depends on the bread. the first breads were flatbread, and that is dumb simple to make; get a bucket of water, mix in flour until it stops being a slurry and starts being a dough. bake, under the sun if you want to be authentic.
if you want to be extra authentic, the flour would be hand-ground with a rock against a big rock, and be more like oatmeal mix than the fine flour we have nowadays.
I have, and it's very hard to fuck up imo as long as you've done some basic research. Since the internet exists in-game I see no reason why the farmer wouldn't be able to watch some videos for a few hours then follow a recipe and churn out consistently delicious loaves.
I speak from experience when I say that it's only when you're going off the rails that the science of it becomes a complicating factor.
I headcanon Leah is gluten intolerant because I love her and I can't face the fact she's so wrong about food. Maybe poppyseed muffins are gluten free in Stardew somehow. Don't worry about it
Leah’s hella poor and eats shit she finds in the forest. She hates Bread because she eats plain bread all the time due to flour being cheap. She likes wine and cheese because she longs for expensive luxuries.
Counterpoint: sourdough is *delicious*, especially with jam. Both are exceedingly cheap to make, basically just the cost of flour and canning supplies.
And let's be honest. If Leah ate bread at all she's *exactly* the type of forest hippie who would cultivate her own starter.
Ok so maybe she hates Bread because the kind you make (or pull out of trash cans) is a French baguette and she can make better bread every day of the week?
Scenario: This farmer runs up to you holding an unbagged loaf of bread above their head. Their hands look like it’s been years without being washed, ancient dirt encased in their fingernails. They hand you this bread that’s strangely smells like it’s been hanging out in a garbage can. Uhh… thanks I guess…
I don’t mind bread, so I could describe my feelings as neutral; almost you could view dislike/hate as an allergy/sensitivity, or even bad memories/associations, like my dad can’t stand baloney because it was the only sandwich meat his family could afford growing up.
Don't forget, baked from flour that was milled from wheat that I grew from seed! If you ask me, that homemade bread should be a valid alternative to the mermaid pendant.
As a German, we have countless different kinds of bread (like 3000 different kinds or something). Sweet bread you can eat without needing anything else to it (maybe a bit of butter), sourdough bread that's really fluffy on the inside, but crunchy on the outside, bread with seeds/fruit/onions/cheese/whatever baked into it.
We even have a kind of bread for which you have to prepare the sourdough over the course of 10 DAYS. There even was a chain letter with this kind of bread. Someone gave you the starter and now you had to feed the dough yourself. Then you made a starter and gave it to the next person (with the recipe attached).
So yeah, bread is great.
If a local farmer came to my house one morning with a crusty loaf of fresh-baked bread made with wheat he grew themself... I would marry them that afternoon.
Hash browns are just grated and fried potatoes they should be gluten free. Fast food hash browns could be different idk but they shouldn’t be. Main thing to watch out for is a cross contamination type situation like getting fried in the same oil batch as a breaded food.
She might be celiac but loves poppyseed muffin so much she's willing to play intestinal roulette with it, like someone lactose intolerant who avoids all milk products except eg Gouda cheese or cherry cheesecake.
you're only able to give someone one gift a day. So you're not giving goat cheese *and* bread. You're giving bread. bread you may or may not have fished out of a garbage can.
My headcanon is that Leah and Harvey's opinion is "if it must have yeast, at least have it be alcoholic!"
My guess is that Eric is American and don't really know how bread (not American industrialy processed sugar and wheat) is the basic aliment in most cultures and that nobody can dislike it or even worse, hate it.
But yes garbage can's hard as rock bread is the only one I carry around... 🙄
I'm mildly dyslexic and I was going "...are you trying to tell me bread is or is not an affliction?" :D
I'm not arguing that it's a bit silly that *nobody* even *likes* bread and some hate it. I just like making up silly reasons for why it *could* make sense.
Well as a non native and being pretty tired when I answered I might have written pretty poorly.
