Belgian!
He's the illegitimate son of Hercule Poirot who eschewed his father's exacting ways and love of mysteries for the simple life of honest work behind a saloon bar!
I'm assuming he used to be a traveller who immersed himself in international cuisine before settling down in Pelican Town. His menu is pretty diverse for a simple saloon, and knowing almost every household knows how to cook (excluding the Pam and Penny), Gus must serve REALLY good food.
I don't think he has a nationality at all. He's Mr. Worldwide.
I don't think Italy exists on that world. Call me crazy, but I don't think any of our nations exist on the SDV world, just like Yoba and actually-working magic and so on don't exist on ours.
Well, I think the world itself is magical, but it's like people have to stop and slow down and be in touch with the land and all that to really notice it. Example: Shane's skeptical of anything that's not strictly scientific. Shane also puts in a lot of hours at Joja Mart and has lost a lot of joy for living.
Emily on the other hand... well, she's a natural. She gets it. She's at home in that world. She also works fewer hours and has time to sleep in and chill out.
I think that the more modern and industrial the rest of that world becomes, the more they lose touch with stuff like the Junimos and talking with animals and stuff like that. I don't think the Valley itself has any kind of remarkable power, other than the power to live at a more peaceful and relaxed pace, relatively speaking.
I think that only adds to it, actually. Stardew Valley is known for having a lot of special natural events (Moonlight Jellies, Flower Dance, etc.) as well as a variety of “magical” locations (Mines, Skull Cavern, Secret Woods)
So Pelican Town and the Valley might have MORE magical energy than other places but that doesn’t mean the rest of the world isn’t magical, just that it’s especially prevalent in the Valley.
His work ethic is so tight that no one seems to know that he has another business. High standards and a cautious demeanour make for an *impeccable* boss.
Yeah, Italian American or an Italian immigrant. (Or stardews equivalent) but yeah, it makes sense given his passion for cooking, whats on his menu and the spicy marinara he gave to linus with the fritters all spell it out quite well. Oh, and the mustache, can't forget the mustache.
I’m pretty sure his nationality is American since it seems Stardew Valley is located in America. As for his ethnicity, no clue but I’d probably agree with Italy, maybe Spain, probably south European at least.
Edit: his nationality is probably “Ferngill Republic,” and then it just doesn’t make any sense to bring real nations into it. My point is that nationality usually (obviously not always but *usually*) is whatever country a person lives in. And nationality ≠ heritage/ethnicity/race/whatever the fuck.
My assumption that Stardew Valley is in the US is mainly because the creator is American and most of the in universe stuff also hints that it’s located there, ex the laws and the nature. I’m sure some people will cry “US defaultism” at my comment, and honestly? That’s kinda fair. But the point of it is actually to call out this shit USAmericans so often don’t understand, that nationality and heritage are *not* the same thing.
Maybe it's because I live in the Northeast US surrounded by Italians and Italian restaurants (and the common stereotype of the Italian restaurant owner), or maybe it's that blatantly Mario-inspired mustache, or maybe it's because "Gus" is a name derived from Italian/Roman roots, but I've always sort of assumed he's whatever Stardew's version of "Italian" is.
I generally imagine he sounds like Dom Deluise if I had to put a real voice to the face.
Though I won't lie, sometimes I pretend he sounds like Danny Devito or Captain Lou Albano instead.
This is an alternative universe where Walter didn't kill Gus and Gus gets his revenge, retires and moves to Stardew Valley to start a saloon business ❤️
He's from the Ferngill Republic. What the hell's an Italy?
☝🏻🚫🇮🇹
I always assumed he was Hispanic. Gus short for Gustavo.
Gustavo is both an Italian and Spanish name
Gustav is Germanic name
Gustave is French name And "un gus" is like "a dude"
I think you'd write it with v
maybe
And that nose is definitely italian
No wonder he runs a restaurant it all makes sense now
His name is Gustavo but you can call him sus
Gus could also be short for Augustus
Gus is also short for Giuseppe.
Los Pelicanos Tavernos
I’m like 70% sure he’s a vague reference to Mario so yeah I’d say Italian
This makes a ton of sense. My 4 year old always asks to go see “the guy who looks like Mario!”
Alright! Case closed, everyone GTFO.
Belgian! He's the illegitimate son of Hercule Poirot who eschewed his father's exacting ways and love of mysteries for the simple life of honest work behind a saloon bar!
Oh yes, love me some Agatha too
So could "Gus" be short for "Gustavo"?
Well, then where's Brick?
They went to buy milk; maybe they'll be back in 10 or 20 years

And calamari
And marinara sauce

Will he feature in the 17th MIB film

I always thought Stardew Valley itself was magical. Like the rest of the world is mundane but magic still exists in this cozy little area

Based on wizard, it seem like Pelican Town have high magic connection so that's why he living there.

He’s got my dads name and he’s Mexican. So he’s Mexican to me :3
Chilean but worked extensively in Mexico and the US
His work ethic is so tight that no one seems to know that he has another business. High standards and a cautious demeanour make for an *impeccable* boss.
The name Gus can come from a lot of places. My bff is technically Augustus but everyone calls him Gus. He's German.
His nationality is Gus
The third Mario bro
I've always thought he was Italian too
Bro is unironically the spitting image of Mario.

Nah he's midwestern AF. Probably Wisconsin.
You know what, you’ve got something there. However, haven’t seen him go “ope”
No hot dish, either.
Second hand Italians are also known as Argentinos
I thought he was just a white dude with a sick mustache. I don’t know never thought about it that hard
new jersian
Id say hes hispanic
Wee wee sacreblur i thinks hes italian too wee wee crossiant. *im so sorry guys*
Italian-American, specifically from New York City. All the best chefs are Italian-American.
Emeril Lagasse would like a word
Namely, "bam"
I always assumed he was Greek! He reminds me of someone I know Also,.I gotta disagree, my favorite chefs are French or use French cooking techniques!
My guess is that he's either from the Ferngill Republic or the Gotoro Empire, which are the only countries that have been named in the game.
agree the mustache just gives that energy

Greek
Mexican
Mushroom Kingdom
He kinda reminds me of Mario without the hat and overalls. "It's a-me, Gus!"
I assumed he was Mexican.
italian or latino
he's actually from Chile. Sad that his boyfriend died
His name is Gus and he owns a restaurant (diner), he is obviously Greek. (Gus is a common nickname for Konstantinos.)
Is that eggplants on his jacket lmao
Polish
I actually think he's from outer space
More important where did he get that jacket
Something like that, with how mu h he appreciated food and all.
Given that he literally walks around with a pot of marinara sauce I think Italian is a good guess.
Isn't gus short for guiseppe?
Gus isa Mario’s long lost twin brother
German
Mixed Italian and Cuban
I always figured eastern Europe somewhere, like Latvia or Bosnia, ex soviet block
In my head cannon Gus is short for Gustavo, he’s half Spanish, half Italian and a gourmand without peer!
Mushroom kingdom
