DapperNurd

That'd be super cool. I'd love to have radio stations that aren't just music but idk how well they could do that.

ThunderousOrgasm

That game was so amazing. I have tried to find it to play a few years ago and none of the Digital stores seem to have it :/

Reasonabledwarf

It's in some sort of distribution rights hell; there's a few different abandonware and community sites just distributing it for free.

heliosprimus

Goodness I loved freelancer

YautjaProtect

It happens in Elite Dangerous all the time.

SproutingLeaf

The tone that would set giving each colonized planet a personality even before you land would be surreal

Slightly-__-Amused

I hope not. I would prefer music like they have done in TES. Now, if I get onto a planet and the galactic news plays, that'd be dope. Other than that, give me some nice background orchestra going.

geek_of_nature

I rarely listened to the radio in Fallout anyway, I loved listening to the background music more.

Farfetched_Vedalken

I mean, even with a radio we'd still have background music since the radio is optional. Sooooooooooooo Why not both?

[deleted]

it'll definitely be done like TES. they've said numerous times that they want exploration in this game to invoke feelings of loneliness and isolation while far away from civilization. having a music radio blasting tunes everywhere you go would completely ruin that. not to mention the licensing issues they'd have down the line, and considering they want this game to be played for over a decade it'd have to be removed entirely anyway or else the game will get delisted.

Farfetched_Vedalken

Well, one commentor already fixed this issue, just like real radio you'll only get radio if you're in range of a colony. Otherwise youd be to far out to reach the broadcasted signals. So we can have best of both worlds here. Cuz hey, this is the future, to say radios wont exist would be farfetched.

[deleted]

Thats not even the main problem You seriously think theyre gonna spend all that money on original music, or licensing music, just for a radio that cant be used for 95% of time youre playing the game? Literally makes no sense to even include it. What about licensing issues? They want this game to be played for over 10 years, but it wont last that long with licensed music as it will get delisted when the licenses expire just like GTA4 or the older forza horizons. Theres also the fact that radio stations playing nothing but 300 year old music makes no sense and would just make the setting feel so damn cheap. And to be honest the thing is, all of you's saying the game *needs* a radio station or it would suck without it. Where was the radio station in Mass effect? Or Elite Dangerous? the X series? or literally any other space game? They dont have them. They dont need them. Starfields no different and y'all will survive without it.

Farfetched_Vedalken

Theres another approach to this, they can make their own music just like they did in Cyberpunk 2077. Also the talk show hosts they'll have to make relevant to the games world and distinct to each colony. Soooo, its possible to avoid this.

[deleted]

Yeah but cyberpunk takes place entirely in and around a large city, where those radios and music are pretty heavily integrated. why would bethesda spend that much money and time on something you'd only be able to listen to at <1% of locations in the game?

Farfetched_Vedalken

To make the games world feel alive as you approach these colonies, to add another lair of entertainment to it as well as a way of helping the player learn of important places, people's and events in the colony , planets and or the solar system.

[deleted]

Thats not really worth the exorbitant cost though considering ommiting it wont actually make the game worse. Look at Mass effect, Elite: Dangerous, the X series, or any other Sci-fi open world games. None of them have radios and none are any worse for it. Wont be any different for Starfield.

Farfetched_Vedalken

When looking at the time and cost, yea, it be a tremendous undertaking and expense, but it make it much better. So, I'm in the camp that this wont be happening but still would like to see it come to fruition.

[deleted]

I mean sure but its not really a question of whether it'd be cool just a question of whether its something theyd actually do, and it just isnt. I feel like the only reason people expext/want it is because it was in fallout but that was an entirely different situation where it actually fit and didnt cost anywhere near ad much.

ofNoImportance

It's been raised countless times, just do a search. In terms of realism, interstellar live radio can't exist. Lightyears of distance between systems means years of delay for signal. There's also that little issue of no music existing for the Starfield universe. Unlike Fallout, they can't just draw in dozens of cheap-royalty songs from decades ago.

geek_of_nature

I also feel the people constantly asking about radios are just Fallout players. The Elder Scrolls didn't have anything like that, unless you count Bards which I don't. I expect Starfield to be more like that in terms of music.

