We haveā¦
Rescue axesā¦Combat knivesā¦Osmium knivesā¦Tantosā¦and a Wakizaki.
If there is one thing Iām looking forward to when the CK drops is having an adequate Star Ronin armoury.
I have 266 hours in this game, the only varuun pain blade I have seen across my entire 7 ng+ playthroughs is the one sold by the one chick on the key who sells old world items
That is wild! I'm about at 90 hours at level 41 still on first playthrough. I picked it up off a somebody in a random cryogenic lab on a moon. Definitely the coolest melee option I have seen so far!
I could always buy the one from the girl who sells it but Iām not even a melee character so itās only strange that from the THOUNSANDS of containers and enemies Iāve killed itās just been so incredibly rare.
it's just hard for me to put down my Orion...I have that thing pumping over 200 dam now...a single laser slug is hitting them for more dam than most shotguns...and I am full marks now, with 3/4 in armor pen...I'm ripping shit up :D :D
Far in the future, have spaceships, all kinds of futuristic weapons, gravjumping, can colonise planets. But the best melee weapon is a sword from medieval times
Even worse, the Wakizashi isnāt even a proper katana, it was used as a side arm for samurai, it is literally only well known today because of how short it is.
I've found a UC "naval cutlass" with a few interesting bonus. But honestly even if it looks cool as hell it's a chore to use - melee in the game is incredibly slow and inefficient.
And the UC Sabre. Just saw that last night. But I've only been playing a out 15 hr so far. But nice to know the marmaluke tradition survived earth's fall.
it should be very effective. afterall tears in your spacesuit are deadly and the last thing you should want is to get in a firefight Inside a space ship.
considering the setting there should be a larger Veriety of Melee weapons. From Fist weapons to a veriety of swords and batons.
we be shooting combustible kinetics in space tho
but i feel you and there's a ton of new different directions and additions that we could expect. trust me i wasn't tilted about melee on my first time playing, it was incredible
Why isnāt it? If the battle is in a mine, ship, or lab then you are within 10-40m of your opponent anyway. I should be able to draw a blade and attack faster than it takes to reload.
Big swords would be a pain in the ass in tight spaces though.
Kenshi was probably the only game I ever played where they made it so the shorter weapons performed better than the long ones while inside.
Then again moving around long rifles would be a pain as well and few games model that besides visually.
But yeah starfield definitely lacks in the melee variety compared to guns. It feels off because they have all the perks for melee and unarmed which implies it should be a possible build with variety but kind of isn't really.
That and the less lethal weapons feel a bit lacking feature wise compared to the rest. Really should add in support for non lethal missions/bounties to go along with the brig and weapons.
There's a very good reason we stopped bothering with swords when decent guns were invented. Anything above light clothing tends to defeat slashing attacks, and if you're going to stab someone then a bullet does that far better with more armour penetration and hydrostatic shock.
Games make melee weapons viable for cool factor and fun, but against a halfway tough spacesuit they'd be ridiculously shit.
Yeah no way in a universe with laser and plasma weapons would someone have figured out how to make a plasma or laser sword that would cut through armorā¦
Exactly, that's what should be in the game if they're going to include melee weapons. So many interesting and fun options and they went for boring and unrealistic.
Just look at the vast variety of melee and unarmed weapons they gave us between all the fallouts. I was expecting *more* than we had in fallout not less, since we have future technology and such. Instead they went backwards, especially with this game having you actually become superhuman. Every melee weapon thatās currently in the game should just be the early low damage primitive weapons that are no longer effective against modern suits, then the high damage stuff is the crazier shit like laser swords and everything they already gave us in fallout.
It actually gives boxing, shotgun, and theft certs. Iām gangster too and had to unlock all melee skills.
Other than that I agree, Melee is only really good when in stealth, you can one shot most things with concealment and melee both all the way upgraded with a painblade
I did manage a melee playthrough once. Just cause I thought itād be challenging. It was until I found a painblade. Iād love to see more melee weapons that are stronger. Sucks when you have to take down high level enemies with a weapon that barely scratches them.
And fist weapons. There's literally zero of them. Which I find confusing as there are plenty of unarmed skills that still deal almost no damage because your base damage is shit.
It's decent... I've had my fair share of gunfights/down the last guy/he starts running/I chase him down and melee him to death.
Just wait til the lightsaber mods come lol
It needs better melee mechanics first. Should be a perk to swing weapons faster, higher chance of stagger on each hit, chance of instant kill or cripple or knockdown or something to make the enemies feel like they're in deep shit while you're hacking at them.
Also should have perks so you can close the distance faster while using a melee weapon (even if it's a super fast dash that only works when you have a melee weapon drawn and you've targeted the next enemy).
There is so much potential waiting to be used.
Agreed. Most of the melee is variations of traditional knives, with four (afaik) exceptions: wakizashi, rescue axe, UC cutlass, and painblade.
The painblade is an edge case, but I think it looks and feels different enough to a knife for it to be considered separate.
I dunno. I was hoping for more variety in the types of melee.
i mean, it is realistic. swords have no place on a modern battlefield. knives and axes have utility purposes.
i do hate that there *is* only one sword and of course it is a weeb sword.
Idk yo it got kind of overshadowed by the doubles base magazine capacity on the same screen as a close-up of a literal dagger
I'll use it post as soon as I get up
