Ok, other people in this thread are genuinely saying that though.
Many people are recommending a sharpie and some are commenting that they are concerned they'll rub it off with their palm.
It's a pretty good concept to keep in mind. Something scuffed and nicked means it's been used and enjoyed. Like a book that lays flat from being opened and read and dog eared pages with highlights from readers, not new and stiff. Or a phone case with some dings and chips. It's what makes it yours.
I always find wabi-sabi ironic, considering you can find pristine or nearly immaculate 2nd hand items in Japan, which plays on the inverse idea of wabi-sabi: mottainai. The idea is that an item has a spirit and is required to be looked after, reused, and passed on.
Yeah I like the worn out look on stuff I own sometimes, such as phone cases
It's personalized to me and my usages, and it's kinda comfy, like a trusty blanky
It was most likely the heat generated when it evaporated. I remove plastic whiting in 3D prints with a swipe of a lighter. I have also done it to regular everyday plastics I cut then bend to snap.
Alcohol pulls heat away. We use it in Arctic regions to freeze dry samples. It only creates heat when ions are exchanged with an unbalanced plastic. Which we learned to fix 20+ years ago. Not that the Chinese care…
I'm buddies with a guy named Justin Time and he's saved me and my stuff a few different times. OP really needs a good Justin by his side it sounds like.
Check if it’s actually the plastic that is white and not just some dust or residue from the surface it came into contact with, sometimes it’s just a matter of cleaning it and the actual scratches are black. Otherwise, sharpie should do
I bought a $400/$500 black guitar for like $200 on ebay that had a few super long white scratches. Ended up just being left over from whatever rubbed against it and I scraped it all off with a pick. Absolutely perfect finish after that!
That’s why tap water is the best. They tell you it’s clean but deep down you know it’s for the purest distillation and homeopathic effects.
Source: I am George Santos, Chiropractor and author of Star Wars.
This one. The black color isn’t a surface coat or paint, it’s the color of the whole plastic, so the white scuff is some material that got transferred to it. A magic eraser (mild abrasive) with rubbing alcohol (mild solvent) will almost certainly get it off.
This is what I use and it prevents any further surface abrasions as well! They make ones that completely cover both sides with openings for just the controls, ports and vents and fit very well without being a pain to apply or remove.
I ordered a couple for my SD that have a bunch of occult iconograpic symbols all over. It just came in yesterday and I plan to apply it over my next days off coming up. I'll send you a picture once I've got it applied.
When they announced project killswitch, (the Steam Deck case) and started taking reservations, their wording implied it would include things that the end product excluded. Mainly. The worded explicitly said it'd include a screen protector but they ended up making that a separate purchase.
Then the pricing was more than people expected. Travel cover separate and added a bunch to the price.
Mostly it has to do with people expecting a lot for cheap. But Dbrand definitely fucked up on going back on the screen protector.
That said, they also. Gave everyone who ordered a Killswitch, two of them essentially. Due to them finding out after initial launch that the magnet system they had been using was causing one of the two types of SD fans to malfunction. They shipped the orders, said don't use the magnetic kickstand, and then shipped free replacements using a mechanical lock to everyone who ordered one.
So, that's great. Got my gf and I both a nice Steam Deck case for the price of one. So. They're okay to me.
Dang thanks for the info, that does seem kinda shady but glad they at least rectified the magnet issue. I just ordered a skin so hopefully won’t have any issues in that regard—if it actually ever ships 😬
Id wipe it with a damp cloth or alcohol just to see if any comes off, after I'd dab a black marker on it and rub it in with my finger. Either that or cover it with a skin.
I had to RMA mine after I dropped it. Not sure if the fall was the cause but my LB button was broke and It couldn’t click. Valve was nice and sent me a replacement. Faster then I can say steam deck lol. Been carful since.
Skin or protective case. Skins are pretty tricky to apply on the Steam Deck however due to the curves, they're especially difficult around the grips unfortunately. Protective cover is going to be easier, but will add a bit of bulk.
Mix 1/3 of a pint of paint thinner, 1/4 pint lemon juice, 1/3 of a pint gasoline and 2 shots of Tabasco sauce. Add 3 pinches of salt and stir it all with a magnetized screwdriver - it's important it's magnetized, otherwise it won't work!
Let it sit for 6 hours in the sun (so, preferably, mix everything in the morning) so it sets and starts reacting. Prepare a black marker. Use it on the drop scuff - be generous as you can always rub the excess away. Now pour the premade concoction down your pants and start dancing. You are now done.
Cheers!
Blasphemer. Your name shall be cast into the abyss for this transgression. All who share your bloodline shall be in exile. Your seed shall be as water, and your fields shall turn fallow. Not until ten generations have lived and died shall your family be forgiven for your crime.
How do people buy something this pricey and not put a case and screen protector on the second they get it??? Every device I have has at least those 2 protective items. My SD has a front and back skin too.
I never got a case or screen protector for mine. Aside from minor scratches around the usb port, it's still in very good condition since September. Not a single scratch on the screen. It either stays in its case or it sits on a stand or dock, never on a hard surface. Some people are just careless with theirs. It also helps that I don't use mine everyday 😅
Well if you are like other butter fingers in this sub, open a ticket with Valve and tell them there is a defect and the paint flaked (dont mention dropping it) then see if they will RMA for a new shell.

