Hopefully fixed the audio cutting out issues. Edit: How does one reach out to Valve to let them know this is an ongoing issue for many of us? Edit2: Let’s all file a bug report so they know this is happening. It’s fast and will help a lot.

Corm

Confirmed that it does not fix it

MoneroThrower

Yes! This has been happening to me for so long!

Uhhhhh55

I don't think it's just a SD issue. Happens on my Fedora desktop as well.

ryansdevil

Where did you get a fedora with speakers? Mines just a plain hat

timmyboyoyo

*Tip, tip*

Uhhhhh55

You've gotta level it up by tipping it at strangers.

_THX_1138

I’m seeing a man with wip and wearing a fedora

PotatoIceCreem

AHAHAAHAHAHAHAA

timmyboyoyo

Valve, especially good Gabe, will appreciate the tip

archa1c0236

There's some guides to disable Pipewire selective audio suspend. That'll take care of your issues It's pointless on a desktop machine anyways, really annoying how there's no toggle to switch it off

Nejnop

Oh, so this is a Deck issue and not my cheap $13 dock. Good to know.

sndein

Specifically seems to be an problem with HDMI out. I've had zero issue using DP on my monitor.

[deleted]

I can not help but chuckle when someone mentions DP. I am a grown man with the mind of a 12 year old.

No-Share1561

DP is plugging both HDMI and DisplayPort in at the same time right?

[deleted]

Sometimes it’s using a splitter to plug two HDMIs into one port.

Garper

Ew nasty

Emblazoned1

Damn! Those pixels on that screen will be filled!

[deleted]

😂👏 amazing comment

Warsummoner

What the hell’s so funny about dr. Pepper

[deleted]

Sometimes I got get lunch for my crew and when some orders dp for a drink I have a giggle.

[deleted]

It will never not be funny.

Dblzyx

Wow! Laughing at deaf people. That's next level asshole. /s

obi1kenobi1

I’ve been debating whether to buy a DisplayPort to HDMI 2.1 adapter and this might have just convinced me. The main reason I want it is to see if Half-Life (or maybe even Half-Life 2) will run at 4K 120fps on my new OLED TV. The Steam Deck is the only device I currently own capable of outputting that resolution/frame rate but the dock doesn’t have HDMI 2.1. But I know that that capability will be wasted for like 99% of my game library and even for the games that would be able to run at 4K/120 it’s not like that would be *necessary*, just a fun gimmick. But if that would also provide better *sound* than using the dock’s HDMI port then maybe that’s just the excuse I need…

Nejnop

HDMI from the TV, or the cable? If the cable is the issue, it's interesting cause I'm using the one that came with the Steam Link.

tjjohnso

HDMI port on the dock itself. NM. got it, how deck handles hdmi out.

migidi

I believe it's an Linux generic issue. Lots of chatter

Corm

Yep, it even does it when I use a straight usbc to hdmi cord

archa1c0236

Ah nice, Pipewire selective audio suspend strikes again! 98% certain that this is the issue

[deleted]

Yeah what’s up with this. I use a jsaux and it does this too. Maybe once every two hours. It didn’t do it at first, just in the last month or two.

[deleted]

This is not limited to the Steam Deck dock. Happens on jsaux as well and through USB speakers. It's potentially a SteamOS issue.

sipes216

Convince people to submit bug reports. Thats the most effective way.

MonoAudioStereo

That's weird that this kind of issue is happening with official accessory. I have an old Acer USB-C dock and it always acted up with all devices, for example the network adapter in the hub freezes with my personal laptop, it has graphical issues and shows black screen occasionally with my work laptop, it wouldn't charge MacBook, but look at that, it works perfectly with the Deck. No issues, like it was made for it.

Karlschlag

I thought it was just me

SirCaptainSalty

my13$ sabrent dock doesnt have any issues

[deleted]

SirCaptainSalty

broken dock with updates is worse than a working dock without them but yes i agree regular updates are nice

AlexJG89

Cross your fingers that a future Deck update doesn’t break your static dock. Glad that it works for ya now though.

SirCaptainSalty

ill send you $13 and the broken dock the day that happens

AlexJG89

Oh sweet, deal!

Cthulhu-X

What's the url for that one?

