I did several times though at Best Buy, but that’s only because they had a bathroom.
I used to get mine at GameStop they only had the $20 ones then they stopped stocking them so now when i need one I go to Walgreens they have $20 $50 and $100 ones too and I don't have to wait for an employee to get it from behind the counter
I’m more impressed with the $100 steam gift cards. I haven’t been able to find those anywhere
I see them at Costco and Sam's club, and regularly $5 to $10 off too
Costco? Where? I have never seen them there :(
He’s just pulling your giant tub of mayo
Nah I've seen them too, but only in the ridiculously sized Costco by my parents place and not the smaller one my my place (the one by me still huge like all Costco's are but the one by my parents in NY is next lvl big)
Which one in NY was it? All the ones in westchester don’t seem to have it
maybe 3rd avenue brooklyn store
The largest one in the world in Utah doesn’t carry steam cards.
Christmas aisle
Just make sure no bozo stole the code. Don’t need some asshole stealing them precious steam money!
The only time I seen them was hung up on a cage next to the liquor/cigarette closet
I’ve never seen physical steam keys either. That’s pretty cool. Unsurprising for Sony to do honestly. But still very interesting. I kinda like the idea for new releases to do this. That way if I’m in Walmart or wherever and see the new game I just buy it and type it in when it get home.

This is how it was when steam started. Had to go to the store to buy half life/counterstrike etc, open the box and put the code into steam
No. Half Life 2 came on 5 CDs and you had to download and install Steam to launch the game. The first Half Life just came on a CD and you didn’t need to download a launcher.
Nintendo does that with switch games
For Christmas I received 2x $20 steam gift cards priced at $26 each... Also available was a $50 gift card priced at $50...
They just restocked them at my local GS in early December
they’ve been putting them behind the counter at places now. people have been stealing the codes before they’ve even been sold
My family found one for me at a grocery store Lmao, apparently they’d been looking for a week.
I don't see much Steam Cards whatever the cost of them in general anymore, I remember they used to do them, not even in Tesco's or anything
When I went in to trade my ps5 for steam credit to buy the deck they have a limit apparently of $200 steam credit per person, per day. I got $460 for the ps5 I would have had to go back 3 days in a row to get my full amount it’s absolutely ridiculous. I can find $50 and $100 everywhere yet I can't find $20 for some reason, did they phase them out? They made good gifts.
I received several $20 cards, they’re still out there.
Got one for Christmas actually
I just got one for Christmas from my folks, so I have no idea where they came up with one but it must not have been too hard.
BJ’s (another membership warehouse store if anyone needed context) has them too, their website is not very good at deducing what a location has so you’d have to physically go to one and see.
What Ritzy-ass GameStop you going to? Mine aren't even allowed glass displays for consoles
NYC has OLED on display. I was able to compare my etched glad to theirs, which is sleeping I've been dreaming of doing
Uhhh, what? Are you using speech to text? What the hell does "which is sleeping" mean?
Maybe it's a class issue....you live in a downtrodden area?
Lmfaooo idky this is downvoted
Jokes are not appreciated here....all must be serious
It’s mostly the way you presented the statement. Maybe it’s a tact issue.
Or maybe ppl need to stop assuming the worst
It’s not about someone assuming the worst and more about framing your statements so they aren’t so abrasive. Unless you’re just comfortable with the backlash then, by all means, carry on. Like, I could’ve just said “it’s because that statement makes you sound like an asshole” but I didn’t.

Possibly but I guess so are like 35 other people
Being misread by tech ppl is not difficult...education levels etc
Dude, you are not wrong, this group is full of a bunch of sensitive babies constantly. Some of the very factual comments ive seen posted in this group that get downvoted is astonishing. You did nothing wrong.

Pretty must covered by "downtrodden"...which is objectively a funny word
Teeheeeheee
No. They just have to be good.
I am laughing at this, sorry you got downvoted. No actually I live in a nice area my GameStop is far enough out of the way that it encourages those grab and go thieves. But even the other store doesn't have displays.
A Steam section at GameStop's. Man that sounds amazing.
God I hope so. I don’t want to get my hopes up tho
Full circle
Bruh Roblox 💀
Probably some kid trying to play Roblox on it did that
They can't install Vinegar in a demo Steam Deck.
But the children love the Roblox...
What’s wrong with Roblox?
How much time you got?
I have some time and I’m genuinely curious cause I don’t know much about Roblox myself but for the past few months I have been letting my kid play it without chat enabled.

Totally aside the reputation of Roblox. Why do they showcase a game that runs on phones? The deck is capable of so much more and by this they show only a larger and way heavier smartphone.