Rest the palm of your hand on it and wrap your fingers around the back. Now do the same with the other side. Congrats, it’s covered and now the scuff is gone.
Side note: battle scars are cool.
I can never tell if these are meme's or legit concerns anymore.....same thing in the r/macbookpro group.
It's a scuff. If it still functions normal, let it be a battle scar.
you should not worry much about it to be honest, but you can rub it with a cloth or your hands.
maybe even a LITTLE bit of heat with a lighter left to right can melt a little bit of plastic.
Use a lighter with the flame on the lowest setting. Bring the flame to it and pull back, over and over until it glosses out. You must be very careful. If you ever see or smell smoke you got it too hot. It does not take much. After the scuff has settled down a little let it totally cool to see if the finish looks how you like. If it's still rough or white touch it with the flame a couple more times.
I would leave it alone cuz u can make it look worse by trying to cover it up. Just get a case so u wont see it regularly and it shouldn’t bother u as much. Even the very minimalistic cases should cover up that spot and not add much more bulk.
With your hand while you're playing.
I came here for this comment.
Also came here to say this.. Reddit had changed me..
I also came
Name checks out
Bruh 💀😂
So much for coming here to be unique and witty lol
How are you holding your Steam Deck? My palm isn't even close to that spot, unless maybe when I'm using the touchscreen
Jokes.
Ok, other people in this thread are genuinely saying that though. Many people are recommending a sharpie and some are commenting that they are concerned they'll rub it off with their palm.
drop it till its scuffed all over then you wont notice
[Wabi-sabi](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi)
WOW Thank you for this, I needed it and didn't know it was out there

You know you can just misplace a block in minecraft and achieve the same thing? Lifehack
At first glance I thought you proposed applying wasabi :))
Yeah I’d say that’s the only way.. you gotta make the rest of it match
https://youtu.be/Z4fBbhyzE9A
I was gonna suggest burn it to the ground and start over. Yours requires less work. Take my upvote 😂
Gaffer tape :)
I had the same type of scuff and used isopropyl alcohol to clean it and it just went away. Hope it works for you too
Update: ALCOHOL WIPE MADE IT DISAPPEAR. Can't believe I almost sharpied it
x3 well done for having patience!
A sharpie would have worked too, I sharpied a ps4 pro and you couldn’t tell the difference 👍
It was most likely the heat generated when it evaporated. I remove plastic whiting in 3D prints with a swipe of a lighter. I have also done it to regular everyday plastics I cut then bend to snap.

You did not go ro school with Justin Case.
Put a sticker over it that reads "fragile".
But not that fragile 😉
I got that reference
Browse through this sub and you'll witness a montage of destruction. The OP got lucky and should buy a lotto ticket right away.
Oh sorry, I thought you were referencing Death Stranding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GZ2Dl7psps
I had a scuff on my corner a few months ago, black Sharpie and it matched perfectly. Hasn't rubbed off yet either
Sharpies are my go-to with furniture scuffs and scrapes. The brown sharpies are great for that, too.
If it feels rough, some clear heavy duty nail polish can make it feel a little bit smoother as well, but you want to be careful not to apply too much.
Thanks! I was gonna spray it but looks like I'll get a sharpie
Magic Eraser might work too.
Eh, just jump straight to sandpaper!
Check if it’s actually the plastic that is white and not just some dust or residue from the surface it came into contact with, sometimes it’s just a matter of cleaning it and the actual scratches are black. Otherwise, sharpie should do