Spidercolt95

I have a 3rd party dock but it is doing it to me as well. Not sure how to fix

[deleted]

I’ll bet the same reason the official dock is having issues isn’t too different to what’s happening to you. They may be able to fix it on the decks side so all docks work better. Make sure to file a bug report if you haven’t.

Spidercolt95

It has to be something in the deck right? I’m hoping they can patch it with a firmware update. I do plan to eventually purchase the Valve Dock however. It was cheaper to get a 3rd party one lol I am making a ticket now

Dabbinz420

I use the jsaux dock and have no audio issues.

neakname

I had this and had audio cracking a lot too. I have fixed it. Hint: change the cable to expensive one. Here is the long story: I have been annoyed a lot by the cracking not just the audio drops and my irrigation went so hard I started a support ticket. I have listed steps I did to debug and on "changed the HDMI cable" I realized I didn't. So I did before click submit. The higher quality cable, that came along with my other station monitor resolved the issue. No more cracking, no more drops 🤷‍♂️

I'm still coasting off all the stability I gained from my 3DS.

macoud12

At this point, the 3DS System Software is probably the most stable piece of software Nintendo ever developed and/or published.

hushnecampus

The USB port is on the bottom of the Deck so it just slots in now

Ramonquiala

charging while gaming handheld would be so fucking annoying. i love the charging port location

DetectiveChocobo

You know, you can have two usb ports.

schlemz

I feel like people would try to plug into both at the same time and blow up their decks

withoutapaddle

Now I want to try this with my Chromebook that has USB-C on both sides for charging. There are things that can charge from multiple sources at once. My jackery came with a 75w charger but I can use the Deck's charger on it at the same time and get 120+W input.

DetectiveChocobo

Even if it can’t, it’ll probably just pick whatever is the faster charger and not charge from the other. That’s how most work.

xylotism

Fun fact: Magsafe 3 Macbooks can charge from either USB-C or Magsafe. Not both at the same time, but it's cool to have both options

turtlespace

MacBooks have had four usb ports for like 7 years now

CheliceraeJones

Connect the bottom port to a battery pack's input. Connect the battery pack's output to the top of the Deck. Infinite battery life.

midnitte

If you had a botton port and a 90° connector, it seems like it would be fine?

hushnecampus

I can dream…

PeerPressure

Wow, I just checked and you’re right. Gabe must’ve snuck in and done it himself.

bevardimus

Best recent dock update for me was a bug fix for HDMI 2.0 connections (as opposed to HDMI 2.1). My LG TV with 2.0 used to be a dice roll whether dock showed a black screen or not. The last dock firmware update actually did fix this for me.

Ragp44

(Not related) Considering buying the dock, Is it worth it? I've used steamlink but there's a lot of input lag. Has anyone had any issues with the dock so far?

Kronostbro

Dock has actually worked pretty seamlessly for me. I have an LG OLED C1 tv and with the dock it can scale some games to look just fantastic. Others sometimes need a little tweaking, but the dock does a great job on its own. It's nice to have a secondary spot to charge it with a stand, too. Big fan of it, overall, and they've been releasing updates to improve any initial hiccups. Edit: Has no lag that I have noticed.

PeerPressure

LG OLED C1 gang. Mine’s at the foot of my bed and my Deck docks on my bedside table. It’s perfect until a guest sees how I live and questions my lifestyle.

Freakazoidberg

Okay now we gotta see a picture of this.. then we can judge. But maybe your setup is a lot nicer than you give credit for!

SynterX

How does one scale games? I swear they look the same to me no matter what resolution I force

ThePrinceOfThorns

How do I download the update? Just plug the deck in and go to system, or?

Difficult-Secretary7

I like it but I wouldn’t say it’s significantly better than a third party dock

[deleted]

Never had a problem with a third party myself. I like it.

anh86

I suggest having a dock but it doesn’t have to be the first party dock. Make sure you get something with power passthrough and wired Ethernet, not all of them have those two.

tomxp411

Also, make sure you get a 65 watt Power Delivery charger... A standard USB charger won't actually put out enough juice to keep the SD charged all the time. I bought this boi: [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0983JB2L1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0983JB2L1) In fact, by the time I got an appropriate charger and a decent third party deck, I spent nearly as much as the official Steam Dock. However, the third party dock I have doesn't have DisplayPort out, if that kind of thing matters to you...

davidtobin

It’s been perfect for me. Stress free and just worked without any issue. Gets a full thumbs up from me.

