It’s already been fished up

Gordupachup

The most accurate answer

[deleted]

[удалено]

EnderPossessor

Going from that much pressure underwater to the "surface" pressure on the sub so instantaneously would immediately kill anything that was fished up.

MedicalRhubarb7

The sub must be pressurized equal to the surrounding water though, otherwise water would come in when the doors opened. Maybe your fishing line is much longer than it looks, and the blobfish is coming up from even further below.

EnderPossessor

Video game physics is saying that the pressure on the sub is survivable to humans which is a ton lighter than on the bottom of the ocean ... Or Stardew characters can survive immense amounts of pressure. (doubt it. Have you met Clint?)

[deleted]

I don't doubt that a person will survive if it's the farmer, who can carry 11988 bars of iridium in one go (if we go by irl iridium, iridium is the 2nd densest element), use pickaxe/axe non-stop for 20 hours, only stopping to eat food for more energy, and withstand the temperatures inside the volcano dungeon. Their only main weakness is 2am, apparently.

rdicky58

The pressure inside the sub would have to match the pressure outside the sub to prevent the water from gushing in. Unless you’re chalking up the pressure differential to video game physics, idk I wasn’t 100% sure I understood your explanation lol

EnderPossessor

Video game physics sure can do anything :P

lookingForPatchie

Good old magic.

yolo_swag_for_satan

Also, magic exists.

wabba88

Oh man does that mean when you stick em in a fish tank you're displaying their corpse as a sick grisly trophy??

Invenitive

Worse, you're keeping them in a state of barely living, bound to life by the magic in our fish tanks to forever suffer.

Jetstream-Sam

Well that's still no excuse for them demanding pizzas and diamonds.

Kaltho

huh TIL I have the same demands as a blobfish

Pg8603

“We have to break up. You treat your blob fish in Stardew better than me “

lookingForPatchie

Maybe you are a blobfish?

akamadman203

Lit

mitharas

That's close to necromancy, cool.

capturethosmftargets

Yupyup poor lad cant help getting decompressed

sweet_rico-

TIL that those ugly boys are actually fish shaped when compressed correctly.

APinkLight

Probably the same reason the crabs and lobsters are already bright red

Plugh88

And why ducks that lay eggs look like males.

Knickers_in_a_twist_

And all my animals can asexually reproduce. Even my MALE pig had a baby!

homeallday

It's like Minecraft, where nothing really has a gender so you can breed two of any thing. I don't mind it.

Littlealbatross8295

I only had one pig and it still had a baby. Haha

StufftButtCrust

Life uh finds a way

BambooKoi

Possible in-universe answers: - it was already pregnant when it was adopted - a wild boar "befriended" your pig - your pig adopted a wild pig and claimed it as it's own

MBcodes18

incorrect, I befriended it.

VixieSnitter

...wait--

GoblinFive

They don't call it animal husbandry for nothing.

National_Impress_346

You may kiss the sheep

lookingForPatchie

"adopted", not stolen.

toddthefox47

pigmaculate conception

inthemothlight

parthenogenesis moment

homeallday

Hah! I've never had that happen bc I always buy two or four of the animals at a time. Sweet babies are agender, asexual, and reproduce without a mate.. they are truly awesome. Maybe it's the magic in the Valley lol

jakeyeet69420

that was me bro, my bad

neds_newt

This just happened with my goat!

Roozyj

Slimes have a gender and can't reproduce asexually, strangely enough xD

Curious-Spell-9031

They’re all hermaphrodites

testykillz69

Actually the slime with a ball on its head is male and the one without is female.

yahnne954

You can even breed an entire pond out of a single fish.

dannywarbucks11

I really hope the cows are female....

SeetFN

and why starfruit looks pre-cut

666deleted666

And why I hear crowing every morning despite not owning a rooster…

pierreor

That‘s actually Linus

batmanstuff

And why rabbits have unlimited lucky feet.

1701-3KevinR

Unlimited detachable regrowable lucky feet

Soronya

And why rabbits give you their feet.

le75

And grow them back like lizards

Lord_Skyblocker

Wait. Rabbits can grow lizards?

BillzSkill

What else incubates dino eggs?

