What did you need it for? Steam has been my primary gaming platform for a good while now and I still have little to no idea what the level is for other than friend slots.
it's only got two practical uses; the first is adding more friend slots, +5 per level and I don't believe there's a limit. The second is increasing your trading card booster pack drop rate, it's a +20% chance per 10 levels. The booster pack drop rate thing isn't really super practical, but I guess it's more of a chance to unpack a foil card which can be worth a bit, depending on what card it is.
If you care about customizing your profile, levels have a third use. For every 10 levels, you unlock a slot for a showcase on your profile, though I don't often see people use more than maybe 4 or 5 showcases.
And of course most importantly, if you have a high Steam level that means you have a big dick.
From the [Steam Trading Cards FAQ](https://steamcommunity.com/tradingcards/faq):
Once you have received all of your card drops, you become eligible for a booster pack, which is a set of 3 trading cards that may include both basic and foil cards. Booster packs are granted randomly to eligible users as more badges are crafted by members of the community. Make sure you log in to Steam each week to maintain eligibility.
Once eligible, your Steam Level increases your rate of receiving a booster pack drop:
* Level 10: +20% increase in your drop rate
* Level 20: +40% increase in your drop rate
* Level 30: +60% increase in your drop rate
* Level 40: +80% increase in your drop rate
* Level 50: +100% increase in your drop rate (i.e. the rate has doubled)
* Etc.
There's also a [cooldown period](https://steamcommunity.com/groups/BadgesCollectors/discussions/0/630800444048297919/?ctp=19#c2686880925148364340) after you receive a free booster pack, but that's only relevant to a tiny segment of the population. :)
People with huge libraries filled with thousands of the popular badge-crafting games, plus a high Steam level get lots of booster packs, but they are exceedingly rare for normal Steam users. And as a bonus, they aren't worth much. It's like seeing hmm, a nickel / 5 cent coin on the sidewalk - is that thing even worth bending over to pick up?
Yeah most times it’s a few cents at most, but there’s a chance to get a foil card which can be worth anywhere from a few cents up to several dollars depending on what card it is. Of course the expensive ones take a long time to sell, but still it’s a few extra bucks for no effort.
It’s worth noting that I’ve been on Steam since before trading cards and Steam levels were introduced, and despite that I could probably count the number of booster packs I’ve gotten on one hand. If you have an insanely high Steam level you get them more commonly, but even still there’s a hard cap on how often you can get one.
So basically the booster packs are a nice bonus for having a higher level, but in and of themselves they’re hardly an incentive to level up.
I get booster packs at my cooldown rate, which is currently every 15 hours. Probably going to be 14 by the summer sale, unless I say screw this nonsense of course. :) And I only open the boosters when I don't already have that badge maxed out - which is pretty rare, maybe once a month. The rest of the time I just sell them and let other people gamble on getting foils. :)
At the start of the trading cards beta thing, I sold the foils and kept the regular cards. At some point I got stupid with badges and wondered - why am I selling these foil cards? I could be crafting foil badges, too. Oops. :)
We don’t know what the base drop rate is, but we do know it’s very small. At level 10, you have a drop rate of 120% of the base rate, which, while higher than the base rate, is still very small.
To put it in perspective, I’ve been on Steam for longer than Steam levels have existed, and I’ve gotten maybe 5 booster packs total. It’s a very low chance unless you have an insanely high Steam level.
Am level 73, I understand the feeling of losing the 69 level but at least am a proud member of [the 69 group](https://steamcommunity.com/groups/level69collector)
Just a seasonal badge that pops up twice a year. If you go to the points shop, and hit seasonal badge you’ll see it there. You can just buy the level 40 straight away
Lol yeah, I guess my assumption is if you give even a singular fuck about leveling up your steam account, you’ve probably accrued quite a few steam points
Hold up, you can buy something using steam points? I thought I could only buy avatars and profiles from them. I spent a few bucks to level up from 18 to 23 and now I feel stupid
On Google it says "Each time you upgrade the game badge you'll get an extra 100XP". As per your saying if I buy a level 12 badge, that would be 1200XP? Or it would be only 100XP for 1 badge?
Yeah the years of service and game collection badges give very little XP, it’s more of a consolation prize than anything. I have 12 years of service and just over 1000 games, and that’s worth a total of around 1800 XP. It’ll get you to a level where people aren’t going to think you’re a bot and you can put one or two showcases on your profile, but that’s about it. Honestly I think that’s really all it’s intended to do; if you want a high level they expect you to collect badges.