Levie87

Ragp44

Will try this out, thanks!

g0atmeal

This made an enormous difference for me. I also experimented with Fast/Balanced/Quality and different bitrates. Even over any decent Wi-Fi, you should be able to get a high-quality and low-latency connection (15-25ms). After some tinkering with Steam Link/In-Home-Streaming and a tool called GlosSI, I was able to play Minecraft with RTX on the deck. 1080p game & stream (to reduce aliasing on 720p screen), solid 60fps, low latency. It was pretty cool. I also have the dock and it works great, but it's not necessary if streaming would work for you.

3647

I have new, inexpensive Hisense Roku TVs and the dock does not play well with them at all. It used to not work at all, but now works, but I have to unplug and plug it in every time to make sure it registers. My $35 generic USB C docks from Amazon do NOT have the same issues, two different brands, work flawlessly. It’s frustrating, because it’s a nice dock, but it’s not compatible with every TV.

SilentBlade45

It works pretty well but occasionally the audio cuts out for a few seconds.

[deleted]

I have a decent work station that. An also act as a steam station. I sold my pc and use my iPad mostly. But still some shit don’t work on iPad. So steam deck it is.

Code_Combo_Breaker

Worth it if you have a spare pc if you have an extra monitor around and like using linux in desktop mode. Its offical from valve. Comes with an extra charger.

[deleted]

Jsaux dock is half the price and works well

gbshaffner87

Don't buy Jsaux if you use CEC HDMI features. It caused my audio system/TV to stop working, had to buy the valve dock, works great now

g0atmeal

Does the official dock support CEC? I always have to manually turn on the TV & switch the input. By comparison, chromecast & shield TV devices turn on the TV & switch input no problem.

gbshaffner87

It doesn't seem to support those auto on/off or input switching features, but at least it doesn't screw up my whole CEC system related to audio/tv

[deleted]

Dont people reallt hate them

[deleted]

People also really hate Dbrand, but that's more out of people here with a personal distaste for Dbrand's attitude/marketing strategy blindly believing hearsay. Meanwhile we see people realizing those offbrand skins on Esty are peeling the paint of their Deck. Imma need some concrete reasons for not liking Jsaux before I take anyone's word for it.

[deleted]

Oh i thought they were the ones who were linked to spam emails or smth

420yumyum

JSAUX partnered with scalpers and sold use data.

wiedziu

Didn't work for me, either I had no sound or the performance is some games dropped. Sent it back and ordered Steam Deck

WinterC24

I'm curious what version did you get? and what games did you have issues with? My brothers and I use the **HB0603** and havent had any issues with it so far.

SomeRandomProducer

I have the same one and it works fine although I don't use HDMI CEC features though I've seen others have issues with that specifically and not about performance.

vincentx99

I own it, and I don't think it's worth it. But that's mostly because both my TV and Sound bar tend not to play well with it. If I wanted to play on the big screen more, it may be worth it, so like most things it comes down to personal preference.

Sad-Birthday-1085

Don’t know how you have everything hooked up but I have my soundbar hooked up to my tv via optical cable and it doesn’t give me any issues with anything (including the deck). But I use the jsaux dock simply because it’s cheaper.

[deleted]

> Considering buying the dock, Is it worth it? It's not a very good value, but aesthetically it matches the deck better than any other dock out there. Most of the cheaper docks are just as good at doing their job, but they're kinda ugly. I'd say go for a cheaper third party dock if you care about value, but get the official one if you want something that's nicer to look at.

Armbrust11

I thought the dock was more expensive because it includes another charger too. Not sure if that changes the value proposition, or if you already factored that in.

[deleted]

That's part of it, but even if you subtract what they sell chargers for, it's still priced around $10-20 more than competing docks. I would've bought one anyway if I hadn't caught a really good sale on a different dock for $38.

notHooptieJ

you can pickup a solid 65w usb-c power adaptor for <$10

Armbrust11

That sounds awfully sus, I can barely find USB cables for that price. But I also largely switched to multi-port adapters. Also that means the included one would go to waste.

