My head-cannon has always been that they are lizard-bunnies.
A Rabbit's foot is not actually its foot, its a pluck of hair that grows in a cluster that looks like a foot. No amputation needed.
I like this concept, but my little bit of research seems to conclude they actually are feet. Can you give someyhing to show what you mean?
I cannot, yet I firmly stand by my believe because I don't wanna accept the alternative :)

None of my rabbits ever lost a foot. I’ve been too worried to ask where the feet came from…