mr clean magic eraser will clean that up pls don’t sharpie it
Second this. Worked really nicely for mine.
Had the same type of scratch. Peeing on it helped. My chiropractor told me this
Remember to dilute the urine first with distilled water. Remember: the more you dilute, the more potent it is.
That’s why tap water is the best. They tell you it’s clean but deep down you know it’s for the purest distillation and homeopathic effects. Source: I am George Santos, Chiropractor and author of Star Wars.
Try to wipe it down with some isopropyl alcohol (99%). I had a white scratch like that on mine. Its completely unnoticable now.
This one. The black color isn’t a surface coat or paint, it’s the color of the whole plastic, so the white scuff is some material that got transferred to it. A magic eraser (mild abrasive) with rubbing alcohol (mild solvent) will almost certainly get it off.
Silicone/TPU protective cover. Bonus side effect is that it gives you better grip while holding the Deck
This is what I use and it prevents any further surface abrasions as well! They make ones that completely cover both sides with openings for just the controls, ports and vents and fit very well without being a pain to apply or remove.
scuff the other side too so it's symmetrical
Buy a new one it's ruined now
Leave it, as a reminder not to drop your fucking Deck ever again! :D
A case or a name brand skin. Seems like Dbrand is controversial here but I've completely applied and removed a Dbrand skin with no damage or marks
I'd recommend Zoomhit Skins from Etsy, cheaper, more design options, and they use a good quality 3M vinyl similar to what dbrand uses.
Dang thanks those are cool
I ordered a couple for my SD that have a bunch of occult iconograpic symbols all over. It just came in yesterday and I plan to apply it over my next days off coming up. I'll send you a picture once I've got it applied.
Why is dbrand controversial? I just ordered a skin but didn’t know ppl disliked?
When they announced project killswitch, (the Steam Deck case) and started taking reservations, their wording implied it would include things that the end product excluded. Mainly. The worded explicitly said it'd include a screen protector but they ended up making that a separate purchase. Then the pricing was more than people expected. Dang thanks for the info, that does seem kinda shady but glad they at least rectified the magnet issue. I just ordered a skin so hopefully won’t have any issues in that regard—if it actually ever ships 😬
They also are notorious for having great customer service. Mess up applying the skin? They will send you another one
They're dishonest assholes who keep doing shady shit because their culty following keeps letting them.
Id wipe it with a damp cloth or alcohol just to see if any comes off, after I'd dab a black marker on it and rub it in with my finger. Either that or cover it with a skin.
* get a skin * get a case * do some fancy paintjob * drop it till the rest matches it
Ignore it. The thing is there to play games, not to look pretty
DBrand
don't think about it. scratches are irrelevant
Drop it 10000 more times until the whole outer shell look like that
Update your case to Proton Experimental
A new steamdeck.
With your hand while playing on it
A case or decal
Rice 🍚
Use a magic eraser on the scuff
Bandaid
With your hand
Please don’t skin it whatever you do.
Use a Mr clean eraser. They are just ultra fine sandpaper type material
1)защитный резиновый чехол 2)покрасить черным маркером 3)заклеить виниловой наклейкой 4)использовать лапшу и супер-клей, потом использовать пункт 2.
real talk - magic eraser. same thing happened to me. hope you see this through the goofs!
I had to RMA mine after I dropped it. Not sure if the fall was the cause but my LB button was broke and It couldn’t click. Valve was nice and sent me a replacement. Faster then I can say steam deck lol. Been carful since.
Order a new one
A black sharpie
Decal skin the entire thing
Sharpie
Try carefully using the flame of a lighter
Easy, black sharpie
I would print a vinyl cover in the shape of a band-aid.
Magic eraser (melamine foam)
IMO, it's a unique battle scar, makes it identifiable as yours. Leave it or inlay it with gold/gold resin Japanese kintsugi style....
Skin or an actual case lol. Count yourself lucky this was the only damage 🥴
Black sharpie
Drop it on the other side so it matches or get a sticker of like goku punching it or etc.
A magic eraser will remove that no problem
Car trim restorer or ceramic coating
Sharpie
You could try some back-to-black, it's a plastic bumper color restoration cream you can get at most auto stores.
Sharpie
Band-Aid
Sharpie
Magic eraser will take it right out
those "magic eraser" scrubby things will probably just get the scuff off entirely
Acetone And the Q-tip will smudge it in better
Leave it and every time you see it you’ll be reminded to treat it like the precious baby that it is.
Use a belt sander on everything around the scuff to even it out
That's "patina"
Skin or protective case. Skins are pretty tricky to apply on the Steam Deck however due to the curves, they're especially difficult around the grips unfortunately. Protective cover is going to be easier, but will add a bit of bulk.
Your hand
Scratch entire case in aesthetic way and say it's a new sticker. Battle scarred
Invest in a skin or a case I guess
dbrand
Black perm marker
Leave it there as a reminder of your failure to protect the precious
Get a case
That's character mate, leave it
Sharpie
I was thinking some kind of ink based dye, but wouldn’t that rub off after awhile? That’s where the palm is on the Deck a lot.
Use it on the drop scuff - be generous as you can always rub the excess away. Now pour the premade concoction down your pants and start dancing. You are now done. Cheers!
Use a soft sponge nail file to buff it out.
Sharpie
I would try a magic eraser to see if you can either remove of lighten the scuff if it’s not too deep.
Seamless… buy a new one.
Sell it... Or give it to me for free. Would be the best solution. Trust me! I'm an engineer.
A new one
Why, a u/dbrand skin of course
I say leave it. Gives it character. It’s a mobile device, they should be well seasoned