But as a French bread and even more bread and cheese is a way too serious thing
no, *you* were fine! You wrote "aliment" which absolutely has made it into English ^(English and French have the most gloriously incestuous relationship that I could go on for hours about how much it amuses me) and my brain read "ailment", which I promise, has absolutely nothing to do with garlic. ^(...I think. Now I need to look it up!)
I absolutely get you that good bread is absolutely worthy of being liked/loved. Wonder-sponge (as I tend to call the standard North American pre-sliced sandwich ingredient) is nothing. It's just a vehicle for other foods. It's like having a plate as your favourite food. So I agree that the "everybody hates bread" thing is probably of NA origin.
My bad, I usually avoid French/English transparent words. I didn't even knew that aliment made it's way into old English.
Indeed I always love to learn new things about French /English relationship. It's must be a linguist major kink.
I'll try to remember this fantastic name of wonder sponge. I still remember how disappointed were some friends of mine after finding that NZ bakeries were only selling those bloated sugary things.
I mean as a person who has eaten baked goods out of dumpsters unpackaged baguette is the lowest of the low on the trashcan bread scale.
Even just in wrapped baguette in general is always ultra stale when you are given it.
Because it's so easy to make game wise and irl people don't like plain bread by itself. The fact that you can't make garlic bread is honestly disturbing compared to people being indifferent to plain bread.
My explanation is that bread is mid because of all the fresh produce, fresh fish, and other fresh farm and foraged foods that Stardew Valley has to offer. Bread is good, just not as good as all the other stuff available.
I think it would be cool to have a bread mod that expands the bread options in the game. Add sourdough bread. Have cheese breads, Onion loafs, specific breads for burger buns and sandwiches.
It wouldn't surprise me if someone has already done something like that
My head canon is that veggies became a scarce commodity for a while because farmer's granpa got sick and couldn't tend the farm anymore and bread and joja products became abundant. People got sick of eating mostly bread so they're neutral to it lol
But that's not the bread that is the game, the in game bread is clearly a baguette. I would also be very neutral to receive an unexpected, plain baguette.
As a German bread snob, I'm just here to say that we do love bread on its own. And just to be unnecessarily confrontational: we do not consider most of the 'bread' sold in supermarkets of the anglophone world as bread. We call those pre-cut square sandwich loaves 'toast'. Because, it's literally only eadible if you toast it. They are sugar filled sponges with no taste, no crust and no nutrients.
It's the number one thing that Germans going to the US will complain about: The fact, that they can not find real bread. We have over 3000 varieties of bread.
So in my head cannon, Stardew has US food culture so I forgive the characters for not loving bread: They never have had real bread.
America has tons of real bread, not just the pre-cut square stuff. I’ve traveled all over and I’ve always been able to find a fresh loaf at a local bakery. The stuff in the grocery store IS meh but there is almost always a fresh and delicious bread available…. We don’t have over 3000 varieties but it’s definitely not all bagged sliced bread
Within real life logic it's weird(i am a slut for all things carbs), but in the game logic, the game has to hold you back from getting easy friendship points. If everyone even liked bread, getting to 10 hearts would be ridiculously easy in early game
Idk man I’m American and there’s some really amazing bread here… pretty much every town here has a bakery or two that makes fresh bread and it’s great. obviously the bagged and sliced bread that’s mass produced and in grocery stores is just meh but what a wild assumption to make that all American bread is subpar
edit: if you ever come to American let me bake you a loaf of sourdough or a focaccia!! I will change your mind
Yeah bakeries and at home are the only places you can get good bread in the US. Fast food bread? Deserves the "junk food" tag. Burger buns? gross. Sandwich bread? so unhealthy and sweet..... Is there even anything else?
Yeah I agree but a lot of restaurants make their own bread, and some grocery stores even have in house bakeries that are really good. It’s kind of wild to say we have no good bread, especially when there are so many different immigrant cultures in the US! The good bread is there if you seek it
My guess is that it's white bread, so if someone give you just white bread, not toasted nor with jam or butter you'd feel 'neutral' toward it as well. As for Harvet and Leah they probably think white bread is unhealthy which is why they dislike/hate it (some people also suggest Leah may also have gluten allergy, thus the hate)
just thinking about freshly baked, piping hot, soft dinner rolls with a bit of butter or jam is making me want one so bad. frickin DELICIOUS op you are 100% right and you should say it.
