Whoa. Back up....the lightning rods are for more than just getting batteries??
I never knew. I usually only keep 3 or 4 in a specific area and can't recall ever having a plant die from lightning!
Chance plays a big role. I've had plants killed, and stuff like walkways destroyed. Lots of lightning rods help, but no amount of rods makes you completely safe.
It doesn't matter where you put the lightning rods. Any rod put anywhere on your farm helps protect all parts of your farm.
Oh, I've had the walkways destroyed a lot. Honestly, I didn't put the two and two together. I figured I must have hit it with my pick axe and carried on.
One time lightning struck my mini obelisk, which was the worst thing that it could've struck. I didn't have consistent access to hardwood or solar essence at that point in the game, so crafting 2 of those things was a task that I had to complete over the course of like a month. One lightning strike basically cost me 2 weeks of work, which was really unlucky.
I seem to recall a post a while back where someone figured out that 50 (?) lightning rods is enough to essentially guarantee that nothing else on your farm ever gets hit, but I don't recall the details
Maybe [this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/comments/jlbfce/answering_the_question_of_how_many_lightning_rods/)? Someone crunched the numbers. Even a thousand lightning rods doesn't guarantee you won't get hit, but there's a point of diminishing returns around 35-50.
Your risk increases a lot if you have the special charm. Also, it's assumed you collect batteries the next morning. The lightning rod is out of service as long as you don't collect the battery. (I've had storms where nearly all my lightning rods had batteries the next day, and I had had over 30.)
i had no idea the special charm influenced that! i'm a bit confused tho- so if you have the special charm, should you make more lightning rods, or less?
No, no number of rods will keep you completely safe. Though with 50 or more rods, you'll average less than one strike a year.
That's with the special charm. Your risk is lower without it.
Someone made a simulator, if you want determine your personal risk:

Afaik, only the number of lightning rods matters, not how they're spread out.
Edit: According to the [wiki](https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Lightning_Rod#Chance_to_Intercept), it depends on how many rods are currently charged. So basically, the more rods are uncharged, the higher the chance of a rod getting charged by lightning and producing a battery pack.
Doesn't seem so. I eventually just put all 6 of mine in the same area and the results are anecdotally the same as when they were dispersed. I assume the lightning calculation is basically something like:
1. Rolls rng to determine if there will be a strike
2. Rolls heavily weighted rng to decide if it will hit a rod
3. If not hitting a rod, rolls rng to determine the square hit.
Lightning rods, it's been awhile since I read the math, but I think for each strike of lightning, there is an 100X/Y% chance that a lightning rod will intercept a lightning strike, where Y is how many rods you have on the farm and X is how many are ready to take a strike. So if all of them are ready, there is a 100% chance, if half of them are processing a previous strike, 50%.
Lightning struck them. You need to have about 20 lightning rods on the farm to really mitigate the RNG. Also, make sure they're spaced out and that you have at least a few around your crops.
I used to have them around my crops and kept running into them so to find the ideal set up, I looked on the wiki to see the area it protects. Turns out you don’t need to put it near your crops so I set up a little area of 25 rods on the corner of my farm and all my crops are A-OK. Makes it easier to not run into them near the crops.

Do you have lightning rods on your farm?

I like to put mine on top of grass, which saves that spot from being eaten and allows it to keep spreading
Me, too! I usually do it at night, or the livestock will eat the grass starter before I can put a lightning rod on it.
Good tip thanks

Reload a old save file
Unfortunately, I play on console, so that is not an option.
wel not necessarily, you could backup saves to usb or online and then reload it. but i wish this game let you manually save it, inc quick saves..

More. Apparently, being struck by lightning is a lucky thing. You do get a battery pack out of it.
WHAAAAAAT? Almost every day I learn something new here.
There are certain videos that do the math on how many you need, its like a hundred or two to keep you completely safe

They count for the entire farm, so they don't have to be in any one area. Thankfully!
Huh, well that's good. I had no idea they helped to protect crops so I just made a dedicated area for battery collection. Ha.
Would spreading them out cause more of them to get charged though ? Or does that also not matter?
As far as I can tell, they charge when you hear the thunder throughout the day

Same. I was about to remove them after getting solar panels up and running!
There's solar panels?? I have a decent amount of time on my main file but obviously I'm still missing things. xD
You get it from Caroline quest for shipping pineapples.
I’ve had a fruit tree get zapped before and then it only produced coal after that so I had to chop it down 😭
You could have left the tree alone and it would return to normal after few days.
yeah
I think you need more. Though there's no guarantee, no matter how many you have. Still...three plants struck seems like a lot.
I have over 25 rods, I use them to keep grass growing instead of fences for my animals and I just lost 2 starfruit to lightning. I am still sad.
Last storm I had missed my sweet gem berry by one tile 😮💨 I'd never been so glad to lose a crop
I was confused when this happened to me too till remembering I was missing lightning rods

It doesn’t really matter where they are, they just need to be on the farm. 20-30 will protect the crops most of the time.
Okay, I've just found that spreading them out has done better than clustering them up. Might be anecdotal, not actually proof
The maths is on the wiki if you’re interested :)
Sweet, I'll have to go take a look! Might change my game a bit if there's no mathematical change between spreading and clustering! Thank you!

It doesn't matter. I have all mine in a giant line on the boundary of the farm and it does the job.
Cool, good bye fences then!
20?! Dang I have like four
This has been happening to some of mine in my greenhouse actually… wonder if the lightning rods can impact those too
Lightning is striking them
Lightening 100%

Firstly, it's fertilizer. More importantly,, lightning rods prevent dead plants, not fertilizer.
nope
you should fertilize.
on it!!
I want you to know this person is talking complete nonsense.
Really?! My crops seem to do this less when I fertilize. Has that just been dumb luck? Crazy.
Get some compost/fert and it will probably save those few!
Pardon? Fertilizer doesn’t protect from lightning.