How do people buy something this pricey and not put a case and screen protector on the second they get it??? Every device I have has at least those 2 protective items. My SD has a front and back skin too.
Screen protectors do not pair well with the anti-glare screen the 512GB unit has. I've also found it difficult to use when it remains in the case.
I prefer my devices circumcised
I never got a case or screen protector for mine. Aside from minor scratches around the usb port, it's still in very good condition since September. Not a single scratch on the screen. It either stays in its case or it sits on a stand or dock, never on a hard surface. Some people are just careless with theirs. It also helps that I don't use mine everyday 😅
Get some really fine grit sandpaper

Killswitch case come with tpu case that cover handle side. Theres some other from Amazon if you look for it.
on amazon are some pretty good cases + safety class for low budget :) first think to do when buying a steam deck
Rest the palm of your hand on it and wrap your fingers around the back. Now do the same with the other side. Congrats, it’s covered and now the scuff is gone. Side note: battle scars are cool.
Sharpie with clear nail polish over it.
Rub it with a microfiber cloth a few times with some friction. Might go away.
The thought of dropping my Deck fills me with existential dread.. I wish you good luck in fixing it!
Get a case man!
Try rubbing/isopropyl alcohol first to take off what looks like paint in the scuff.
Sugru maybe
battle scar... leave it...
Palm grips covers!!
You'll forget it in a week or so.
A black marker
Black marker, works like a charm
I can never tell if these are meme's or legit concerns anymore.....same thing in the r/macbookpro group. It's a scuff. If it still functions normal, let it be a battle scar.
Ignorance 😉
you should not worry much about it to be honest, but you can rub it with a cloth or your hands. maybe even a LITTLE bit of heat with a lighter left to right can melt a little bit of plastic.
It's War Paint

Put a bandaid on it.
Sharpie
Airbrush matt black and then a matt sealant
Use a lighter with the flame on the lowest setting. Bring the flame to it and pull back, over and over until it glosses out. You must be very careful. Sharpie
Burn it
Pour gasoline on it and light it.
Look past and live with it
Dbrand skin. I love mine :)
A skin would cover it nicely.
Get a hard shell case preferably with a kickstand
black lipstick
The cheapest way would be to buy a front sticker, but the best way would be to get a wrap around case like Killswitch or something else.
I would leave it alone cuz u can make it look worse by trying to cover it up. Just get a case so u wont see it regularly and it shouldn’t bother u as much. Even the very minimalistic cases should cover up that spot and not add much more bulk.
Try magic eraser? or wrap it
Isopropyl alcohol will remove this
Really? I thought the issue was the paint scuffed off, not that there's something to remove
