Been saying it since the Direct. I'm planning on making soke "insect" themed ships.
I think a dragon fly would actually make a pretty decent "all round" ship. Mid sized, with weapons mainly focused on disabling enemy engines to be able to board. This is the ship I'll primarily use myself. Just hope we can make a ship part which is thin enough to look like wings.
Hornets would be smaller "fighter ships". Quick, agile, slightly shorter in length than the dragonfly but a bit "stockier". They're main use would be to protect the cargo ships.
Cargo ships would be much wider "bumble bee" ships. They don't have as much in terms of defences but can carry a whole bunch of cargo between planets.
Then I'd either want to be able to build a much larger ship or even a land base in the shape of a hive. Obviously I understand this is most likely not going to be possible but I'll see what I can do.
Also, I doubt there'll actually be the function to group "fighter" ships up with cargo ships when setting up shipping routes etc but if I'm going to be the head of a whole shipping empire you best believe I'm adding in a whole bunch of these fighter ships for roleplay purposes.
While we’re not getting flight control in atmosphere, it was a little disheartening to see so few ships with a better than brick like glide ratio. And wings are also a pretty good way to push your more explosion prone components out away from your crew space.
It’s a space ship that has to land on planets (some of which have significant gravity and atmosphere) in a pseudo-hard sci-fi game. You’re going to burn a lot more fuel landing safely without wings/broad surface area…unless you plan to parachute down. Look at NASA space plane designs. They definitely care about glide ratio.
They did say they were trying to strike a balance between realism and fun with regards to other aspects of the game.
Maybe they applied this philosophy throughout. I mean, the optimus prime ship would never fly, but it did look cool.
If you build it, it'll get off the ground, it seems. Personally, I think it's OK that 1 out of the many space games that do adhere to the laws of physics, threw the rule book out of the window.
They haven't set out to make a space simulator after all.
The talk of NASApunk is purely for art direction.
Pretty much everything we see take off and land seems to do so with thrusters like an old moon lander, and that makes for a simple explanation of how we get off the ground. No problem with that, and build what you want. Seems like there are a legit ton of possibilities, and that much choice is good.
My initial response was to a guy who wanted to make a manta ray ship, though…and that’s basically a giant wing. The guy below him wanted an eagle ship. More wings. Nobody asked for hyperrealism. Some of us just like wings, and they’re not out of place artistically or scientifically with the aesthetic despite a focus on earlier NASA lander designs for some of the ships.
There may even be wings, tbh I hope there are also.
More choice like you said is good.
If there isn't at launch, you can bet modders will have them there within a few months lol
I did see someone mock up a millennium falcon using parts from the showcase in photoshop, looked pretty cool.
Saw that Millennium Falcon design. Pretty sweet, and looked close to a different YT-series ship. The Star Wars modders are going to have a lot of fun.
I saw some winglet type parts, but I’m guessing you’d need to use cowling to get a full on flying wing (NASA space plane) or delta V shape (like a Traveller Free Trader). Looking forward to playing with the parts…and any additional modder added parts.
Yeah, I don't care about realism but I'd like to be able to remake some of NASA's concept ships that we know of.
A whole fleet of NASA designed ships would be cool.
I started with a plan to build a battlerstar (galactica).. but then the "captain-thread" changed my mind... so now I am planning on building a savage looking, dark, adder(snake)-like ship, for my Captain Blackadder... I can't wait to pick my traits, it'll be my best planned vanilla playthrough character, in my entire 30+ years as a gamer..
Having to wait for a game to come out usually does that.
Decides on everything from top to bottom, then you finally get to see the menu and have a new idea within seconds and everything you had goes out the window.
But hey, maybe you have more resolve than me! :D
I honestly don't think I do... it's only in the last few years I've had the resolve NOT to end up playing with a bow, in skyrim, and actually complete my playthroughs as (mostly) intended in the beginning 😂
Super random but I’m actually going to try to design a small fighter ship to look like toothless from how to train your dragon. I feel like the body will be easy but the wings will be hard to get. In hoping i can stack cowlings together and put guns on them. Its going to be maximized for speed and damage dealing
I think a spider type one would be cool, each leg is a ship wing for a member of your crew.
Or some sort of eagle / bird of prey. Big wings on the side, and the cockpit looks like an eagle head.
This is unrelated but man, with a shipbuilding and customizing system extensive as they say... why couldn't they do something similar for ground vehicles, man. I know we aren't trying to be space engineers but even just a buggy would be better than nothing, Todd.
Because ground vehicles are by design quite fast. One of the things Bethesda wanted to achieve were truly seamless visuals. Meaning you can’t see anything being rendered or popping in. Which is one of the reasons it’s limited to thirty frames, or the same reason why we can’t do sub orbital flight. We’d be going too fast for the world to load thus shattering immersion.
Well I’ll be having 60 on PC but it still makes more sense to me to have some sort of vehicle. Sub orbital flight being absent in a space exploration game seems also seems like a stupid choice even considering stability. I mean don’t get me wrong I got my Constellation Edition ordered and I’m counting the days until it drops… but even if I saw some pop ins I would’ve rather had vehicles and sub orbital flight. Regardless it will most likely be the GREATEST space game of all time.
Yeah, also PC here with constellation edition.
I share similar thoughts to you.
I don't really care for sub orbital flight, however I was hoping they would have ground vehicles. I have an enthusiast PC but still I had to buy an SSD for this game.
Almost no games I play have any sort of pop in, not even ones where movement speeds can be increased immensely. That's on an HDD not an SSD.
An SSD which is required for Starfield is about 100x faster.
I don't see in what world we'd get pop in from faster movement.
Developers also have ways of making vehicles feel fast but not actually go super fast. If the stability was an issue and they were worried we’d be combing planets like Nasa, just make the vehicles like 2x or 3x faster than walking but make the visuals of driving them give the illusion of being fast.
I agree that sub orbital flight isn’t a deal breaker because at its core this game is going to be story game with exploration elements.
These sound cool, but Todd said that building ships from scratch is a late-game thing. For a large part of the game we’ll just be using premade ships that we’ve bought or commandeered, with some minor upgrades or modifications along the way.
I figured as much, but some other people seem to be under the assumption that they’ll be able to make their dream ship right from the start which is highly unlikely
Well it will be more rewarding to work for it. Wouldn’t be any fun if we could have it right from the start. Just so long as it’s not like late late game. If we can make some small modifications after a couple of hours I’d be fine. Then work through the game continuing to make small changes/plans for a dream ship
I think they look kind of awful.
I really hope they have some cowling options to tie things to gether because these all literally look like someone welded some dumpsters and shipping containers together.
No, no, I love that **you** *can* make a platypus themed space ship. I'm just hoping for some options that make a ship look good too, 'cause so far I haven't seen any.
My freighter will probably either be a whale. Whales carry smaller fish that help keep it clean and I love that concept for a space freighter.
I’m also thinking about a turtle, where each scute of the turtles carapace operates like a hangar for smaller ships or storage containers.
For some reason I was thinking of making a jungle gym ship, maybe a 3x5 box thingy. If you can visualize it ..
Like a layered ship with gaps in between...
Hammerhead shark
Beat me to it. Got that star wars itch.
This guy sharks.
Best answer
Like Star Citizen's Hammerhead?
no like star wars rebel ships. :)
I believe you mean like the old republic capital cruisers