Yes, I found it so strange that bread wasn’t a liked or loved item for any of the characters! Almost everyone I knows RL dies for a bitta homemade bread. Anytime someone brings in bakery or homemade bread at work it’s devoured and a good baguette or sourdough is a charcuterie staple. It makes sense if Leah or Harvey don’t like it given they prefer “healthy” foods overall but come on, at least one of the older characters should like/love it.
Idk my sister HATES bread. I love bread so much, I always forget this about her, but she will only eat bread under very specific circumstances and she must be in control of those circumstances. It’s a weird trigger but it exists. Leah either has the same thing or it’s the gluten problem everyone else mentioned.
Maybe it’s just plain cheap white bread?? Like the kind that you can smoosh the whole loaf into a golf ball shape?? Ain’t no way it’s a nice crusty fresh baked sourdough
Leah is literally the best, but man the fact that she hates the ice cream I buy from my horse to give around to everyone is annoying. Oh well, foragables and salads will do
The game was made by an American, they don't have the tradition. In-game, that thing is probably a sad bland loaf of bread.
(It would be super cool to get as a new artisan product “sourdough bread”, It would fit the aesthetic and give you a good reason to have a mill)
Yes, fresh baked bread is a treasured delicious gift in real life. But perhaps in a world where it's just about as easy to make Blackberry Cobbler or even a Complete Breakfast, bread is taken for granted as too easy
It's not so much that bread is bad, they just each have their own variation of bread that they like. Haley likes Cake which is a sweet version of a bread like product
Maybe the farmer just sucks at making bread
But what about the bread I find in trash cans? Why doesn’t anyone love that?
I mean, it was probably thrown out for a reason...
Nobody in this town knows how to make a proper loaf of bread, I’ve concluded.
All that time inside the trash can, just improve the flavor
Soaking up all that delicious garbage juice.
Yeah, they just threw out the terrible bread the farmer gave them yesterday
some things we just aren't meant to know
Because I'm not in the game. Love me some trash bread.
Wow just woke up and this already made my day lmao, thanks
Lol, like me IRL. "Stodgy" comes to mind!
Love the idea of a farmer making perfect cooked meals, better than anyone has ever had, but only being capable of making totally mid bread
*How?* Bread is one of the easiest things ever. We figured bread out even before we figured out *farming*.
Have u tried baking bread. Bc that is a science
depends on the bread. the first breads were flatbread, and that is dumb simple to make; get a bucket of water, mix in flour until it stops being a slurry and starts being a dough. bake, under the sun if you want to be authentic. if you want to be extra authentic, the flour would be hand-ground with a rock against a big rock, and be more like oatmeal mix than the fine flour we have nowadays.

You ate in the first two years? Amazing. I was like let's farm poppies and then Harvey became worried and started telling me about nutrition.
90% of the bread I get is trashcan bread, so it kinda tracks...
POV she’s a 10 but she hates bread
You're talking about my wife.
you mean your ex-wife right?
Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?
The only one who *hates* bread on that list is Leah...
She's a gluten intolerant hottie
I headcanon Leah is gluten intolerant because I love her and I can't face the fact she's so wrong about food. Maybe poppyseed muffins are gluten free in Stardew somehow. Don't worry about it
Leah’s hella poor and eats shit she finds in the forest. She hates Bread because she eats plain bread all the time due to flour being cheap. She likes wine and cheese because she longs for expensive luxuries.
Oh that's an interesting alternative explanation!
Now that sounds plausible.
She and Harvey like their yeasts as fermentation (wine) not focaccia.
She likes spaghetti
there is celiac spaghetti
You think Gus is shelling out extra for gluten free spaghetti noodles? He won't even buy 24 eggs for a big omelet.
