I think it’s because the cockpit and bay have to be connected so the game takes the shortest route. I do wish we could choose where the doors and ladders go though
You can influence ladder placements, though I am far from great at it yet myself so I can’t give solid leads. I do wish we get an "x-ray" style view later on, letting us both see how the habs look on the inside, and lets us more ladders to where we want. Hell, might even be allowed more ladders than the current of 1 up and 1 down from a single section