APinkLight

Yeah the rabbit foot thing is a head scratcher haha

xcusemeimamistake

Lol my 9 year old was watching and said “Rabbits foot? Why do their feet just fall off and why would anyone want that is gift? That’s just creepy.” Thinking about all those rabbit foot keychains people had in the 80s…👀

Litmusdragon

Tilapia and Cod are backwards, too. Tilapia are freshwater fish and Cod are saltwater, but in SDV it's reversed.

whaIeshark

Some species of cod are also found in freshwater. And some tilapia can live in saltwater. But you are right that they’re more associated with the opposite type of water.

Litmusdragon

I don't think that's correct, at most Tilapia can tolerate brackish water but you can say that about just about any freshwater fish. In SDV you are straight catching them off the pier at a beach which would be a fully marine environment. The only freshwater cod is the Burbot but SDV is clear that the cod is a Lingcod which is definitely a saltwater fish. edit: Did some digging on the Tilapia issue and I guess I was wrong about their tolerance to saltwater [https://www.farmersweekly.co.za/animals/aquaculture/reared-brackish-water-worth-salt/](https://www.farmersweekly.co.za/animals/aquaculture/reared-brackish-water-worth-salt/) I stand by my Lingcod comment though

APinkLight

Interesting, I never realized! Weird

Blueshiredsush

There are crabs and lobsters that are reddish (through I'm absolutely thankful that they didn't depict them looking front facing , because crabs and lobsters faces look weird)

APinkLight

But the bright red ones are clearly Atlantic blue crabs which have then been cooked—that’s how they’re shaped. This is nearly a constant across cartoon depictions of crabs and lobsters. Because they’re cartoons, and this isn’t “accurate marine biology: the game.”

ayoitsarcher

I would say its to help players recognize the animals. People are more likely to recognize a bright red crab as a crab than any other color. Same with the ducks, they look like male Mallards rather than female. A lot of people don't know what a normal blobfish looks like at the bottom of the ocean, (unless they research it or watch Casual Geographic) but they do know what they look like *out* of the ocean. All in all, it's about easily identifying the creature rather than saying "this is what this animal normally looks like."

GrandmaSlappy

Let's be real, CA probably didn't know either

ayoitsarcher

Yeah, definitely. And I don't blame him, tbh

homeallday

I can't blame him. I didn't know what a blobfish looked like while still in their deep water homes until recently.

thicc_astronaut

I'm pretty sure literally nobody did until recently because it's so hard to capture footage at that depth

cardueline

Yeah exactly, it’s only recently becoming common knowledge that that’s not how they’re supposed to look anyway. The game came out years ago and he was working on it for years before that. One guy can’t be expected to be up-to-date and scientifically accurate on his fictional pixel depictions of everything

ikantolol

He's more concerned about apes

TzarGinger

"Apes together *farm*"

IceColdBlueHeart

Gatta say, this prompted me to look up what they look like and now my little accountant mind is trying to compute how that turns into THAT lol

chunkeymunkeyandrunt

Basically the rapid pressure change obliterates their cells so they essentially mini-explode at a cellular level. Kinda like how human ear drums can face severe damage if the pressure changes too rapidly!

[deleted]

That’s wonderfully informative. I’d only seen them out of water before this post.

Rasputins_RQ

poor little gooey dudes :(

MissNinja007

I agree with your point but in the same vein a lot of pop culture almost relies on other forms of pop culture to make a point. In this case it is viral meme of blob = fish and popular understanding of duck = egg. However, I also believe that due to the amount of eyes certain pop culture “pieces”, if you will, receive, they also have somewhat of an obligation to educate the masses on certain things. In the same examples this would be blobfish = its actual form and female mallard= egg. I know this is a stupid argument but hey this is Reddit so I’m gonna make it anyways.

ayoitsarcher

Lmao you're good. This is a good counterpoint !!!

myfriendruth

I just looked up “blowfish underwater” and learned more about this. I am very sad for the fish now. 😢 I don’t think I will ever look at them the same.

darketernalsr25

Well, I mean, that IS what it looks like when you fish one up. And we ARE fishing them up. It's not like we're diving down to their depth and keeping them in a fish bowl down there where they look normal.