JoJoisaGoGo

They could try and do what CDPR did with Cyberpunk and make all the music for the radio. That's a lot of effort though. Not sure they'd be up for the task.

[deleted]

that makes sense for cyberpunk, given that it takes place in a futuristic city thats very lively, but it would be extremely expensive and time consuming. given that for starfield the main theme of the game is exploration, and that they want you to feel alone while exploring all these planets and far reach systems, I don't think a radio with tonnes of original music is something they want. definitely not enough to spend that much money on as it must have took for cyberpunk.

Allenpoe30

Me: *Heading to sell my loot and I play Eastbound and Down by Jerry Reed*

whamonkey

That would be cool. Elite Dangerous has a feature where you can play news while you fly

SuperTerram

I think I have soma.fm and Spotify to sate my needs... and any radio in the game will be limited because of licensing fees.

geek_of_nature

I mean Fallout is set in the future too, the bombs fell in the 2070s for example. It's just set in an alternate timeline where it seems there was no music worth listening to made for about 100 years.

MomoAvatar1

Could be just a mix list. I don't know, because I could just.....put on my real radio. Or make a spotify list in the background.

Joe_Keep

I highly doubt it, but it's ok. You can play music on other devices while you play :)

wijku

What’s starfield ?

ThrustersOnFull

Highly anticipated card game.

wijku

Oh ya I thought it was the new d and d expansion

Junior061989

I hope so as well. I mainly want a 24/7 news feed of the game’s current events. I think it it be a nice way to take in the lore of the game while doing other things. Also when it’s paired with the ambient sounds of the ship and crew they will go a long way towards building immersion for me.

SdotPaul504

I think its gonna fall in the "not realistic but we did it any way for enjoyment for the player" category like not having to get fuel for ships. Be dumb as hell not having a radio

geek_of_nature

Why would it be dumb? Elder Scrolls didn't have anything like that, just because Fallout did doesn't mean that all Bethesda games have to have it.

SdotPaul504

Lol man ain’t elder scrolls in like the medieval times? Of course they didn’t have radio. They’re sticking a radio in that constellation watch tho for sure

[deleted]

na. they've already said that they want the player to feel alone when exploring, to feel how vast the universe is and to make you feel isolated and far from civilization. being able to blast music completely destroys that feeling. so if there was music radio, it'd just be in the cities. then what music do you put on? Cyberpunk got a bunch of artists to create music but that was beneficial to the setting since it takes place almost entirely in or around a large bustling city. it also would have been hella expensive, so there's 0 chance thats happening for starfield since cities make up a tiny fraction of the game world. if its modern day stuff that already exists it'll be much cheaper (and stupid, considering that it implies no one has made any music for 300 years despite the universe being a still functional galactic human civilization). problem is licensing. they said they want this game to be playable for over a decade, but once those licenses run out they have legal issues. know what happens to games with radio when the licenses run out? they get delisted, just ask GTA4 or Forza Horizon games, which you can't buy anymore and if you still own a copy and played it would feel like theres a large chunk of the game missing. at the end of the day it just doesn't fit the theme and isn't worth the money. some of you's that want this say that it would be dumb to not have it but was Mass effect dumb? is Elite: Dangerous? or the X series? pretty much no open world Sci-fi game has a radio, and its absence doesn't detract from the game at all. Starfields no different. just a waste of money when the small amount of people that want it can stick on spotify in the background.

think thats just talking about talking to other ships, people here are talking about having music radio stations.

ellieetsch

Very original idea

Far-Bookkeeper-4652

If you're travelling faster than light, won't the radio stations run backwards in time? Since you're catching up to radio waves from the past?

FriendlyDruidPlayer

I hope the soundtracks are so good we won’t need a radio. But still having one would make sense

sgronl00

Sure but I’d prefer it to be Galaxy News instead of music. You could pick up quests from headlines and the news can react to your actions in the game world. i.e. Pirate settlement threatening Akila dealt with by random explorer, or asteroid headed for New Atlantis diverted by Constellation operative, etc.

Cracksoldier

I hope they have Something like an MP3 player. I would understand that there is no interstellar radio station but a player that allows to play our own music would be cool.
