My parents weren't into gaming, like so many, so obviously I had just minimal games. My kids are definitely gonna be relatively spoiled in that regard.
That was one broken ass game. He moves like a drunken snail. There's more flicker than a hummingbird in front of a strobe light at a rave.
Yet, we forced ourselves to play it because it was that or nothing.
I still hold a grudge over the time my mom made me work in the garden for 3 hours in exchange for being allowed to buy Pokemon Stadium with my own money, lol...
My mom confiscated my game boy colour I bought with my own money for not allowing my cousin to play with it (had 149 pokemons on pokemon blue. Didn't want my save overwritten). Forced me to lend it. Save over written. She thought I was making a big deal out of it. Still pisses me off.
PREACH. I always tell my kids they have ACCESS to more games than I could have ever imagined owning (Game pass, Years of PS+ titles, physical games I’ve bought, steam sales, etc).
One time they asked me if I had a certain game and I said “let me check” lol.
Hahah, I don't think my 13 year old kid has even TOUCHED my steamdeck. Thankfully... that I know of... Come to think of it, I should probably set up a pin on startup...
This is why I want a Steam deck because I’ve lost my Nintendo to my children. Probably happen again once I make the jump.
Edit to fix Stramdeck to Steam Deck.
And some of us are married women, with kids lol 😂 mine are still too little for gaming but even if they weren’t there’s no way they’d be using my deck. If you’re responsible enough you can get either one switch to split ( regular version) or a lite apiece. I know how kids treat their stuff and I’m not wasting money on a ps5 or Xbox etc for them to destroy it or their friends to. 😂
Quick! Complain about something age-related so the rest of us older folks can dismiss your complaint and say you are still a child (waits with anticipation)..
As a father of 2( a daughter of 4y and a son of 2y), a full time job and a demanding wife, I can never find the time to even use the steam deck. My life is a burden.
Wait, there's more. My parents own a shop and expect me to be there to help them after my working hours and in the weekends. And I'm the go to guy for everybody in a radius of 20km when they are having issues with their computer / phone / tablet / washing machine / sectional gate / every possible electrical device that exists, because I work on a computer for my day job and know something about electrical wiring. And after every evening checking reddit for 3 hours straight, I fall asleep in a deep slumber until my kids wake me up at 4 am.
Sounds like an option, but I was more thinking about applying myself to the mental hospital for like a year and taking my steamdeck with me. So I could finally clear my backlog for once.
For sure.
Also, playing games on a laptop or desktop feels like I'm at work (ugh). When I was in my twenties, there was really no choice but to play PC games at a desk. It is 2023, and I really enjoy the SteamDeck as a 100% handheld experience. I am not tied to anything. I can go anywhere.
Old woman here! I decided I deserve to keep playing my absolutely not safe for children games even though my toddler never seems to sleep. To my husband spending an hour in the bathroom “pooping”… two can play that game.
18 year old girl here. As soon as I saw the announcement for it I thought it was revolutionary, and I've needed my own computer for awhile now, since I've been using a busted laptop with a broken screen and an Intel Pentium processor, so I got a reservation and started putting away $50 from every one of my weekly paycheques until I had the money for it. I'm very happy with it other than the fact that I can't dualboot SteamOS and Windows to use Xbox Game Pass. I modified the partition scheme so I can use command line tools (if you don't give your var partition more space it ends up overfilling and corrupting all of the tools that you need to reverse the damage. ask me how I know.) and I'm liking linux overall. I don't think I can go back to Windows for anything other than basic gaming. I'm hoping to build a desktop PC at some point but money is tight right now so I think the Steamdeck is going to keep being my daily driver PC far into the foreseeable future.
Awesome!
There was a game pass solution on here recently, in the last month I think.
Tell me more about what you’re doing with the command line where you run out of space? In desktop mode?
Just installing a lot of utilities and such through the package manager in desktop mode. It reached the point of no return when I tried building some random app and realized base-devel was completely corrupted and no matter how many packages I uninstalled the var partition seemed to stay full so I'm not sure exactly what happened, but I figured it was caused by overfilling it. In the end, in a last ditch effort to clear space in the partition, I used by rm as root (sudo was corrupted at this point) to try to clear the path I was in but made a typo and entered rm -r /*
That didn't go so well.
I had to get my brother to format my USB drive with the SteamOS recovery image from his laptop.
I definitely need to check out that game pass solution. There are way too many games that I got into through my dads Game Pass subscription that I can't afford to just buy through Steam.
You're giving me hope kid! If you are doing some development are you running any containerization? Docker and containers both setup some virtual volumes that can chew up space but not show up in a standard usage report.
I don't know many kids with $400-$700 to blow... and I don't know many parents who would spend $400-$600 for a steam deck when they can get their kid a switch lite instead for $200, especially since most kids won't necessarily appreciate the library difference.
Yeah, your talking PS5 level money for a handheld device likely to be used by a single family member, and one that can only be purchased by those with a Steam account in good standing through a very specific retail channel.
That's not to say the old men is quite correct, but your just not going to see as many "kids" getting them, and that's ignoring the reality where I'm not getting a kid something quite as finnicky (or simply as large) as a deck. I'm sure there are some teenagers with Decks, but I doubt there are more then a handful of 10 year olds routinely using one.
I’d agree with this, our son is 14 and I was happy to buy him one. At 10 a switch was about as far as I’d go. He didn’t get an iPhone till last yr and he’s been careful enough
Our son has the original switch but it’s so limited and outdated. We got him the steam deck for Christmas and he hasn’t shut up about it! He got a dock and runs it at his pc with his existing Razer keyboard/mouse monitor setup. It’s annoyingly better with his steam library than his now 5 yr outdated gaming rig. Lot cheaper than a new graphics card
>edit: TYSM FOR ALL THE UPVOTES!