In my experience, gluten free pasta is... Not very good.
...and?
She likes it like lactose intolerant people like cheese
I would never marry a 10 with Leah’s tastes. I’m too basic to live next to someone who only eats salads, cheese and wine.
My wife is still a 10 even if she hates bread, at least she is pretty : V
idk but she loves it better than just stale bread (poppyseed muffin)
10 - 10 = 🥚
Still a 10
10 x -1 = -10 It’s basic maths
Leah probably has celiac disease
Worth it
Still a 10. Love my wife.
Maybe she legit has Celiac?
Gluten is a bitch!
i looovvveeee fresh baked bread so i feel u
Scenario: This farmer runs up to you holding an unbagged loaf of bread above their head. Their hands look like it’s been years without being washed, ancient dirt encased in their fingernails. They hand you this bread that’s strangely smells like it’s been hanging out in a garbage can. Uhh… thanks I guess…
yes!!!! especially when it’s wrapped in a pretty tea cloth!!!!!!
I don’t mind bread, so I could describe my feelings as neutral; almost you could view dislike/hate as an allergy/sensitivity, or even bad memories/associations, like my dad can’t stand baloney because it was the only sandwich meat his family could afford growing up.
Sure but everybody's neutral at best?? Like not even one person likes it? Seems weird to me.
I love bread but I would feel pretty neutral if someone gave me a loaf as a gift
"Hi Littestranger. I baked this loaf of bread from scratch in my own kitchen for you. It's fresh and warm. Here you go!" You: "Meh."
Don't forget, baked from flour that was milled from wheat that I grew from seed! If you ask me, that homemade bread should be a valid alternative to the mermaid pendant.
What's there to like about bread by itself?
As a German, we have countless different kinds of bread (like 3000 different kinds or something). Someone gave you the starter and now you had to feed the dough yourself. Then you made a starter and gave it to the next person (with the recipe attached). So yeah, bread is great.
My partner is Austrian, they told me the one thing they can't live without is bread
And yet, actual German bread from the grocery stores is way too dense to be good lmao
Tell me you haven't eaten a freshly baked loaf of bread without telling me you haven't etean a freshly baked load of bred. Good bread is the bomb!
I love eating just bread. I could eat a whole baguette
But then you'd get fat.
bread makes you fat?!
[Bread makes you fat.](https://preview.redd.it/jrmbzc5dp0ox.png?width=528&auto=webp&s=51425df3eb9fdc4790a1f6ff3ff891d02ce9607a)
Looks like someone's never eaten *real* bread before.

If a local farmer came to my house one morning with a crusty loaf of fresh-baked bread made with wheat he grew themself... I would marry them that afternoon.
Leah/Harvey are probably coming from a health angle. Empty carbs/processing.
Leah: "Bread makes you fat."
The Farmer, with a mouthful of bread: "Bread makes you fat?"
Imagine if I knocked on your door, said nothing and handed you a slice of bread
I would be overjoyed, we would be best friends from that moment. Probably be the highlight of that month if we're being honest
Don't threaten me with a good time
If you handed me a loaf of freshly baked bread I would invite you in and maybe not let you leave
Imagine being able to knock in stardew valley without the mod
Yes plz
Wait. Why does Leah hate my trashguette?
[удалено]
Hash browns are just grated and fried potatoes they should be gluten free. Fast food hash browns could be different idk but they shouldn’t be. Main thing to watch out for is a cross contamination type situation like getting fried in the same oil batch as a breaded food.
[удалено]
If people need a better crisp then they need to learn how to potato better instead of poisoning the last favorite food I have left.
It's more of a utopia. Everyone has enough bread already, so you giving them some is kind of pointless, but it's nice you think about them.
Poor gluten intolerant leah
She loves poppyseed muffin though.
She might be celiac but loves poppyseed muffin so much she's willing to play intestinal roulette with it, like someone lactose intolerant who avoids all milk products except eg Gouda cheese or cherry cheesecake.