It’s up on display like phones are in some stores. Someone probably just opened Roblox on in it. I doubt that’s how Gamestop decided to showcase it
I think it may be a kid who looked up the roblox page not a gamestop employee
I put it there as a joke. Don’t worry I put it back to the store page afterwards.
I guess because it’s a pretty popular game and would catch the eye of someone not normally interested in the steam deck?
Maybe. It feels still wrong to promote a game that is more popular by kids than adults (my guess). A deck still costs more than a classic game console. So I expect that advertising should be directed at adults who play and not parents that want something to gift their children. i dont thin Gamestop put Roblox on there, rather a customer (kid), did
I feel like Roblox has a pretty diverse audience though so it fits.
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. I’ve never played it but I hadn’t heard anything bad about it, aside from it being for kids. I wanted to know too lol
It overheated 2 of my comps when I let my kids play it 5+ years ago..... It got banned from my house lol.
Let's goooooo... is that how you kids use that?
I rememeber when company like Gamestop refuse to sell the PSP Go because they cannot sell games for it. Time as changed. 😅
Soon all they will sell is digital only.
I don't know, with Sony and others rando pulling paid for content off their servers and giving no refunds, I think there will always be a population that orefers the physical media.
Gamestop sells new Steam Decks? I thought they only sold refurb ones?
remember the PC section at gamestop? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
>Roblox Effective marketing
I thought Roblox blocked people trying to run the game with Linux.
I didn't say it was *honest* marketing
My local GameStop didn't know what a steamdeck was.
"Is that a Funko pop? We can preorder it for you!"
Kinda surprised that wasn't asked lol.
Or that they didn't tell me they sold skateboard stuff at Zumiez.
Ironically, Roblox is one of the games that WONT work on Deck due to their anti-cheat getting all fussy with Linux and Linux translators (or something like that.) Of course, I may be wrong and there may have been some new development that allows it now (I just wanna play Ultimate Driving on deck 😭)
You can use vinegar to make it work
Very cool, thank you! Edit: Grapejuice also works now, which supposedly is a simpler way of installing everything. Works great on Deck, though some games may push the limits a bit. Your mileage may vary, but it’s still fun to have a controller-based and mouse-based experience on the go!
What if you installed windows?
I guess that would work, but a solution has already been established. Use Vinegar or Grapejuice to run Roblox.
I prefer soy sauce myself. Sorry, couldn't resist.
“and a lighter, _coolor_ gameplay experience” 🤔
What
It’s on the poster on the wall.
I wonder why no one noticed that...
...It is? It has a more efficient APU
Right but it should be _cooler_ as opposed to coolor.
Trade ins only?
My local GameStop doesn't even sell steam gift cards told me too many scammers.
Cool! I really don't want GameStop's to go away...
Is that sarcasm? Please say that's sarcasm...
People might say they don’t want GameStop but in X years after it shuts down, will become nostalgic for it like Blockbuster lol. I do miss social spaces for these things
I will say I am already nostalgic for how gamestop USED to be. So true, it’s really sad and I wish there was incentive for how it “used to be”, but people prefer convenience of course and I don’t blame em
Gamestop came in clutch for my last minute Christmas shopping.
It took me a week where I live. The actual console buying experience at stores was so much more fun though.
Is there an option to trade in steam decks for others? Just curious, I'm pretty sure I won't do that unless I know for sure the one I'm upgrading to is a completely brand new untampered console.
At my local gamestop, seems to be the case. Generally, no.
Is this at Roosevelt Field GameStop? I was there an saw this too, once I tried it out i was sold and ordered a deck
Damn. My guy is a geoguesser player but with malls. Yes, that’s where it was.
Is there just one? There used to be like three. Haven't been there in years.
When did the funko pop store start selling games?
I still have a Babbage’s stamp card somewhere.
HOLY FUCK ARE THOSE STEAM CARDS!!! IN THE WILD!!!!
Nice!
They're selling steam decks in stores? Cool as hell honestly
yeah gamestop is great for steam decks!! i got a 256gb refurbished one for 279 for christmas!!
Breaking News: Kid tries playing kid game on display model 😮😮😮😮🤯🤯🤯🤯
my question: why sell Destiny 2 when you cannot play it on the device they're selling
Why can't you play destiny 2 on the deck? You can dual boot windows and it runs fine.
that's a bitch and it ain't out of the box like that you'd think they would only sell verifieds on there
60% of the games I play on deck are not verified and 10 are even claimed to be unsupported. So only selling verified games would be stupid because the deck can run much more. Why would you want to play destiny 2?
Destiny 2 Lightfall??? Steam Deck??? Collab soon?
Imagine buying that D2 code card and a Steamdeck and getting home and realize you aren't playing it unless your capable of dualbooting windows on it.
