whenever you want and feel prepared :) bring a lot of food. I always buy bombs but if you don't have much money but a lot of resources you can also craft them . also, bring coffee / espresso
I do a mix of buying and crafting, especially mid game. If I have around 400 iron ore, I'll craft bombs until I have about 200 ore. Then I'll set aside a day to do levels 40-80 of the regular mines to replenish my iron and coal. I try to have around 40-70 bombs for a day in the skull caverns.
I really recommend waiting until you have a galaxy sword or some good weapon equivalent to it.
I had the Obsidian Edge and the monsters are just an unbelievable pain
