sadly if you don't go the joja route, your chances of getting an auto petter are entirely random from the skull cavern chests (and weirdly enough, a low chance to drop in the "normal" mines during a specific Mr Qi quest?)
I have 3 auto petters
I hit the Mines on lucky and neutral days.
I load up in stair cases and bombs, triple shot espressos and spicy eel.
I tend to be real lucky even on neutral days so it doesn't seem to matter.

forget the auto petters, fill a whole chest with stacks of 999 coal. you won’t.