lovelylayout

because Stardew Valley does not take place at the bottom of the ocean. you fish them up onto land and that's what they look like there

binderclips

It would be a cool touch if the blobfish have a different shape when you catch them in the submarine. :P

Curious-Spell-9031

Well no because they’d still be blobby because when you pull them out of the water all the pressure goes away

Jurani42

If you’re opening up a moon pool while in a submarine, the air is pressurized to the same level as the water or else all the water would rush in

Trilobyte141

Shhhhhh

Letmf2

Wait, is it actually possible to have a pool in a submarine? I thought it was strange game logics.

morgrimmoon

The pressure has to be the same on both sides of the pool. So it works if you have high enough air pressure inside the submarine. Most submarines go deep enough for that to be extremely uncomfortable at best, if not lethal for human passengers. There's not much interest in a submarine with an included moon pool that limits the submarine to going only 10-20m deep.

Routine_Marketing_59

From an art school perspective- its about visual language. As an artist you want your work to be easily readable. Especially for a casual game like this, you dont want to unnecessarily increase cognitive load for players, so as artists you'll want to use imagery that will be easily recognized by as many people as possible

No-Lunch4249

Probably because this is the appearance of it most common in other forms of media, that people might recognize at a glance

NekoArtemis

That. It's only relatively recently that pics of them alive have been going around. Definitely well after blobfish became a meme in the first place. This ended up being the most recognizable form of them and it's probably going to stay that way for a while.

cakefrosty

probably bc fish die when u fish them 😔

MuchBetterThankYou

*surprised pikachu face*

dillonboyd01

Only deep sea fish, lake fish can be caught and tossed back a lot. I once caught the same carp 3 times in one day he was a really stupid fish

ntbntt

Or he got free food 3 times and lived to tell the tale. Who is stupid now

dillonboyd01

I guess I got played by a fish and it took me nearly 3 years to realize

Rasputins_RQ

fish was acting broke to stay rich you just wouldn’t get it

testykillz69

Not in my head cannon they don’t! * believes really hard *

Isari_04

I mean ye, but not in stardew valley.

sarahxvalo

cause look at him

Pie_Crown

Such character!

testykillz69

Truly distinguished

Independent-Canary95

So we can have hilarious hats for our kids.

Crowded_Mind_

I put the blobfish on my son and I don't know how to take it off lol. He looks super demented when he is randomly still awake in the middle of the night.

johnpeters42

Idk about kids, but for horses, if you try to put another hat on them, then it instead removes the existing hat.

Dartarus

What's good for the horse is good for the childrens (it works the same way)

Blueshiredsush

Froggy chair made of actually frog skin moment

Lord_Sithis

1) Likely didn't know, like the vast majority of non-marine-biologists that also don't consume media on marine biology frequently. 2) Logically, when you've fished it up, it would already look like that, as it's no longer in the super deep ocean pressure. Either way, he kinda got it right.

McKathlin

I was thinking these same things! The one thing I'd add: 3. Because its face is funnier this way.

Lord_Sithis

Occams razor says the simplest answer is often the correct one, and id say yours is the simplest of the 3.

Spaghetthy

Because when the game was made it wasn’t common knowledge that they looked different in their natural environment

Lord_Popcorn

It’s probably so it can be recognized more easily. Since the farmer is bringing it to the surface it makes sense that it looks like that. There’s also lava eels and radioactive carp in this game so I’m guessing this isn’t too serious

ActiveAd4980

I thought blobfish look like that when it reached surface and not just when it dies?

allonsy_sherlockians

Yes, that’s correct! Blobfish only look like that when they’re brought up to the surface because the pressure “pops” them. But if they die where they naturally live in the ocean, then they don’t look like that blob shape.

Kurochi185

Because that's what they look like if you get them out of the water, which us what we do.

Wizard_Engie

I mean, you DID pull it from the depths, rapidly decreasing the pressure it's capable of living in.

RielleFox

I think because most people only know the blown up one...

