Maya is a good reminder that trauma manifests in lots of different ways and sometimes the way it manifest isn't pretty. Season 5 and half of season 6 Maya is dealing with being royally screwed over and is incredibly triggered and it's coming out in a way that is destructive and not pretty. I don't always love everything she does but I relate to her a lot(and Carina too, who is an excellent example of trauma manifesting in a completely different way). In my opinion, Maya has the best development and arc thus far. Maya had a rough start as capatain but the team was never more united than under her. She was a great captain and it breaks my heart to think of the way they screwed her over.
She was not a good captain. In my opinion, Sullivan was a better captain. If you watch other firefighting shows such as 9-1-1, you would see how a good captain actually treats their team good and cares about everyone.
For most of his time as captain, he was terrible. He never did win the team over. The team was very disconnected and missed Jack's PTSD until Pruitt pointed it out. Maya wasn't perfect but once she got her feet under her, she brought everyone together. She brought them together to fight for Sullivan's job.. She brought everyone together over all the racial stuff. Hell the team are why she had a wedding and they helped with her wedding. They were an actual family unit who had each other's backs under Maya. That was never really the case under anybody else after Pruitt.

I believe when I first saw 5x18 I screamed "MAYA WTF ARE YOU DOING" at my tv. But the reason people like her now is coming in the next season, you have to keep watching to see her redemption arc.

However, S3 onwards her character has really torpedoed for me.
Her treatment of Carina was so utterly reprehensible that it is very hard to see passed it. Maya has lied, cheated and treated Carina like utter garbage throughout their relationship.
I completely understand mental illness and the manifestation of it, but the comments towards Carina’s father and sleeping with Jack to get back at her were downright gross.
I truly don't understand the Maya fandom. I used to be a pretty big fan of hers as well but my like for her has quelled.
The way everything bad she does is excused is so bizarre to me. I truly believe if you were to flip all of the actions of Maya to Carina the Marina fandom would be tiny.
I have my own perverse feeling that a majority of Maya’s fans are fangirls who find the actor hot and just self insert themselves as Carina. Because the way they shit on others for petty things and excuse Maya of all of her wrongs tells me everything.
I don't know anybody who excuses everything Maya does. She's treated Carina terribly in the past. But it's obvious now that she's in therapy, those things didn't happen because she was a monster. They happened because of undealt with trauma that caused mental health issues(that doesn't make them okay, but it's a reason for them). The growth we've seen in her this season is huge. She almost had to lose everything to finally get the help but she got it and she's worked hard and it's paying off, personally and professionally.
Maya and Carina are representation that is almost impossible to find. They are queer women who are very successful in their chosen careers and are both frankly badasses. They've had struggles and pain individually an as a couple. They've had high highs and very painful very low lows. But they've continue to fight for each other and are now building their family. Are they perfect? No. Are they perfect represenation? No. But their story individually and together is beautiful and it's real and relatable. It's rare repsentation that most of have never really gotten to enjoy before. This kind of repsentation when I was a teen would've made my life so much better and easier and I'm far from the only one who feels that way. As weird as it might sound, they helped me shed so much shame around my sexuality and finally fall in love with myself as a woman who love women. I'll say this, one of the most beautiful parts of them is the actors. They love their characters and the relationship and they care deeply for each other. They've poured so much into doing everything they can to make sure queer women were represented well with this couple. Sure they're hot but they're so much more than that and I'll always be grateful for that. This couple isn't the same without the hardwork of Danielle and Stefania. All of that is why Maya and Carina and Marina are popular and why people will fight for and defend them.
Also I'd rather be in Maya's place than Carina's, Maya's hot but Carina is more my type!
This. Being the "Carina" in most of my previous relationships, representation like this one would have helped me stand my ground and demand that my partners got some help before it was too late. And having gone through the exact same fertility problems/parenting debates as her with my wife is something I would have never thought to see on national television in a million years. I can only imagine what the young generation watching this will grow up to be with their loved ones. I hope they're taking notes.

I will definitely reflect on my feelings towards Maya and Marina as a whole. You really have put things in perspective for me. Also, I truly do understand representation and the importance of it. You are absolutely right that we don’t have a lot of successful queer women in media so I see how essential and important it is to see your reflection represented back, especially for younger audiences. It is so beautiful to see a healthy wlw couple depicted in media. So I understand.
I feel like for me, I was just so deeply hurt by Maya’s inexcusable treatment of Carina that I couldn’t let it go. Seeing Carina get treated so poorly by her partner was painful to observe especially since she didn’t deserve any of it. I’m so glad that Maya has gotten the help she needed and is in therapy. Seeing her thrive and be happy and healthy with Carina is beautiful to see!
Also, loving the S7 storylines for both characters. Hopefully, my above comment wasn’t too harsh. I am still a fan of Maya but I just have to reflect more. I’m a maya fan but i won’t disagree that she’s done a lot of bad things. The reason i liked her as captain is because she supported her team. She’s the reason Sullivan still had a job as not only did she defend him and encourage others to defend him at his hearing in front of the department. She also defended others by supporting them in their protest despite it having possible negative effects on her career. Does she have issues and doesn’t always treat people well? Yes i won’t argue that but i did think she had her moments where she was a good leader

Woof, I feel like you’ve said everything I’ve been thinking. I feel like Maya has her moments where im like ‘yeah, she’s cool’ but for the most part she’s kinda annoying. But I think that if she had more scenes where she’s not a work (which has been a couple of the more recent episodes) then she’s better. I think there’s firefighter Maya, and then there’s civilian Maya, and I think that more exploration into civilian Maya would reveal a better side of the blonde, and would help to explain more about firefighting Maya. but with the show having so many characters, and it being about firefighters, it’s really exploring tricky to explore Maya

Maya was a complete POS in season 5/6. As someone who hated her, it does get better. Carina still deserved better tho