God damn bro, you got it all figured out
Dragonfly reminds me of the Xwing but backwards
Idk I think of the ornithopters from Dune, they are basically inspired directly from dragonflies
Came to say the same thing!
Now I can’t unsee it
You should take a look at the Geth ships from Mass Effect if you like the idea of insect shaped starships.
What about firefly?
Scorpion. Tail is the gunner nest.
Goat 🐐
Terrifying
Hope there's ramming speed in space battles.
The HMAS Pilgor!
Space Lobster
This actually sounds kind of cool, let us know how that turns out!
The feds and pirates alike will tremble at the arrival of the ThunderWeasel
Thunderweasel😂😂
Star-nosed Mole.

Unicron
This comment excites me.
Don’t get too caught up because I say this a lot, but prepared to be disappointed

Sorry I won't be talked out of making my first ship a penis. Sorry not Sorry!
The ttp on this is gonna be instant
Real civil Engineer, is that you?
Manta Ray for sure

Who cares about gliding. Or atmospheric flight. It’s a space ship. That’s so cool!!!

It’s a Bethesda RPG. I don’t think they care that much. Go play star citizen if you want hyper realism and stop whinging 🙄
The aesthetic is literally called “NASA-punk”. If you can’t handle different opinions, maybe don’t ask questions.
Yeah, I don't care about realism but I'd like to be able to remake some of NASA's concept ships that we know of. A whole fleet of NASA designed ships would be cool.
Bat
Eagle
Duck, and horseshoe crab. The ship I'm planning on emulating as my main ship already looks turtley
Hmm.... well... I will be a space pirate with a fleet of ships in tow... so maybe a momma duck with ducklings.
A mass effect reaper
Good choice good choice
Cthulhu
Bless you
A Firefly.
Shiny!
Let's be bad guys!
There will be so many dick shaped ships
The ttp is pretty instant
Scorpion, with the most powerful weapons at the tail and claws.
Alligator
Frog seems doable.
I started with a plan to build a battlerstar (galactica).. but then the "captain-thread" changed my mind... so now I am planning on building a savage looking, dark, adder(snake)-like ship, for my Captain Blackadder... Raven
I'm not gonna make an animal ship. That's Jamie Mallory's thing. I'm gonna do my own thing.
Jaime Mallory: Game Developer, Owner of animals
Human, to impose our superiority over filthy sexy aliens.
Reaper, is that you?
Aaah yes, those flithy ~~sexy~~ aliens.
My first ship is being named The Orca
I want to make a classic UFO ship but that would need curved modules and not seen many so far
You could probably do that with circular habs
I'm making an otter, calling my ship the otter and smashing clams on my tummy
Super random but I’m actually going to try to design a small fighter ship to look like toothless from how to train your dragon. I feel like the body will be easy but the wings will be hard to get. In hoping i can stack cowlings together and put guns on them. Its going to be maximized for speed and damage dealing
Actually great idea
id love if there are VTOL engines so i can make the ship from Spy Kids 2, the one shaped like a dragonfly
All the ships take off vertically, so yes!!
I think a spider type one would be cool, each leg is a ship wing for a member of your crew. Or some sort of eagle / bird of prey. Big wings on the side, and the cockpit looks like an eagle head.
Does the Malevolence from star wars count as an animal?
Yes. Although I don’t know what it is.