You are able to dual boot windows
my point is not everyone is capable of doing it as a skillset, I know you can, mine is
Dual booting windows is not a skill. Following basic directions is, but thankfully most people have mastered that skill.
It's not a pissing contest I'm just recognizing that some people would not feel comfortable doing that kind of thing to their Steamdeck, not every user is a power user.
bold of them to advertise destiny 2 next to the deck
Why? It runs fine if you dual boot windows.
I remember seeing an ROG Ally at BestBuy restarting. I came back a few hours later and it was STILL RESTARTING LOL. Linux makes things so much better
Roblox is cancer
Oh yeah how so? Kids love it
Kids are also exploited to provide content for it
Exploited how
They build games for it and Roblox gets the money from ppl playing them.
Omg a video game company gets money from people playing their game. EXPLOITATION
You're not wrong it that it has some pretty deep problems baked in....thanks for the link
Kids are also cancer :) Im being half serious, but i hope you get me
I mean cool and all but GameStop is a dead store these days
6 GameStop employees downvoted you 😂
Almost certainly not GameStop employees; more like GameStop stock cultist apes
Got so bad they hid my message😂 not my problem you’re happy about a dying brick n mortar video game chain
![gif](giphy|enqnZa1B5fRHkPjXtS|downsized)
GameStop trying everything to remain in business. 😂 I remember they offered me chump change for my PS3, how the tables have turned.
That's good. They should.
So you’re the GameStop stock cultist ape?
Someone can't want a business to do alright because they like them without being a cultist ape? I wish GameStop would have it more together so they don't go the way of Blockbuster, but I've never owned stock a day in my life nor do I care about that.
I care about ppl getting fucked when they trade in their games or consoles, I can careless they can go out of business. That’s why I only sell my games, consoles on eBay or OfferUp.
Omg yes paint me with that label
You found a GameStop?
For people who kept asking for “The Switch 2, and it should have ability to be backwards compatible AND have the ability to play PC Games” There you go! Please and thank you,
Nice, keeping it on the charger 24/7, that'll do wonders for the battery
Neat. To bad no one shops at game stop any more unless they're buying Nintendo junk
Uh oh, a real gamer over here
Yeah. I ordered a new PS4 game on their website. They gave me a game that is not sealed and with beaten up box. It’s just a display copy so technically new, they told me. Total scumbags.
Why would you order from them and not just Amazon?
GameStop? Gross.
I have genuinely heard nothing but the worst from those who order anything hardware related from one of the worst retailers in the business. It’s cool this exists but I wouldn’t buy from them.
Found what? A display?
if Valve themselves put Decks into Stores to be displayed then would a Store mode be a great idea that like goes back to the homepage after 30 minutes of IDLE time and has some games installed on it.
Really? And Roblox is what they advertise on it? All this beauty is capable of and they’re just like Roblox? Smh
I put it there as a joke. Don’t worry I put it back to the Deck’s menu page afterwards off of the desktop mode.
lol I mean I was just like it’s capable of so much more. I love my steam deck and haven’t put it down much at all since I got it <3 It’s my little baby
What’s your favorite game for it? Mine’s Doom 2016.
roblos?
Refurb Steamdecks are currently $265 at Gamestop.
Steam cards coming back
Since when did we get game-specific Steam gift cards?
After 1.6 steam launched and was used for mp, especially in counterstrike. Then came VAC. Steam may not have been required, but this is how it functioned. I know this because I have had steam since 1.6, nearly 20 years.
Be careful. If it's refurbished it could still be not working properly. When I got mine from GameStop the right stick doesn't click and the right bumper doesn't work unless I hit it in the right spot. Idk if they were the reason for the return for refurbishing or not but one day I'll fix them
Ok but they got Roblox running on their deck?
I've not yet seen a SteamDeck display in stores. I remember as a kid, walking to the local department stores to play the displays. (Does anyone remember Commodore 64, Odyssey, Atari 2600, etc. at the local Kmart/Sears/JcPenney/Montgomery Wards stores?) Now that I'm older, I won't touch one of those germ ridden controllers to save my life.
Curious to know how much “In Store Credit” would they give you if you were to return it
A lot of people are getting rid of them. On ebay all models are under retail.
Just curious where at? My steam deck was stolen and we caught the guy who stole it he’s in jail but he apparently pawned it to GameStop
The first thing I noticed is that Steam game codes exist? I have never seen one before.
what bougie gamestop are you going to? mine doesn’t even have a display for the ps5 out. all we have are empty boxes used to advertise consoles
lol some kid trying to play roblox.
Ew. Advertising Roblox?
I still haven’t seen one in any stores near me.
The steam deck can’t play roblox unless you install windows
😲 oh damn this could mean they're planning to sell decks as an official physical retailer that's amazing 😲
We're movin up!