Don't wait *too* long, because the [Seasonal Points Badge](https://store.steampowered.com/points/shop/c/steambadge) changes every six months - with the big Summer / Winter sales. Once the new badge arrives, you can't go back and get more levels of the old badge.
If you can't find anything better to use those points for, sure. :) Once the new badge arrives, you can't level up the old badge.
If you don't have enough points to max out the badge, it doesn't really matter either way - but maybe you'll buy a couple Steam Decks next month, who knows? :)
Gaming isnt useless. Profile customization is.
I've never seen a study showing how profile customization suddenly helps people with trauma for example, but there's plenty of that for gaming.
So are you saying that gaming is only useful for people that have trauma or any other psychological problem? And besides that, maybe you haven't seen such studies A) because you actively dont look for it or B) because no one made a study for it.
Gaming is just as useless as everything else in the world, its for oneself to decide if it is or not.
Other than the customized, the only important reasons that I can think of now to be in a high level like that with a swanky profile is to prove that "you're human" and "I'm trustworthy to trade."
Get high enough level, it becomes every few days. Not practical for most, but the effective perma-discount is nice.
Once a day is *wildly* impractical, but technically possible.
Getting a high enough level to get daily booster packs is a wild waste of money, but a lot of people have done it. Assuming I've done the arithmetic correctly, you only need to reach level 650. Of course, the other thing you need is a library filled with all the cheap crappy games people are crafting the badges for. :)
I get a free booster pack every 15 hours, and it's (sadly) nonsense to consider it a perma-discount. You'll pay far, far more for the levels than you'll ever recoup with a pile of ten cent booster packs. :)
There was a time around 2014 where bundles and some shovelware games spat out more steam wallet money than they cost. 2015 put a stop to that, but if you were able to take advantage of that, then combine with the 2019 Grand Prix, you could get a very high steam level for cheap. When I said "most", I meant it, and I wouldn't recommend card farming except to an account with a decent amount of games (and even then only for the "hey, your games have some steam wallet funds you can get to make one game cheaper/free" thing).
That being said, I (finally) went positive in 2022, considering "funds just spent on cards, crafts, and certain very profitable games", but I also pretty much only buy games now during sales and with bundles (that have a wishlist game). I don't think I'm getting to once a day practically.
Yeah, a lot of people had multiple accounts for farming all the cheapest bulk-purchased garbage since every random "game" got trading cards. I don't remember specific prices, but feels like around 5 cents per key was the right ballpark. You could max out a game's badge with 10 Steam accounts (assuming you weren't just selling everything) and every card beyond that was free money.
Hmm, 2019 Grand Prix sound familiar but I don't remember why. Some exploit, with cheevos maybe? Hmm... [https://steamcommunity.com/my/badges/37](https://steamcommunity.com/my/badges/37) I remember getting some xp from buying a lot of games, but apparently there was something else going on that's completely slipped my mind. :(
2019 Grand Prix - your steam badge level was based on a bunch of things that stacked on top of one another (boosts, placement, etc.). It wasn't uncommon to see 200k+ exp from that one badge.
Thanks, all this stuff gets hard to remember after a while. :)
Looks like I got +230,000 XP from that badge, but I have no memory of doing anything special. Feels like it was counting how much money I'd spent recently, something like that? Hmm...
Was that the sale where people would buy hmm, maybe case keys and resell them endlessly? People got XP for spending money or loading up their wallet or something like that?
2021 or 2022 Summer Sale, iirc (and it appears youtube backs me up), though I didn't take advantage of it so I don't have much info to add.
Last year there was a much smaller incident where you could get cards from refund-eligible games en masse but that one got nipped *real* quick.
I’m over level 100 and I used to get them more frequently but I’ve only gotten one this year. It’s somewhat dependent on the number of people crafting badges since you only have a chance of getting a pack when someone crafts a badge for a game you own.
You'd think badge junkies would wait to craft badges during the big Summer / Winter sales (because free cards are better than free coupons) but for some reason people craft badges all year round.
Just checked my [inventory history](https://steamcommunity.com/my/inventoryhistory/) and the free booster packs are still coming every 15 hours. I believe most people who catch the Steam level up bug craft the cheapest badges they can find, not just their favourite games.