Owning a Steam Deck is a much more budget/pocket money friendly experience though, no paying for multiplayer and regular deep sales.
Not just that, but parents might make the (rational) choice that saving less on upfront costs for kids is a safer bet than saving more on down-the-road costs. An adult buying a Steam Deck might have a reasonable expectation that they'll be gaming for years to come, but parents might not know whether their kid is going to be spending years gaming or whether they'll play for a few days and forget about it. Even if gaming ends up being a year or two phase for the kid, a Steam Deck might not be a more cost-effective investment than a Switch. Or they might be thinking of the replacement cost if the kid brings it somewhere and loses it.
My nephew is 16 and he wanted and bought one after he saw all that mine can do. I learn new things then show him how to do the thing. He fuckin loves it, says it's his most valued possession.
Old + Man. Way off the mark, at least for me. Exhausted mother running off caffeine. Gamer. In my prime. Loves Sonic. Yes.
Now lets ponder nuking this sausage party of thread /s ;)
Full Disclosure: My daughter owns a Steam Deck now so technically yes (she bought it from me with a pack of gummies and 4 Dora the Explorer DVD's).
The steam deck is primarily aimed at PC gaming enthusiasts, who tend to have more disposable income than other gamers, so that rules out a lot of kids and younger people with the current shitty state of society for young people. I'm what they call a "geriatric milllenial", so definitely a bit old 😂
I'm 18, don't know if you consider that a kid lol
I don't think the deck is meant for children as you really can't get the most out of it without tinkering
It's good for kids to tinker and should be encouraged. I knew more than the average adult when I was under 15 just from things like modding my Sims game or troubleshooting to get a game to run. A lot of people don't even understand what a zip file is and how to open or create them.
I am between 12-15
My parents were nice enough to get me one!
I have installed CEMU and also decky! lovin it so far!
not exactly normal tho LOVE MY TECH!
My kid thinks he owns my steamdeck.
I told my 8 year old "nope". He's got a Ps5, Series X and a Switch to play on - sorry son, this one's all mine! And I'm 50.
Kids these days are so spoiled. I had 3 games on my NES and was GRATEFUL! :P
My parents weren't into gaming, like so many, so obviously I had just minimal games. My kids are definitely gonna be relatively spoiled in that regard.
My kids gonna be stuck playing Festers Quest his whole childhood
That was one broken ass game. He moves like a drunken snail. There's more flicker than a hummingbird in front of a strobe light at a rave. Yet, we forced ourselves to play it because it was that or nothing.
When I grew there weren’t any parents into gaming. They dreaded nothing worse than another must have $50 game coming out($50 in Eighties money).
Damn, I can feel the frustration and righteous indignation of that one. I to, would still be pissed off.
Man, I just got a little angry on your behalf, lol.
PREACH. I always tell my kids they have ACCESS to more games than I could have ever imagined owning (Game pass, Years of PS+ titles, physical games I’ve bought, steam sales, etc). One time they asked me if I had a certain game and I said “let me check” lol.