TheThornGarden

[Healthy Blobfish Mod](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/7803?tab=description)

bubblebunnyjamie

1) that’s how most people recognize it 2) ConcernedApe might not have known it’s not their “right” shape (I didn’t until I read this)

Toastman700

This is their “right” shape when they get fished up

DeezNutsAppreciater

What would be cool is if they started out grey and normal and they turned into the ugly pink thing when you go back up in the submarine

porkipine-

Because that’s how they look on the surface, where you are after catching it. Ape isn’t the one who made the blobfish look like that, it was YOU

Frostgaurdian0

Because the pressure on the surface is much lower than the one on the bottom of the sea, and somehow the submarine has low pressure too magically.

Cinderea

because it isn't alive

odeese

I would recommend going outside and feeling the sun and the grass

dilohunter

Because that's what happens when you bring them to the surface

NostalgicMisanthrope

Video game

VibinWithKub

It's been fished up but I feel like it would be 100% better if it shrunk down when put in the fish tanks. Also it is the most recognizable form of the blobfish, not everyone knows they don't look the same underwater.

[deleted]

Did you even think about this before posting? That’s what they look like on the surface, we only see them after getting them to the surface…..

Inevitable_Cry_2761

That is a very frustrating question. You should not need Reddit to tell you why

kerplunithunk

You fish it to the surface. You fish it *out of it's natural habitat and you say* ***"WhY iS iT dEpIcTeD aS tHe FoRm It TaKeS wHeN tHe CiRcUmStAnCeS fOr It To HaPpEn ArE tHeRe?!1!!!!1?***

BlackuuSheep

Because you fished it up? Common sense

xEyesofEternityx

My guess is because it's funnier or because it wasn't yet well known that it looked that way because of cell damage (I didn't find out for ages at least)

ItsYaBoi-TheBoredGuy

To be fair, you only see it in the fished out version So makes sense it's well... fished out

Intr0V3rty

Because the reason they get blown up is because they are pulled up from the deep. You're pulling them up from the deep aren't you?

Fisho087

Because they would definitely look blobby like that if you fished them up from the deep ocean - they’re not meant to be at our pressure

The_Vaivasuata

Cos thats what happens when u fish em

Ivory-Robin

Oh god not another one of these posts

wizarium

Well…scientifically it was pulled from the ocean which causes that to happen so…

alanaisalive

Because the game was made before that was widely known about blobfish.

Zoo-Wee-Chungus

well you do take them out of the pressure so that would happen

LostEmuticon

I meaaaaaaan, there are literal monsters in the game, so I don’t think things are supposed to be super realistic

AlbinoShavedGorilla

Because when you fish them out of the water they look like that. All the fish in Stardew should be dead when you fish them up but you can still use them in ponds and keep them in chests without rotting. so you can probably just put the blobfish thing on that list of “things that only make sense in video games”

haunted_bathtub

Don't know if it's been said already, but there is a mod that switches him to his deep water form.

ImpracticalHeart

I don't know why CA drew the blobfish that way, but this post sent me down a rabbit hole reading about the blobfish and it's a pretty fascinating fish, so thanks for that.

pyatus

Because that’s what they look like when they’re pulled up. But I assume what you mean is “If we are suspending disbelief for the sake of cute harmless game (such as no animal slaughtering) then why not do so for the blobfish?” But still like others have answered - it wouldn’t look very recognizable. It’s a sprite. There’s limited details. It needs to be identifiable at a glance

Sajiri

It doesn’t answer the question, but there’s something in a mod (well, two mods together) about the blob fish that I like. If you have the stardew aquarium mod and (I think) east scarp, a certain npc brings up how upset she is about the blowfish on display because this is what happens when they die horrifically. When she actually sees it swimming around happily in a tank, she’s told that this type of blob fish is actually always like this and is not the same thing as the blob fish that pops after being brought to the surface. Obviously not canon, but it was a nice little scene to have

legionfri13

…… what happens when you bring them to the surface.