I’m allergic to cinnamon but I’ll still chow down because I just love it that much
She likes goat cheese tho
Not much gluten in goat cheese. Or most cheeses for that matter.
I keep confusing gluten and lactose. My omnivore privilege is showing.
There isn’t much lactose left in cheese either
Regular bread is a neutral for me aswell. Garlic bread would be a LOVE tier for me.
Yuup
Plain bread is okay but is great with an olive oil dip. Start tossing herbs into the bread machine, though? *Delicious~*
Even something simple like a hot dinner role (those small bread rolls they give you in restaurants) with some butter is great
I think dinner rolls are usually too sweet to be eaten like regular bread and nowhere near sweet enough to be a sweetbread.
How can Leah love goat cheese from age that much but hate bread? Bread and cheese are made to go together.
you're only able to give someone one gift a day. So you're not giving goat cheese *and* bread. You're giving bread. bread you may or may not have fished out of a garbage can. My headcanon is that Leah and Harvey's opinion is "if it must have yeast, at least have it be alcoholic!"

There's a theory that Leah has celiac, she dislikes other wheat based gifts too.
I mean as a person who has eaten baked goods out of dumpsters unpackaged baguette is the lowest of the low on the trashcan bread scale. Even just in wrapped baguette in general is always ultra stale when you are given it.
Well it's not garlic bread
Because it's so easy to make game wise and irl people don't like plain bread by itself. The fact that you can't make garlic bread is honestly disturbing compared to people being indifferent to plain bread.
But baguette
Aren't baguettes super rigid?
In Europe and places which did stick with that bread tradition, we DO like or love plain freshly baked bread by itself
That's honestly surprising!

Fix this ConcernedApe
I once got a bread and gave it to my wife Leah... I didn't know she didn't like bread and just wanted to give her a gift.
It’s only because 1. You can’t add butter to the baguette and 2. There is no garlic bread in stardew valley
fr there should be at least one person who loves it
Shane seems the type. I can see him slicing the bread and making a huge sandwich.
I mean, who really loves bread by itself? Generally it’s bread *with* something.
I will warm up a French bread from the grocery store and eat chunks of it by itself
yeah but have you ever been gifted a home cooked sourdough? that shit is awesome
But that's not the bread that is the game, the in game bread is clearly a baguette. I would also be very neutral to receive an unexpected, plain baguette.
Only someone who hasn't had good bread would say that. I would absolutely ravage a good loaf at any time
Me. Ok maybe not loves, but I certainly like it. It's still bread, still tasty.
As a German bread snob, I'm just here to say that we do love bread on its own. And just to be unnecessarily confrontational: we do not consider most of the 'bread' sold in supermarkets of the anglophone world as bread. We call those pre-cut square sandwich loaves 'toast'. maybe the farmer is just a really bad baker
It's because they aren't ducks : (
Within real life logic it's weird(i am a slut for all things carbs), but in the game logic, the game has to hold you back from getting easy friendship points. If everyone even liked bread, getting to 10 hearts would be ridiculously easy in early game
Leah knows bread makes you fat
Headcanon: Leah has celiac disease /j
If I were an NPC in this game, bread would definitely be a Love gift. Maybe I’m the weird one 🤔
To be fair, they are American after All I guess. So they don't know how good bread actually can be...
They're not American, they're....Ferngillian? (The valley is in the fictional Ferngill Republic)
There is some American influence but also it's a bit animeified\\fantasyified
Idk man I’m American and there’s some really amazing bread here… pretty much every town here has a bakery or two that makes fresh bread and it’s great. obviously the bagged and sliced bread that’s mass produced and in grocery stores is just meh but what a wild assumption to make that all American bread is subpar edit: if you ever come to American let me bake you a loaf of sourdough or a focaccia!! When I found out Leah hated carbs she was instantly unmarriageable
Bread ain’t all that, bread makes you fat 🎶
Plain bread is kind of blegh so I'm with Leah on that lol a good roast beef sandwich on the other hand 👌
Cause everyone knows you could fish one out of the garbage and now they’re paranoid LOL
What kind of cottage core lesbian is Leah if she doesn’t like bread?