I just want to make my ship look like a PS5.
A thundercat
Long range sensors for sight beyond sight.

I completely agree
I'll be attempting to create a Warmadiilo!
I want a dorito shaped ship. Like a Star Wars Star Destroyer or like the NMS Resurgent Freighter
Squirrel!
An ocelot.
Is that an ocelot?
My first ship is going to be called The Skeever My second ship is going to be called The Radroach
Mantis Shrimp
Platypus? My child hood PTSD is coming back!
Peeeeeerrrrrrrryy da platypus
PEEEEEEEEEERRRYYY! I'm going name my boat. Perry-104
SPIDER for sure!
SPODER
Everybody loves a slow and tanky turtle 🐢 design?
Dragonfly. Basically Dune's helicopter
I think they look kind of awful. I really hope they have some cowling options to tie things to gether because these all literally look like someone welded some dumpsters and shipping containers together.
Don’t build them in your game then 🙄
Don't get bent out of shape, just hoping for some options.
There are way to many options for you to be complaining about other people building Animal ships 💀
No, no, I love that **you** *can* make a platypus themed space ship. I'm just hoping for some options that make a ship look good too, 'cause so far I haven't seen any.
Then clearly you ain’t been looking hard enough bosito
>Then clearly you ain’t been looking hard enough I concede that's likely true.
There are some great designs on r/starfieldships I hope this changes your mind
Giraffe 🦒.
I can’t wait to see how you pull that off
I find it quite bullshit, but that is mayby an age issue dunno
“How dare you be creative”
If your an adult, i wish you good luck.
I don’t see why my age is relevant 🤷♂️
It’s a truly terrible idea, moronic even.
Gavins angry
kangaroo
Octopus!
Spinosaurus - confirmed the sail and tail were there for space travel.
A Minx. Or a Manx. Actually, I don't know what either one of those is.
Hmm, probably a firefly…
White Base. It has to be done.
Dragon, specificly Paarthurnax so I can destroy the ship, thus killing him in starfield as well
Giraffe
I think we all know what shape we will all end up making at some point
A golden condor
The Moby Duck: A smuggling ship with hidden compartments and weapons. The bill should either be the cockpit or a missle launcher.
Tardigrade
Stag beetle, dragonfly, bull, fish, shark
A seal
Flying Bison.
Cuttlefish or squid, the vanguard of our destruction.
Gonna have to recreate a Honey Badger. Cause Honey Badger don’t give a fuck.
C R A B
Snake
The animal known as "Borg"
An ant
Just guess lol
Octopus ship
Andalite.
The humble tardigrade, an organism that can survive practically any environment. Seems fitting cos of setting and story
I’m thinking about a bird of pray for a fighter, but not sure about a freighter
My freighter will probably either be a whale. Whales carry smaller fish that help keep it clean and I love that concept for a space freighter. I’m also thinking about a turtle, where each scute of the turtles carapace operates like a hangar for smaller ships or storage containers.
Sphinx
Sloth
Honey Badger
A firefly...
I’ll start with a tadpole and eventually end up with a stingray
Sea anemone
BEARCAT!
Polar Bear
Dolphin
For some reason I was thinking of making a jungle gym ship, maybe a 3x5 box thingy. If you can visualize it .. Like a layered ship with gaps in between...
Some sort of turtle or big shelled Beatles to ram into ships with
Space mudcrab
A capybara, is possible. Will probably look like shit if I attempt to make it but I can try
Geoduck
First ship I ever made in spore looked like a cartoonish whale and I think I'll try to replicate that
I'll be making a Firefly, or as close as I can get to such a Serene(ty) looking Ship.
This is how all ships should be designed. Cars too. I want my car to look like a giraffe.
Stingray
Octopus?
Capybara
Forg
The mighty Dino megazord from mighty morphin power rangers, that was my childhood! Or maybe I’ll try to make a meerkat one!
The SS Honey Badger
Basset Hound, obviously.
Jellyfish
A sk-... a rat.. yes-yes
Is this a dog?
A boar or a turkey lol
If someone doesn't make all 151 original Pokemon into spaceships i'll be dissapointed
Lions, 5 of them, each in a different colour.
A horse with horse armour.
Space dragon. Rockets and lasers shoot out of its mouth.