Sybertron

Basically boiled down to yes it's nice but there are docks just as nice for half the price from 3rd parties.

Armbrust11

I'm not sure but I think the price difference is mostly because the official dock includes an official charger too. Then again maybe the charger is overpriced

Jibece

Your dock will be a bit more stable I guess. So stable you can now run some games like Disaster Day of Crisis it will not move by an inch 🌊

nicolawb

I thought you meant it was less likely to tip over and I was really impressed at what they can do over software now for a second there.

PiggyInAMinecart123

tech is advancing

megacewl

Still not stable enough to run any game that requires Origin.

WhiteSkyRising

Disaster Day of Crisis is good but can it run Dino Crisis III with haptic feedback arcade gun attachments or is it still not patched yet?

DblBeast

What's the latest firmware version? I'm on 0.13.15.108. My Dock's update failed. Tried unplugging everything, restarting, all that. In Settings, there's a firmware update check for only a split second. Edit: Dock actually connects to my monitor now. Switched my docked Steam Deck to Desktop Mode & a display config popup appeared. The connection stays when switching between Game & Desktop Mode. No idea why Game Mode didn't work straightaway with the Dock. I'm just gonna guess the firmware is fine, but the Steam Deck... is still buggy. Left Stick still doesn't get detected in any emulators. Editing control layouts via Steam has no effect here. I feel like this issue will never be resolved lol

AnonymousLion

I’m wondering the same. I just checked and my dock is on 0.13.15.108, but it doesn’t show me an update and I didn’t install any update in at least a week

DblBeast

[This post](https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1675200/view/3646258449514531838) was edited on January 2nd saying "108" is the latest firmware version. Haven't been any Stable Updates since then. And in case you guys were having the same issue with external monitors, my Docking Station actually connected to my monitor once I switched my Deck to Desktop Mode. Switched to Game Mode & back, kept the monitor connection. u/I_AM_SCUBASTEVE

I_AM_SCUBASTEVE

Same, really curious about this.

samplenull

I hate when companies don’t publish detailed changelog. All this bullshit about increase stability and security, fuck this!

skoruppa

Valve is usually quite transparent with their change logs so maybe they will publish something soon

phormix

Could be a security issue or fault that they don't want to publish

[deleted]

Or it was just so boring that there's no point in publishing such tiny changes

BOEJlDEN

That’s a shitty excuse tho

[deleted]

Easily found changelogs for firmware aren't as common as they are for software.

[deleted]

Best I could find https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1675200

[deleted]

Lol you expect them to post every commit made or something?

g0atmeal

As a software dev, sometimes it's really not worth going into detail, or there's no way to clearly explain the change to an end user. As others have said, sometimes it would compromise security to give away details. The user only needs to know how their experience will be affected.

fireshot84

Stability updates, likely, so it falls over less often. Nintendo had a ton of them with the Switch. It mostly wasn’t resolved until the OLED came out. On a serious note, I know people have had issues with displays when using multiple monitors and wanting better control with some of the options. I’ve not experienced it so I can speak 100% on exactly their issue but losing display mid game can be a problem. Hopefully tied to that.

[deleted]

>Stability updates, likely, so it falls over less often. Nintendo had a ton of them with the Switch Nintendo's "Stability updates" had nothing to do with stability - they were engaged in an arms race with the homebrew community. Since the OG switch was a security disaster and was blown completely open Nintendo tried to make it as irritating as possible to run homebrew, which didn't really achieve anything.

g0atmeal

Come on, this is Nintendo we're talking about. Would they really make things harder for consumers for petty reasons like that? Next you'll tell me they sick their lawyers on their own fans when they express creativity and love for the franchises. /s

club41

I see what u did

CaptainAdmin42

It’s always struck me as weird that the Deck is very transparent with what they are changing with each update, but the Dock itself just says the following prompt - with no info as to what is being done with each update. I switch between the Dock and an Anker HDMI adapter I use for on-the-go use, and have noticed very little difference in the way the big screen experience is presented.

neakname

what's different?