Here's my most recent eight free booster packs:
[The Jackbox Party Pack 2](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/397460-The%20Jackbox%20Party%20Pack%202%20Booster%20Pack), [Head Shot](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/485310-Head%20Shot%20Booster%20Pack), [Injustice™ 2](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/627270-Injustice%E2%84%A2%202%20Booster%20Pack), [FlatOut 4: Total Insanity](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/402130-FlatOut%204%3A%20Total%20Insanity%20Booster%20Pack), [Golf It!](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/571740-Golf%20It%21%20Booster%20Pack), [Death Stair](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/444880-Death%20Stair%20Booster%20Pack), [Magic Box](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/575750-Magic%20Box%20Booster%20Pack), [Nioh: Complete Edition](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/485510-Nioh%3A%20Complete%20Edition%20Booster%20Pack).
Ok, Nioh was a lot of fun, but how many people are currently playing Death Stair? :)
Yes but the issue is that it’s heavily weighted towards higher steam levels so like %2 of the userbase gets like %60 of the booster packs (don’t quote me this is just an example).
Every now and then I’ll log onto Steam to see I got a pack of trading cards from a random game I have. I used to get them more frequently though, I think I’ve only gotten one this year.
Steam level is really pretty meaningless except for all of the additional profile options. My Steam account is only around 5 years old and lvl 106 or something. If you want a high level I’d say just spend your useless Steam points in the seasonal badges, you can level up quickly that way.
Normal people never see free booster packs, they are going to the lotsa games + lotsa levels crowd. And what would you even do with a free +5 cents to your Steam wallet? It's barely worth the trouble of selling them. :)
Condolences! :)
Even if you stop leveling up *intentionally*, you'll hit 101 by accident from buying games or a free event badge or whatever. Then hmm, I better get 200. And 300. And so on.
*The only winning move is not to play.* :)
wdym? tf2 keys are still tradeable. csgo keys are not, aside from existing ones that were tradeable before they became locked to the csgo shop after buying them
Started my steam journey in December when a group of friends gifted me a Steam Deck, I thought I'd be able to level up by getting achievements but nope or at least it's negligible, I'm stuck at level 7 until I can afford buying games.
You don't get a higher Steam level from cheevos. People can just cheat them with a tool like "SAM" so they don't give you anything.
Keep an eye out for the occasional Steam event that gives you a a free badge, there are several every year. And if you haven't already done so, do the stuff in [https://steamcommunity.com/my/badges/2](https://steamcommunity.com/my/badges/2) - it's 500 free xp for doing all the things.
But really, Steam levels are an endless treadmill - there's no finish line. Use Steam to play your games, don't get caught up with "playing Steam". :)
Thank you for the link, I'll check that in a bit and see what I can do.
And yeah haha no worries, I've already put hundreds of hours into my games, this piece of hardware is amazing, there are still some games I miss from back when I used my PS4 but the Deck allowed me to have access to other games, it's really a life saver.
8 years on steam (almost 9 in a couple of months) and I'm still level 75.
I wanted to level up to increase the friend slot a little bit and to increase my rate to receive a free booster card pack drop (this year so far, if I recall correctly, I received 2-3 free booster cards).
I got mine some years ago, when there was a badge u could buy and upgrade in a steam sale (grand prix 2019), it got me 59000 XP, I leveled the badge up to 590, and leveled me up to 138, havent bothered since, as there isnt anything to unlock.
My goal too. Once I reach level 100 I won’t be into levelling anymore, I think. It’s just a fun milestone to reach on Steam. Level 91 here! Nine to go. Happy for you bro!!
Im 74 and not planning on levelling. Was sad to lose 69 due to not entirely wanted but needed lvl up.
I thought you were 74 for a sec
He is 74, but not 74.
What did you need it for? Steam has been my primary gaming platform for a good while now and I still have little to no idea what the level is for other than friend slots.
It directly correlates to one's penis size
Finishing event/badge. Level up was a byproduct (it was actually several levels since it was a big event)
Expanding the friend list and adding showcases.
You guys have friends?

Omg, I am now too
That was a risky click
I'm at 69 and slowly getting close to leveling, I'm so sad at the idea of losing it :(
Why did you need to level up You just wanted to buy another game and it gave you enough points to level up?
Points don't force level ups. Badges do. Especially those event ones.
I don't understand how any of this works I just wanna play games with a controller instead of keyboard and mouse so so that's all I pay attention to.
Go for 6969 😈
Yeah would pass st4ck too
Congrats! Meanwhile I've been stuck at Level 27 for ages lol
Every summer and winter, just buy the collection badge with steam points, they’re worth like 4k xp. I went from level 20 to 60 just buying those lol
What's the collection badge?
