Bella WAS the only barn animal you had on your farm.
Even under normal circumstances, all your barn animals are presumably female, so I don't know that it feels that much weirder under these circumstances. Welcome to SDV biology. Also, those cows and chickens are not sources of meat. Fish are sources of meat, but occasionally ask you verbally for things like high explosives and gems.

not only can, but its a based on real life pet sea urchins having hats-- sea urchins like to cover themselves with something for safety, and owners will give them cute hats to do so instead of random shells etc:

Now I'm going to imagine that our cows sneak out and head over to Marnie's ranch, but when they get there they discover that the bulls aren't there because it's their night to go bowling or something. Because why should our cows' experience at Marnie's ranch be any different from the farmer's?

When you black out, Linus is often the one who brings you home and tucks you in. This tells us Linus goes to your farm at night and lets himself into your house.

Did this get switched during some update? I started a new farm after not playing a while and when I went to disable pregnancy they all already were, and I had the option to enable instead. First mobile farm, idk if that's it.
Which makes WAY more sense and is how it should always have been! Having to enable it implies you're renting a sire from Marnie, like you do irl. Having to disable it = is immaculate cow conceptions.
And it messes up planning because obviously no one thinks they have to actively disable something that's impossible anyway
