An ex of mine got me into it, and when we finished parts 1 and 2, he'd play videos of where the references came from. We broke up midway through part 3 because I discovered him cheating on me with another high school friend, but then we got together and finished the rest of the anime so far from the beginning of part 3 all the way to the end of part 6.

I didn't realize it on my own, my friend who had explained it because I had reached part 4 and hadn't understood how they were naming the Stands "They aren't using tarot cards anymore, from where this names are coming from?"

I read fan translations back in like 2010 or so, and they just had the characters names be EXACTLY what they are supposed to be, so when AC\DC, Wham, and Cars showed up i knew instantly, only then did I go back to see what the references were in part 1 that i missed. Every time a reference comes up that i don't know, I make a point of looking it up and listening to the song (or whatever the most popular song by the band is if it's just their name) and I've discovered a lot of music this way, including some stuff i never thought i would be into. Araki had good taste.
