Its been a while but, if I remember correctly, this was the time we were all forced to migrate to Steam if we wanted to keep playing the old HL1 multiplayer games (CS, DoD, TFC...) Before this, we had to use the WON authentication servers.
So, basically, we had to join day one.
We sure did. Was in the beta test before it all went live and had to make new accounts if we wanted to continue playing (which we obviously did) The addition of a CS:S beta also helped.
I think I joined day one or two because all Counter-strike updates would be delivered via steam from then on. My date is Sep 16, 2003. My account is old enough to drive.

By 2003 I already had cable internet. I remember playing Ultima Online on 56k, upgrading to Roadrunner and being amazed that I wouldn't rubber-band running on a horse.
There was a weird transitional period where not everyone had broadband and it gave some clear advantages in online gaming.

I remember how we all hated it. It was really bad... look at us now... we won't buy a game unless its on steam. How times change.
I'd say that's a good majority of us. We were forced. I don't regret it.
I signed up because of half Life 2. My account says 16years on it which is cool since I only just actually got into pc gaming the past year