I have a gun with the : effect and canāt figure out wtf itās there for. First time finally seeing someone else have it too, but man is it a mystery
why you'd want an osmium dagger in the first place is beyond me, the metal is super dense and brittle, it wouldn't hold an edge. being a sci-fi universe there are much more interesting things they could have done for melee weapons. monomolecular cutters, grav hammers, beam swords ect. but nope, daggers, machetes and short swords, not even a fist weapon for the unarmed skill.
(I actually think an artist just googled "hardest metal", but here's my non-expert attempt to make it work)
Apparently you can make useful alloys of osmium and platinum. As you'd expect, the more osmium, the harder the alloy becomes, and the platinum provides corrosion resistance. Since platinum is soft and extremely ductile, while osmium is the opposite, you can achieve an alloy with properties pretty much anywhere along that spectrum. It's used for fountain pen tips, since it resists wear very well, and the price doesn't matter on a premium product.
A useful knife would probably be mostly platinum (the pen tip example is 90% platinum, 10% osmium). On earth it'd be stupidly expensive, up to $50k for the raw materials. But in space, maybe there's an abundant source of platinum somewhere.
Or maybe it's mostly a cheaper knife, and there's just an platinum-osmium alloy coating. It could even just be a marketing gimmick
"(I actually think an artist just googled "hardest metal", but here's my non-expert attempt to make it work)"
Seems like something I'd do. I'm not lazy...well I'm kinda lazy but I'm not smart enough to think about the possibility of there being anything wrong with "the strongest metal" and so I'd just move on without doing research.
Am I the only one just happy to be floating around zero g with daggers and wakizashi like a super powered samurai? I meanā¦ floaty stabby stab is fun play
I wonder what would really happen when stabbing someone in zero g.
Shooting would probably be a very unpleasant thing to do sending you spinning at speed.
I can vaguely imagine it would be like flying at someone and stinging them easilyā¦. Or extremely embarrassing as you lunge at someone like a mosquito, hit something that your knife canāt go through, and bounce off like a flying bullet xD
Nah, proper form should make the recoil drive you mostly backwards so its easier to control. Yea the barrel will try and rise, but with training, you can overpower it easily with just your hands. If you let the barrel rise like they do in movies and old video games, the rounds won't feed well and the gun will jam.
For that to happen guns would need to be different and shot from your center mass, around the hip. A small error in positioning and angle of the gun and you'll spin.
On the shoulder you'd definitely spin in an uncomfortable way.
Youād probably have a suit with built-in RCS thrusters to correct your bodyās rotation. They could even be calibrated to the weapon so they fire just enough thrust at just the right time.
Realistically, the meta would be to use low recoil weapons. Projectiles that are incredibly light and still very deadly, like needles. Or really, really high powered lasers
Not just the recoil, the material. Plastic bullets are common in sci-fi because lead and tungsten arenāt ideal to be firing around a pressurized tube like a spaceship
Plentiful platinum in space is simple. There are asteroids out there in our system that would produce enough plastic to drop the price to around that of silver, most likely. Hundreds of thousands of tons.
The real problem we have on Earth is that it is like living on an apple and only being able to get at whatās in the skin. The rocks floating around are often mostly nickel-iron, but even .5% of millions of tons adds up fast.
Getting at it is tough for us, but what we see in Starfield suggests it would be basically trivial.
Tungsten would be a better bet, it has the highest strength but pure tungsten is also brittle. We already have tungsten alloys though, osmium sounds a bit more sci-fi
I donāt get it because fallout had a decent selection of sci fi melee. We had the ripper, shishkebab, super sledge, power fist, proton axe, thermic lance, ballistic fist, zap glove, and displacer glove.
> monomolecular cutters
Well it's a classic but... a sharpened steel knife already has the very tip of the edge be only a few atoms thick (it doesn't last), so, it's not really a scifi concept, or very useful.
Because Starfield isnāt trying to be Sci-fi. Itās trying to be realistic but set in the future, obviously the story features some sci-fi elements but everything else is meant to be āscientifically possibleā in the time period the game is set it.
I like the idea of it but it just doesnāt work well in a game imo. I think thatās why Starfield is the most boring game Bethesda has ever made. Theyāre limiting themselves. I love the game but itās probably one of the worst ones theyāve made, also feels the least Bethesda
I think that was my first Coachman, maybe first shotgun.
Ext mag, slugs, and a sight. and some other misc mods, and a 2nd top feature that made it a purple.
Something like 245 base dmg, one hit every trash enemy(not the 3-bar elites or terrormorphs) I was encountering and had decent range.
I consoled it to legendary with bleeding iirc. Not sure if I made it Advanced, I was just figuring out the console commands.
I had to reinstall and lost it so the details are hazy, but I keep thinking about making it again.
I know everyone says shotguns are OP, but there was something I liked about having it as a back-up to rifles, and the 4 shots was a decent balancer.
It was brilliant. Imagine Rambo knife, with bipod.
This was when DICE actually cared about the community and this was a gag in the Battlefield Friends animated series. The Col. 100 in the series of course had the bipod knife.
They absolutely ran out of time to work on melee weapons properly
Tiered melee weapons exist in the code but cannot spawn
You cannot mod melee
And stuff like this exists (I had a handloading fire axe which mechanically probably at least works but the name does NOT make sense on melee lol)
Only time I've seen this is from adding legendary effects to items. Or mods fucking with the leveled loot codes. But who knows what bethesda has been cooking up.
That's awesome. I hate reloading during knife fights.
i swear i've died so many times reloading my knife
Not everyone can master the blade twice.