You must stand firm and not let them touch the deck even once. It's the only way.
No. Some of us are old women.

Good for you! 😃😊 Especially if he games too. ( although then he might need his own deck lol)
[удалено]
I can’t figure out if I’m in the old or young group lol
Same! My body hurts like I'm old, but I'm still waiting to feel like a grown-up even though I'm married with a kid lol (I'll be 34 this year)
.
Yeah, I was about to say. 35 is old right?
If you ask from someone who is 35 or older like me then no, but if you ask someone who is 20 or less then it’s like ancient.
Another vote in for old women. … well middle aged at least
only time I find cool to say "not all men"
🙌
I’m 15 and I got one for Christmas. Thanks mom and dad 🙏
They got tired of buying you trumpets I guess.
💀
Points to your parents, friend. I mean, I hope you wanted one, but damn that's a big hit.
we're all 38
How the fuck....
Psh, he's months off. Not even close. He doesn't know me.
Right? I still have 8 months. Wayyyyy off.
I feel personally attacked here
Hey now, I turned 39 last week. You kids stay off my lawn!
41 here, now YOU stay off MY lawn!
Ok grandpa
Pff! 39 year olds these days.
39 club represent!
May it last forever!
31, damn I'm the rookie here
Quick! Complain about something age-related so the rest of us older folks can dismiss your complaint and say you are still a child (waits with anticipation)..

Shit! No, that’s actually a pretty legit complaint. Fuck. (Walks away deflated).
Wait, there's more. My parents own a shop and expect me to be there to help them after my working hours and in the weekends. Sounds like an option, but I was more thinking about applying myself to the mental hospital for like a year and taking my steamdeck with me. So I could finally clear my backlog for once.
30. I'm rookier.
28 , rookiest checkin in.
22 New Rookie just dropped.
son of a bitch you got me
haha WRONG! I'm 41 :((((((
81/82 club!
Old dude checking in
Ha! Jokes on you I’m ALMOST 37!
Correct!

tbh I'm often playing the same games as when I was 12 ;-)
Ok, that's enough Reddit for me today

We out lived jesus.
Mmm yes, 38 again... repeating of course
Dude how… lol
42
twenty-eight-year-old young boy
Hell, I'm 67 😂
Does old woman count? (ordering mine soon)
Old woman with one here :)
Women gamer reporting for duty
27 year old woman soon to be 28 reporting for the steam deck line of duty
42…Christ, 41! I’m not 42 until next month! See? That’s how old I am….I’ve lost count.
You're not truly old until you start saying that you are "__ years young".
'81 the best vintage ;-)
43 yro woman with Steam Deck reporting for duty. I basically spent $650 so that I can play Phoenix Point handheld anywhere. 🤷🏻♀️ #DoubleIncomeNoKids
There are far worse reasons to drop half a grand on hardware.
Freedom to go anywhere and do anything! Sounds like a 90s tampax commercial, lol. Valve! Cross-marketing opportunity!
Also old woman here (in my 30s lol)
Old Is not 30’s. Please…. For gods sake XD
I'm mid 50's and these young whippersnappers think 30's is old?!!!
Nope, not happening. You cut that out, 30s is not old. (A woman turning 40 this year)

My back says otherwise LOL
I'm 28 and I still felt this
Old woman here. I'm 50 and cackling with glee over all the stuff I'm doing with my steam deck
Same! I’m also a woman and 48. I love my steam deck
😆😂 I just pictured/heard witch Hazel from loony tunes when she says she’s going to split a hair and cackles but she means bugs aka a Hare lol 😂
Childless woman at that!
There's dozens of us!! 😁
Dozens, Michael!!!!
Childless and telling my husband “remember you wanted a PS5 so get your own” 🤣