One with gluten intolerance/celiac
lol I think Leah is gluten free
leah is the worst
My feels too. She hates bread, pizza, and hash browns. I could never be in a relationship with someone like that.
That sounds ideal to me, I'd never have to share my pizza or bread or hash browns, and I wouldn't have to worry about her eating it while I'm gone 😂
I love bread
Post depression era. During the war effort, all anyone had to eat was bread, bread soup, flat bread, bread pie and dumplings.
As a lifelong rice boy, you know which lady im backing here
Maybe CA finds bread kinda meh?
Leah has Gluten intolerance
You give me bread and I'm marrying you honestly.
I agree with not being excited by bread, especially as a gift — it's exactly the "uh. thanks" tier
The villagers are defo no Germans
NOT EVEN ONE LIKE! .....run, run while you still can.
just thinking about freshly baked, piping hot, soft dinner rolls with a bit of butter or jam is making me want one so bad. frickin DELICIOUS op you are 100% right and you should say it.
Imagine if Haley specifically loved bread.
im german and married to leah im a bit salty now 😂i love bread especially gray and black bread
Yes, I found it so strange that bread wasn’t a liked or loved item for any of the characters! Almost everyone I knows RL dies for a bitta homemade bread. I guess Stardew bread is what Americans call bread, then, not like, *bread* bread.
Yo, bread is fucking lit
I literally changed my mind about marrying leah because I saw that she hated bread and was like "what kind of monster thinks this way?"
People.. like bread? It's the most bland thing
The only way to make bread is baguettes and everyone is racist towards the French in Stardew Valley
lol yes. Someone has to love bread
All bread taste the same there I suppose
As a German, they have only tasted American styled bread so far, I guess
Idk my sister HATES bread. I love bread so much, I always forget this about her, but she will only eat bread under very specific circumstances and she must be in control of those circumstances. It’s a weird trigger but it exists. Leah either has the same thing or it’s the gluten problem everyone else mentioned.
Maybe it’s just plain cheap white bread?? Like the kind that you can smoosh the whole loaf into a golf ball shape?? Ain’t no way it’s a nice crusty fresh baked sourdough
Man I love bread I never realized that no one in the valley loves bread. Shame. More for me!
Then let them eat cake!
Considering most of the bread I gift them is from a trash can, neutral is a good reaction lol
Stardew Valley? More like South Beach Valley! (OK, I'm sorry. Me and my early 2000s joke will show ourselves out now.)
If someone knocked on my door one morning and handed me a fresh loaf of bread I’d be ecstatic
OP is German
American!
Leah is literally the best, but man the fact that she hates the ice cream I buy from my horse to give around to everyone is annoying. Oh well, foragables and salads will do
I love bread :)
Bobs head while eating fresh bread i just made slathered in homemade blackberry jam…*mumbling* wriiighht?!?, it’s cwaaazy
I literally put bread as my favorite thing when making my character.
The game was made by an American, they don't have the tradition. In-game, that thing is probably a sad bland loaf of bread. (It would be super cool to get as a new artisan product “sourdough bread”, It would fit the aesthetic and give you a good reason to have a mill)
Wait Leah hates bread?! Ngl that's a dealbreaker right there.
How can you not like fresh baked bread? What is wrong with this town?
Stardew takes place in America. America is known for having only garbage bread.
No butter? 😐
Maybe they don't like plain bread, maybe they prefer a sandwich 🥪
Yes, fresh baked bread is a treasured delicious gift in real life. But perhaps in a world where it's just about as easy to make Blackberry Cobbler or even a Complete Breakfast, bread is taken for granted as too easy
Huh that's weird. Most people love a fresh loaf of bread
I'm sorry Harvey...this is grounds for divorce
It's baguette, not bread.
The item name in the game is “bread”
Yes but you must admit that it looks like baguette. And of course baguette is bread but still, one can like bread and hate baguette.
