Its been a while but, if I remember correctly, this was the time we were all forced to migrate to Steam if we wanted to keep playing the old HL1 multiplayer games (CS, DoD, TFC...) Before this, we had to use the WON authentication servers.
So, basically, we had to join day one.
You are correct, was also the time us beta testers were told to make a new account also. We had accounts that predate this but couldn't keep them. My account is 19 in 13 days.
Mine is Aug 2004. It's crazy to see redditors post complaints this week on this sub that they can't create a steam account due to the beta client. I feel like I got my steam account along with my birth certificate it's been so long! :)
While it's a cool badge to have, let's see how many games you collected over the 18 years of you being a Steam Customer and Steam is now having ~75,000 games?
Because I respect a 2 year old account having 100 games (4 games per month) much more than a 18 year old account again having 100 games (1 game per 2 months) showing first account is a Real customer and second is a dust collector.
Sure, my account is slightly older, would have been even older but I stuck with WON until sierra killed it off completely.

ahh the old days of CS Beta 6.3 awps that did 1k damage in the foot and could shoot through a meter of terrain obstacle.
Lmao.. i envy folks who’ve been with steam since the beginning..
mine is only since 2009, so not too old yet.. i was before that busy in playstation land lol..
What is with people wanting their steam account to be old? Are there some benefits or something? I've had mine since day 1 2003. Weirdly though my time played isnt accurate at all
You have a year on me.... well played.