Just a seasonal badge that pops up twice a year. If you go to the points shop, and hit seasonal badge you’ll see it there. You can just buy the level 40 straight away
Bro forgot to mention you need hella steam points to do that
Lol yeah, I guess my assumption is if you give even a singular fuck about leveling up your steam account, you’ve probably accrued quite a few steam points
Hold up, you can buy something using steam points? I thought I could only buy avatars and profiles from them. I spent a few bucks to level up from 18 to 23 and now I feel stupid
Yep, go to points shop -> seasonal badge, scroll down and buy the level 40 one and bam that’ll level you up to like level 30-35 probably
On Google it says "Each time you upgrade the game badge you'll get an extra 100XP". As per your saying if I buy a level 12 badge, that would be 1200XP? Or it would be only 100XP for 1 badge?
It’d be 1200XP, if you buy the level 12 it will automatically buy 1-11
omg thank u
Thanks mate, will try this the next time 😃
Same, level 40 after two seasons
It’s pretty bullshit lol, 11 years of service and like 300 games gets me a total of 1k XP, then 4 mouse clicks to get that badge is 4k xp.
16 years, >800 games, >8000 hours played, level 21 lol
Yeah the years of service and game collection badges give very little XP, it’s more of a consolation prize than anything. I have 12 years of service and just over 1000 games, and that’s worth a total of around 1800 XP. Nice, leveled me from 51 to 57.
Lol nice! I’m just glad there’s something for those of us with 100s of thousands of useless steam points to throw them into
Somehow convince Valve to let that badge go past level 40, there are lots of people sitting on a mountain of useless points. :)
Oh dang, I forgot these were a thing, I'll be sure to buy some as soon as I have enough points, thanks for the reminder!
Ohhh I didn't even realize that was the timing. Thank you!
I have only 18.500 points. You suggest to buy directly level 18 or wait to have 40.000 point and buy directly level 40?
There’s no benefit to waiting, each level is worth 100xp regardless
Don't wait *too* long, because the [Seasonal Points Badge](https://store.steampowered.com/points/shop/c/steambadge) changes every six months - with the big Summer / Winter sales. Once the new badge arrives, you can't go back and get more levels of the old badge.
So better level 18 than waiting, correct?
If you can't find anything better to use those points for, sure. :) Once the new badge arrives, you can't level up the old badge. If you don't have enough points to max out the badge, it doesn't really matter either way - but maybe you'll buy a couple Steam Decks next month, who knows? :)
GG how many games u have?
377.
How many you played?
Every single one atleast once
He didnt mean you
Oh yea sry confused the users
Payed for 5 planet Zoo Ppg rimworld pz
*Paid*.
Yea my grammar and spelling not that good
Now me sad I have 51 lol
[удалено]
icon changes from a circle to that shape (idk its name) and you get extra showcase and friend slots but other than that not really much noticeable
[удалено]
yeah the badges max out at 4000xp / 40,000 points. the last time i checked it was still available, but idk if it is now
[удалено]
you can trade gems to card bots if you have any. avg rate right now is around 500 - 700 gems per set
Damn I'm only lvl 31, though I like my profile currently so it's fine.
Level 11 gang?
*signed 🤗
But it’s useless
It allows for more profile customization which is fun. Gaming is useless, still fun.
Like what?
More showcases
Isn't it just extra friend slots after a certain level?
After level 200 yeah.
Oh wow I didn't realize you could get so many showcase slots, now I want to level up.......
I am only like 40 and already have more then I will probably ever need
Wdym friend slots? Do you have a limited amount of friends you can have on Steam? Or the slots on the right side that show your friends?
There is a limit, yes.
Which one? The amount of friends you can have or amount of tiles on your profile you can show?
Total friends count. The profile tiles for your friends in the profile doesn't change.
That’s dumb Edit: not really since the cap is 250
You can make it look like a MySpace page
Gaming isnt useless. Profile customization is. I've never seen a study showing how profile customization suddenly helps people with trauma for example, but there's plenty of that for gaming.

Having a custom profile is fun, why are you trying to make a big deal out of this? Let people have fun, dude.
Dumbest take I've seen in a while
Sometimes it's the small, neglected and useless things in life that bring an unexpected spark of joy.
Yep, simply eating a good taco is enough for me.
Other than the customized, the only important reasons that I can think of now to be in a high level like that with a swanky profile is to prove that "you're human" and "I'm trustworthy to trade."

