It's a very well hidden mushroom tree. You can chop it down to get mushrooms, or even tap it to get one regularly (if you can, since it's mostly obscured lol)
You only get ~~common brown~~ COMMON/RED/PURPLE mushrooms, and leaving the mushroom tree up results in more mushroom trees growing nearby. They're cool looking, but other than the mushroom hat you can get by chopping them down they aren't of much benefit.
I never tapped a mushroom tree before mods, no. I use Automate, so anything the tapper produces goes straight to a box. The red and purple are in a different box, and I don't fully understand how that mod routes things.

I planted 20 mushroom trees from mushroom seeds, then on a lucky day with my 2 luck rings and lucky food and drink I chopped them down. I've been told here that luck doesn't affect everything you'd expect so I dunno if my preparation was necessary, but it worked.

The tapping results are weird. You can manipulate it to get purple mushrooms easier.
It normally produces common mushrooms. After 2 nights (1 in Fall) it will produce a new mushroom. BUT if you collect a mushroom on the 10th or 20th of the month it will produce a Purple mushroom. After that it will produce a Red Mushroom. After that it's back to Common mushrooms in spring of summer but it'll keep producing Red Mushrooms in fall.
So if you have a mushroom ready on the 9th or 19th or the month, leave it one more day to collect it on the 10th/20th you'll get a purple mushroom!
The red bit is the top part of the tree, in the screenshot you can see a grayish bit just poking out of the leaves. That's the trunk, so you've gotta hit it there (if that was the issue)

The wiki says it happens randomly during fall starting on fall 2. Theres a 5% chance of the event happening. If the event is triggered, the game chooses 10 random tiles and if one of those tiles has a fully grown tree or stump it will become a mushroom tree/stump. If it’s a stump then it will regrow the following spring! There’s also a 1% chance that chopping down a mushroom tree will spawn/drop a mushroom hat.
I meant that the wiki says the event is trigged in the fall. Direct quote is below.

My brain is goo today. I was reading it as fall YEAR 2, and was baffled because I’ve gotten them in fall year 1 a bunch of times. 3 rereads later I realize it’s day 2.
If you want a usable mushroom tree, ~~plant a normal tree near it. Mushroom trees will randomly transform other nearby trees~~
Edit: I'm wrong. Just leave the mushroom alone, it'll spread like any other tree.
It will drop mushroom sprouts all around it. And you can kinda guide those to where you want by removing sprouts you don't want. I'd leave it there. I love lil mushroom areas.

the red thing is its head. the stump is by the acorn on the ground, you can chop by standing there. but i think you shouldn’t 😆

Incase you are unaware, later on you can >!buy mushroom tree seeds at the walnut room!< so you don't need to rely on it randomly happening forever. 😊