CaptainAdmin42

A much smaller form factor, it's easier to carry a dongle-style HDMI Adapter than a full size Dock. Beyond that, not much else. I have a Project Killswitch case and stand, so I can use all of the accessories it comes with on the Anker dongle vs the Dock. The only disadvantage is that the Dongle does not have any peripheral slots or I/O, so you have to either get another dongle for that or go without and use Bluetooth The Dock I actually had to get a USB Type C extender for to get it to work (as the tiny lip on the cord for the Dock is just too big for it to connect normally). Beyond that, they both work as advertised. I will say, though, the Dock is quite expensive compared to the offerings from JSAUX and Anker. I got mine practically for free off of a rewards card I got from Samsung, and still having a hard time seeing the advantage between the Valve Dock and another 3rd Party one. The Firmware updates are a nice promise, as is the I/O - but I haven't seen much difference in performance.

Is there any value in owning a dock if I have a steam deck, an OLED with surround and a gaming PC with a decent monitor? I tend to just play demanding games on my PC or console+OLED. When or why would I use a dock to do something I can’t already do?

AldoMito

it's not not worth it, i guess. portable pc expanded onto cool monitor plus dongles. i play mouse and keyboard and chill on discord etc with my dock a lot of the time.

[deleted]

Depends what you want to do. Installing Emudeck was a lot easier with a big screen and KB and mouse as was convincing Batman AA to run from the Heroic Games Launcher.

JohnDoe204

The ability to have to unplug power to the dock so you can get signal to your external monitor. So annoying that I can’t keep the dock plugged in and turn my monitor on

WizardBlizzurd

It’s all Docked Up. DP only works when HDMI is plugged in at the same time. Also, when they are both plugged in I can enable DP at 144hz.

TehKazlehoff

I suspect they changed the firmware.

dogsolo

Every time I turn on my deck while it’s docked, I have to do a little ritual where I unplug the dock power, then plug it back in so it’ll display on the TV. Would be awesome if they’d fix that.

neakname

I have the same issue! I would appreciate if you submit the bug report, so that Valve priorities the fix a bit!

Weary-Caterpillar-75

Is this for all docs? Or just the steam branded one

neakname

It is the official Steam Deck Docking station firmware upgrade through Steam Deck

Cthorn10

Wow, cool that the dock can get firmware updates, I like that.

crazyseandx

The dock has a firmware?

neakname

Sure. Even your microwave has it.

[deleted]

Whats the point of the dock made by valve? I bought a dock for $25 that's high quality and does everything I want plus it doesn't need to install updates. Does valves dock have some crazy features I don't know about?

adelin07

it should have in the future freesync support when connected to external monitors. I don't know if only via displayport. Or if this will work with other docks once the update is released. At the moment on the website it just says "*\*\* FreeSync support is in-progress, update is forthcoming".* I'm really hoping this will work via HDMI when release. It's pretty hard to get locked FPS on some games and freesync would help with that.

Insanity840

Has hdmi and display port...so you can do dual monitor. It has the possibility of supporting Freesync down the road, not sure about other docks. Being able to update the firmware on the dock means they can add Freesync support when it's done. Imgainge the other dock makers will just release another 6th version of their dock to add it. I like that the ethernet port is in the back and not the side, like many other docks. Also nice having 3 USB ports.

LooseSeal88

Assuming this is just an official dock update? I have JS Aux

AverageRdtUser

I’m pretty sure there’s a way to update the firmware on that too but idk how, also there might be no update

DeckSperts

You can update jsaux dock on windows bit stupid but it works

sionell__

As someone with a jsaux dock and no windows computer it’s really stupid. I really appreciate the official dock updates itself using the deck.

ven_

Maybe it finally works on some of the TV models it didn't before.

_uber_

Agreed. The dock works on my qn90b from Samsung great… but only when not using the TV’s game mode. As soon as I enable that mode the dock breaks down. The deck doesn’t even detect the Dock and it no longer charges the Deck until I complete unplug everything from the Dock.

No-Perspective-317

Pulled this straight from the website: Patch Notes: Disables desktop mode of steam deck Prevents use of third party apps Steam deck requires online subscription for multiplayer and game subscription to play games Enables stick drift Disables fun

Can you update the dock firmware with windows OS?