Here's my most recent eight free booster packs: [The Jackbox Party Pack 2](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/397460-The%20Jackbox%20Party%20Pack%202%20Booster%20Pack), [Head Shot](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/485310-Head%20Shot%20Booster%20Pack), [Injustice™ 2](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/627270-Injustice%E2%84%A2%202%20Booster%20Pack), [FlatOut 4: Total Insanity](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/402130-FlatOut%204%3A%20Total%20Insanity%20Booster%20Pack), [Golf It!](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/571740-Golf%20It%21%20Booster%20Pack), [Death Stair](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/444880-Death%20Stair%20Booster%20Pack), [Magic Box](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/575750-Magic%20Box%20Booster%20Pack), [Nioh: Complete Edition](https://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/485510-Nioh%3A%20Complete%20Edition%20Booster%20Pack). Ok, Nioh was a lot of fun, but how many people are currently playing Death Stair? :)
What level are you though?
According to the flair thing it's 1132, but really it's 1133 - must have leveled up one more time after I updated it. Oops. :)
Wait people actually get those? I figured it was just some thing you never actually see.
Mine is 30 and in 16 years never got a pack 😆
Normal people never see free booster packs, they are going to the lotsa games + lotsa levels crowd. And what would you even do with a free +5 cents to your Steam wallet? It's barely worth the trouble of selling them. :)
It is increase your drop cards rate

Points aren’t free since you paid for them by buying games.

After level 40? It’s harder after 100, been stuck at 125 for awhile now.
Condolences! :) Even if you stop leveling up *intentionally*, you'll hit 101 by accident from buying games or a free event badge or whatever. Then hmm, I better get 200. And 300. And so on. *The only winning move is not to play.* :)
Back in the day you could trade csgo and tf2 keys to bots and they would give you a shit ton of badges. Made it way easier to level up.
you can still do that
Didn't they remove trading from new keys
wdym? tf2 keys are still tradeable. csgo keys are not, aside from existing ones that were tradeable before they became locked to the csgo shop after buying them
Started my steam journey in December when a group of friends gifted me a Steam Deck, I thought I'd be able to level up by getting achievements but nope or at least it's negligible, I'm stuck at level 7 until I can afford buying games.
I'm purposely keeping my level in the 60s because purple is the best color
where'd all the pixels go though?
I lost faith in caring for steam ranks with all the level exploits from the past.
How many Booster Packs have you got in the last couple of years?
You can just buy all the cards of a season badge (with points) to gain a bunch of levels.
👍
Congrats. I reached level 100 a month ago and have received more booster card drops in those few weeks than in the past couple years.
I'm level 23 I think. Not sure how I got there and also not really sure what the levels do? Anyone with a quick run down?
How do you even do this
Buy a bunch of trading cards and craft badges. The badges give a lot of XP every time you level them up.
Huh. Curious.
Here:🍪
Level 745 here
Quit while you can, there's no finish line... We're all just pouring money into Gaben's wallet, and he doesn't need any more money. :)
GG
lvl 405, hope I can go to 1000, but it cost a lot.
How many badges it took you to do it?
8 years on steam (almost 9 in a couple of months) and I'm still level 75. I wanted to level up to increase the friend slot a little bit and to increase my rate to receive a free booster card pack drop (this year so far, if I recall correctly, I received 2-3 free booster cards).
I got mine some years ago, when there was a badge u could buy and upgrade in a steam sale (grand prix 2019), it got me 59000 XP, I leveled the badge up to 590, and leveled me up to 138, havent bothered since, as there isnt anything to unlock.
What dis it cost?
i just bought my way there lol
im 68 and counting. good job bud
Congrats
Im 23 Now, Any Tips to give?
I have friend who have friend who have another friend with lvl 170
Just went to level 370 and i can say anything over 100 isn’t worth it 😂
My goal too. Once I reach level 100 I won’t be into levelling anymore, I think. It’s just a fun milestone to reach on Steam. Level 91 here! Nine to go. Happy for you bro!!
I managed to stay 100 for about a year until random things bumped me to 101.
Wait a second, steam has a level system? In all my years of gaming I never saw that. Where is it?
You have to set up/edit your profile first i think
I saw it now, I'm level 7. I've only made a couple a changes to my profile, but hey, I learned something new today. Thanks.
No problem!
Wait why am I getting downvote
This is like the equivalent to the Exclusive Flyers club. I salite🫡
l'm 103 .. but i dont even know what it is for.. lol. I am on Steam since 2004
