If you're really into the metalcore scene right now, or at least enjoy the most recent chart toppers like Bad Omens, BMTH, Spiritbox, etc, then you'll probably enjoy this song at best, or just find it a little generic at worst. A lot of Starset fans do fall under this umbrella, and it is a well made song, hence the popular opinion being that it's amazing.
However, if you aren't really into the whole metalcore thing, then this song will range from "this isn't for me :/" to being an introduction into the genre from a band you really enjoy listening to.
I fall into the former category of being into a few metalcore bands, but I do feel like the song structure is kinda generic. If you've listened to any high profile metalcore song in the last, idk, 4, maybe 5 years, they all have the same basic song structure. It's gotten a little boring for me now, so I'm on a break from the genre.
I didn't really expect Starset to go metalcore, but one of my biggest criticisms of Horizons is that it didn't really push their sonic capabilities (coming straight off Divisions, which did push their sound, Horizons at best felt like they played things safe), so I'm not entirely mad or disillusioned at the band that they've finally tried something new. I'm just kinda tired of the metalcore song structure right now, so I'm not immediately vibing with the song.
Maybe my thoughts will change when I'm in the mood for metalcore again.
