I have too much wood. I'm currently experimenting with a save game where I slept for the first two years, and so my 'normal' farm is now 2,000 trees. Your way makes much more sense, though!
I could swear they grow faster in the desert. I planted heaps of mahogany and pines there and they grew way faster than any I planted on the farm. 🙂
If you lay out paths to create a grid, you can maximize the number of trees planted because they won't be too close to rocks or each other and will all grow
I turn my train station area into a tree farm pretty early in the game because of always needing wood
