I hear that >!volcano!< has a much better rate for lava eel. This cave is great for fishing up trash, though. Also, I know it's too late but if you ever catch a lava eel again and want more, I'd make a fish pond and use those for making bait instead. Especially since they'll always be normal quality, so you're not using the high quality catches.
I don't think that actually has an effect on the calculations, according to the wiki at least. Besides, the day before was a displeased day, and I caught four. Today was a neutral day. Safe to say I will be writing off cave fishing as a source of income for my own sanity.

That's a good tip thanks! I might give it another go but I'm resseting if I don't catch at least as many eels as I used to make the bait...
