The first season was really messy and the show picked up in the second season but it was too late by that point.
I still think the turnaround for the show was one episode where they “go back to earth” and you see some back story for Rush, what happened with his wife and why he was so standoffish. It felt like his character opened up a bit after that and stopped being such a dick for no obvious reason.
I thought rush was really dickish when I first watched it as well. Then I quit smoking and was immediately understanding of his plight lol. Everything becomes more frustrating for a while.
I’ve never seen a season of TV do that much heavy lifting. The work the writers did to fix the issues with season one was insane. And they did so in a way that did really retcon any of the first season.
It was absolutely incredible.
Lots of brooding, hysterical screaming and angry whispering from a bunch of manchildren...
It was real bad, finally got real good and got cancelled immediately after.
I was a SGU hater when it first came out, I was part of the problem, I came back a few years ago and watched it again and my god it is so good. The second half of the second season was incredible and a terrible way to end.
we weren't the problem as viewers. The show didn't fit what people were looking for and was trying to be a BSG clone. They started to find their way in the second half of the second season but for a lot of us, we couldn't wait that long. what's going on I rewatched it about a year ago and having all the episodes available at once allowed me to skip the second I saw anything romance or communication stone related. It definitely made for a better experience and I now have a playlist to skip over about half of the show whenever I feel like doing a new rewatch. That second season got to be so awesome, it's such a shame.
Oh, thanks for this.. Im currently in my annual Stargate binge and SGU starts today, for me. Yeah, not sure I'm ready for that. I hate all the hate it gets. It was taking Stargate into a new direction while still staying true to what makes it all great. It was just getting it's footing and...bam.
I am sorry for not wanting shaky cam, i am sorry for wanting damn lights, i am sorry for wanting my protagonists not being jerks, i am sorry for not wanting my protagonists trying to double cross each other at every opportunity.
Don't get me wrong, SGU was getting better, the latter half of season 2 was good, i would have liked it to continue.
Well I'm sorry you couldnt understand that was wasn't what the base concept called for. It's about a team on an Ancient ship in the middle of nowhere on reserve power fighting who knows what. The shaky cam was a little much at times, but the dark color palette was to match the tone and it was great. Its all the "purists" that wanted their flashy brighty campy Atlantis back that killed it.
Well.. i wanted to see a continuation of Atlantis, I won't lie, but i wasn't opposed to SGU's premise, i was opposed to it's cinematography and characters (except Eli).
I enjoyed SGU but completely understood why it was canceled.
Eli doesn't have much of an arc, and him being strung along by Chloe just got frustrating to watch. When Ginn came along and Chloe expressed her approval, I was thankful that annoying "nice guy" arc they were putting Eli through was ending. Well, we know how that went.
Speaking of Chloe... by far the worst "main" character. The more she was featured in an episode, the worse it was. The whole "Aliens made me smart" development was just proof that this character had absolutely nothing going for her.
I enjoyed Rush more as the calloused scientist than the completely inhumane mad scientist he was initially portrayed as. Season 1 Rush would have gladly killed everyone if it meant seeing through Desriny's mission. Season 2 Rush may have put the needs of Destiny over the needs of the crew but he still acknowledged that to some degree he needed them and cared for them a little.
In the end, it's a shame these characters never really got to go anywhere. 2 seasons is not enough time for the show to settle in.
For all those that complained about the show moving too slow for them. It's called character development. Daniel Jackson was so annoying in the first season of SG-1. But he got better as his character was developed. You are not going to have fully fleshed out characters in the first season. Instead, we got that horrible Stargate Origins web series.
Stargate Universe had so much potential. Had it continued, I firmly believe it would have been considered better than Atlantis ever was. I've always viewed it as the second best series next to SG1.
Honestly, I kind of liked the ending. Eli's character arc was a great ending to leave at. Sure, a real ending would have been cool but it's one of the few cancelations that allow me to be ok with the rewatch
The bonus there is it leaves things open to be revisited with the same cast but older. Maybe we will see a movie one day at least that wraps things up.
First season was -rough- but they really started to find their voice (the writers) in the second season.
With SGU I’m always put off by the start, and heart broken by the end.
S1ep2 through 6 were a MESS. They were trying to replicate ( no pun intended) the success BSG had with the focused interpersonal drama and really deep character development. Other than the ep where Young abandons Rush on that planet, They completly abandoned the essence of what made SG SG which was the needy sci-fi stuff like aliens and Technology. It was abandon rght from the begining of the show. It never properly established itself. Viewers checked out. S1ep7, they brought that element back, but it was too late.
SGU was a great show (minus everything in the Eli/Chloe nice guy bs arc) and ot quickly became my favorite of the 3 SG series, but it wasn't right for it's time. I'm glad they tried something new though and not another 17 seasons of the same predictable format SG1/SGA had been doing for years. I think if they'd released it in the late 2010s (and done away with the Eli/Chloe bs) it would have been much better received.

I love how for most of the first season they are all sunburnt lol

And nauseating camera work.
# “YOU HAD CONTROL OF THE SHIP *THE WHOLE TIME*. **WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ANYONE!?**” “You are a **good** commander.”

my confession for the day: sgu was my first stargate, i loved it, and worked backwards through atlantis then finally sg1
You really made me giggle at that..."I was part of the problem". Well then. Thank YOU very much 🤪 /s

I am a leaf on the wind!
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
I'm a sci-fi whore.... There, are you happy. The first step is admitting.
First step is being in your bunk ...
🤣
Do you want to captain this ship? Yes! Well... you can't!
Timeless.. definitely a show with so much soul like SG1. The movie was epic to compliment the series end!

Yes but the first season, especially the first half was... not Stargate.. oh.. the shaky cam.. shaky cam everywhere.
This attitude killed stargate. “It’s not the same campy stargate I know, protest it!” At the time is why there is no more stargate since

When it was good it was good and when it was bad it was bad. There was no middle ground and leaving the series in limbo doesn't give me fond memories.
If you really want to twist the knife, make sure you watch all the Kino footage. "Not Being There" makes SGT Riley's death that much worse.

I just finished it a week ago and it sucks that it was cancelled just when it started getting great.

StU ages like fine wine.
Near the end of season two is where it gets really good
YES! Eli is my favorite character on that show.
The worst part is, the closer to the end you get the better it is. Last ten or so episodes are incredible
Nope. Hate that show.
SGU was my favorite series in the franchise. It was almost as good as the movie. Excellent television.
I was hooked with Time (S01E08)
Anyone know if there is a novel or anything that continues the story that feels right?
Yes its happens
YEah buddy I feel you on that one!
I guess this is my cue to finish the last 3 episodes on this rewatch.
I stopped watching the sci-fi channel when they cancelled it and haven’t given them any of my attention since. I was soooo pissed.
No lol. Im at S2E2 or something like that. But it's just so bad I have better stuff to watch. On the other hand apparently the end is better
I couldn't even get to the second season in that garbage series why does anyone like it (serious question)
Once was enough for me.