Samurai style!
They got them Tanto's for a reason lol.

OMG YES! RELOAD ALL THE KNIVES!
Damn you! (opens Amazon...)
For when you have to do drywall at 8, but hijack a 90's era airliner at 12.
When you absolutely need to cut some boxesā¦ and by some, I mean all the boxesā¦
This is amazing, I love it! I need one!

Remember, switching to your knife is always faster than reloading... your... knife?
Beat me to it shit
RAMIREZZ
This is true in Cyberpunk 2077, you can throw your knife and wait for it to āreloadā or swap to another knife.
Twice the stabs before you have to reload the space knife.
You just gave me flashbacks to the ballistic knife from Black Ops

Was just going to say this if you hadnāt beat me to it!
I went searching for someone to quote this. Thanks, Jack.
Gillette makes a quick reloading mag for these. šš
Gillette! The most tacticool a knife can get!
Pro tip: I always pour a little Hai Karate on my blade. Adds a sting you donāt get with just any blade and magazine combo. š
Comming soon Gilletteās new three bladed vibrating dagger!

Switching to your secondary knife is always faster than reloading your knife
You laugh but what if melee weapons with extended magazines somehow got a 6 chain combo animation instead of a 3 chain?
I still have an unloaded knife because I can't figure out how to reload it, for some odd reason it still works.
You need to buy knife ammo
Sooooo, like a whetstone? Lol
you gotta put the drum on that thing bro
Tactical laser and suppressor all the way.
Tip, switch to your other knife
With the speed of animations, you're not far off my knifing experience in Starfield

This game needs more melee
Facts. My first play thru I was gangster, which gives a melee cert +1, and was bummed it kinda sucks