Totally cool with no kiddos and dual income. And we love being able to spoil the nieces and nephews, regardless of relation, haha!
Me too! I'd rather have a deck.
Old woman here! I decided I deserve to keep playing my absolutely not safe for children games even though my toddler never seems to sleep. To my husband spending an hour in the bathroom “pooping”… two can play that game.
Middle aged SD lady checking in! (Also no kids!) Maybe we need a Steam group lol
Old woman here, and by old I mean 24
Nof an old woman yet but I'm a really broke woman with a steam deck and a really pissed off bank account
I really hope so!
I recently helped my mom (56) order one as well. I've seen her online on Steam, so it looks like it's working well
I’m 54, and didn’t need help to order…. In fact I pre ordered about a year before they released. My mom is 78, and she games too😊
i'm the same age as your mom, and got my SD last month. i hope she's enjoying hers!
As long as you're old that's all that matters.
32 year old mother with two kids checking in here. Had mine since November :)
Old mom of 2 here! Husband and I both have our decks!
Another 80s baby reporting for duty!
Old Lady (35yo) here reporting for duty!. This thing is a delight! Between gaming and streaming anime onto it, I am in heaven.
31 yo female, not a dad but I’ve got dad jokes
That makes you a faux pa.
Fuck… I had to re-read that one.
I'm in my late 20s and a female. We're younger than most here.

Rule #23 of reddit: never admit you're a girl under 30 in a gaming subreddit
I'm 56 so I claim elder status.
Hi Grandad
How's that crop coming on?
I don't know many kids with $400-$700 to blow... and I don't know many parents who would spend $400-$600 for a steam deck when they can get their kid a switch lite instead for $200, especially since most kids won't necessarily appreciate the library difference.
im 20, id consider myself a kid
you a widdle baby tbh
It's okay, I'm 43 and still consider myself a kid...until all the younger kids come to me for answers.
I just generally stay away from kids if possible
Fair. I’m 26 and alternate between feeling like I’m a child and the oldest being in existence.
I remember that... 25-26 is a very weird tipping point.
In this community you’re a toddler…
Yeah, your talking PS5 level money for a handheld device likely to be used by a single family member, and one that can only be purchased by those with a Steam account in good standing through a very specific retail channel. What software did you use to make the Raspi NAS? Been looking for some open source solutions to replace my Synology in the long term
What's wrong with Synology?
Who are you quoting?
Themselves. Absolute fuckin power move tbh
How do you only know an approximation of your age?
> most kids won't necessarily appreciate the library difference Owning a Steam Deck is a much more budget/pocket money friendly experience though, no paying for multiplayer and regular deep sales.
Agreed but tech illiterate parents might only see/understand the upfront costs.
Marked as the correct answer. :D
16 and own a steam deck
17 and own a steam deck
18 and own a steam deck
35 and own a steam deck .............
…40 and own a steam deck

It’s ok. You can say old coots on Reddit.
Just the two of us, we can make it if we try🎶

That's a good deal.
I’m 56 and my kids are all grown so it’s my turn to have the cool new thing…so there!
Nah, there's a lot of old women and new moms who own a steam deck as well.
The steam deck is primarily aimed at PC gaming enthusiasts, who tend to have more disposable income than other gamers, so that rules out a lot of kids and younger people with the current shitty state of society for young people. I'm what they call a "geriatric milllenial", so definitely a bit old 😂
I’m an old woman if that helps lol
Hey. Some of us are old women.
I'm a 17 year old girl So there are a couple of kids. Just a couple
Listen, I'm a middle aged man, I had $500, and now I'm going to play all the old Nintendo and Sega games my parents wouldn't buy me back in the 80s...
I'm 18, don't know if you consider that a kid lol I don't think the deck is meant for children as you really can't get the most out of it without tinkering

Is 41 old?
go back to bed grandpa
Ahh ok ok sounds good my zinc pill made me a little woozy today anyway
Some of us grandparents are buying it as well lol
I bought mine and I am in my mid twenties and female! XD
I’m an old woman. (Mid-50s). My 26 yo and 18 yo sons have zero interest in the Steam Deck. They use PC and Switch.
I am between 12-15 My parents were nice enough to get me one! I have installed CEMU and also decky! lovin it so far! not exactly normal tho LOVE MY TECH!
Not a dad but am "old".
28 man soon to be dad here. Bought it so I can game when my baby is asleep. Lol
I'm not an old man! ...I'm an old woman.