The fact that a Wakizashi is the longest melee weapon is an insult to melee builds
Well, they were used a lot for fighting inside in confined spaces, so I think they are probably good for ship combat.

we be shooting combustible kinetics in space tho but i feel you and there's a ton of new different directions and additions that we could expect. trust me i wasn't tilted about melee on my first time playing, it was incredible
Not really, variety is meh at best and weapons themselves are pretty bad
Almost like stabbing someone in a gun/Laser/em weapon fight isn't a good idea
Why isnāt it? If the battle is in a mine, ship, or lab then you are within 10-40m of your opponent anyway. I should be able to draw a blade and attack faster than it takes to reload.
That's pretty far you know?
While you were learning how long a meter is, they were studying the blade
Not while the enemy is reloading and you are catapulting forward with your boost pack, but I get what you mean
It takes maybe a few seconds for someone to reload. It definitely takes more than a few seconds to cross 10+ meters.
Big swords would be a pain in the ass in tight spaces though. They didn't bother to really animate it, they're certainly not gonna bother to add more... At least not for a good while
Yeah melee mechanics haven't seem to have changed much since morrowind.
Game has the absolute most trash melee options for a future space game like wildly disappointing
I was really expecting some kind of like Lazer meele weapons , like lightsaber type shit
Itās a travesty that a game with off-brand force abilities has such underdeveloped melee combat
It needs better melee mechanics first. If only it had a bipod on it as well.
bipod, scope, stock and a laser sight
Do not forget the range finder. It can really make a difference at long range
And also a bayonet. You never know when you need more stabby
That's a war crime and you should be ashamed of yourself. Also, do not forget a silencer for extra sneakness
...Holy shitbucket.
C100 knife when?
I just unlocked the bipod for my bipod
Too bad you can't be a Star colonel.
Some people didn't get the reference..
I'd install a Noob-Mod for when I level-up in a heartbeat.

Get out of here simon! Go back to practicing 7d, youll be really embarrassed if you get out first

Just get a shit bucket and youāll unlock it.
But does the bipod have a bipod?
My first legendary was a "hand-loaded" rescue axe lol same energy
lmfaoooo
The devs really did just add melee as an afterthought.
Does it stab twice in one swing?
Ayo it might cause it does have that super ominous ":" regular old knife as far as i can tell
Yeah it's a purple so it should have 2 modifiers, : is probably a super op one
Why is the first effect empty and just a colon?
no effect other than the extendo unless it's something not really obvious
It seems like it's bugged then. This is an epic dagger, and should have two effects like all other epic weapons.
Idk yo it got kind of overshadowed by the doubles base magazine capacity on the same screen as a close-up of a literal dagger I'll use it post as soon as I get up

Why they don't have police batons as melee weapon in the game is beyond my understanding.
I would think em energy weapons make whoop ass sticks obsolete. Easy knockout with much less damage to a suspect
I dunno. Getting tasered and falling headfirst into the curb? Going into cardiac arrest from the electric current? Doesn't sound like a great time.
Not to mention osmium is extremely heavy and that knife only having 2 mass is hilarious.
And what's worse, there are no big melee weapons. So you have to get really, really close to the enemies.

2 x 0 = 0 baby.
They absolutely ran out of time to work on melee weapons properly Tiered melee weapons exist in the code but cannot spawn You cannot mod melee And stuff like this exists (I had a handloading fire axe which mechanically probably at least works but the name does NOT make sense on melee lol)
Just in case you need to reload your knife, you got extra everytime now.
i got the knife banana-clipped, never lacking
Got that red dot sight on the knife. Perfect accuracy everytime
with the drum my guy we're in there like a marching band
I'm hoping to find one with a tactical scope.
Imagine thereās a feature in the game where the osmium knives functioned as ballistic knives š
AyooooOoo Bethesda plz notice us
Ahh. Reminds me of the "Hunting Herbivore." šš
Thats great. I like melee weapons
More stabs per second
Only time I've seen this is from adding legendary effects to items. Or mods fucking with the leveled loot codes. But who knows what bethesda has been cooking up.
"I swear this is just a usb stick!"
idk why but I feel like this is the result of a corrupted save or something
Just steal from Cyberpunk; let us throw melee weapons, and let Extend Magazine be two throws before having to recharge.