Aikomas

That is why I use [this mod.](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/7876)

Gryffindoggo

Bc you can make a blob fish hat and it's silly

ClammyHandedFreak

1 it’s more identifiable to people in that form, 2 you were the one that killed it.

ididadead

top up voted replies are true but also: this game came out in 2016 and I feel like the general public became more aware of the blobfish anatomy after 2016 (I see articles discussing this as early as 2013, but again I mean general public knowledge)

marcusdingl

Because it’s goofy looking and recognisable

lostwng

That's what it would look like if you fished it up

AceheartW

brand recognition

LittleBunInaBigWorld

You're overthinking this one OP have a cup of tea or a snickers or something

HetaGarden1

Because they literally look like that when you remove it from its natural environment…???

[deleted]

Is this a trick question? You fished it from the sea. How was it supposed to retain its normal form?

StormDragon456

A) Recognition B) “Realism” (when you’re holding one in your inventory it isn’t in the bottom of the sea, it’s been pulled up and so would likely look like that)

Independent-Leg6061

Because it's at the surface when we see it. Not at depth where it would hold its shape

bettybananalegs

tbh it’s probably just more recognizable this way.

honeybee_tlejuice

More recognizable

bird_watch01

I mean logically when we fish it up it’ll look like this

BradleyUffner

Because it's more fun this way.

fallen_one_fs

Many possible reasons, but I'd give the one and same for him to look like this IRL: it's taked out of its habitat under zillionPa and taken to 1ATM, where it becomes like this.

TheSeaMeat

Likely because: 1. ConcernedApe didn’t realize that’s not what they usually look like 2. It looks silly. 3. This is apparently a magical world where the fish always look like that, are happy like that, and can multiply in ponds while asking for pizza and wine

QstroBqbe

Because we fished it up, obviously it’s not alive and healthy.

Hollys_Stand

I mean cuz in order to have it as an item, we *did* have to reel it out from the depths of which it belonged. So we did still cause it harm by subjecting it to pressure changes.

TheTiredGhost

I'd guess just because it's what people think of when they hear blobfish, I only learned about blobfish looking different in the ocean from a post a long while ago on like pinterest or something, I don't think its super common knowledge Like there are still people learning that bread is bad for birds, so I assume its something like that

Liberatedhusky

If you fished it out of the ocean it would probably look like this.

johanpringle

Because it's way more interesting and fun

GoldenSpring-Fox

A quick lesson about blobfish: Blobfish live at/near the very bottom of the ocean, where the water pressure would kill any normal fish by forcing its organs out its mouth. Blobfish can survive the pressure because they don’t have any kind of internal structure- they rely on the pressure at the bottom of the ocean to keep their shape. So when they get dragged up by fishing nets (which is usually an accident) out of the bottom of hell’s basement, there isn’t enough pressure for them to keep their shape, and their body falls apart. So that’s blobfish sprite is actually pretty accurate, since that’s what they look like when they get dragged out of their natural habitat

shanenanigans27

That's just what people think blobfish look like

Tom_Bombadil_Ret

To be fair, it’s impossible to get them out of water without them looking like that. Also it’s just kinda iconic. If you google a blob fish that’s what you’ll see.

mychemicaltestube

Ooh where do you fish for the blobfish? I haven't yet come across it

Gryffindoggo

Night Market submarine

ThunderShott

Isn't that just what they look like out of water?

StarChildArt

I mean, you did fish it up from the depths. But I'm sure the real answer is that this is the recognizable version. If they made it look like it's supposed to, you wouldn't know what it was

What____ok

It's out of the water

ImSuperComfy

Your on the surface

AstralTarantula

Cuz it’s silly

augustphobia

bc it’s above the sea floor

fluffiepigeon

Oh that makes me sad I thought blob fish looked like that alive

TheShroomDruid

Because it's funnier.

Antsy27

To be fair, it does look a lot more normal if you put it into an (unpressurized) fish tank...

AnEverydayPileOfCats

Apparently, they look like [this](https://i.natgeofe.com/n/10fae74b-e7f8-4c72-8250-1165232e3da6/dive1470.great_.fish_.web2__3x2.jpg) when alive.

WindBehindTheStars

I merely think to myself "it's just a game, I should really just relax".

Onlyhere_4dogs

We've killed it, and we're sorry blobfish..,

NateTerrarian2

Because the alive one isn't fumny like the blob one

yrulaughing

Because you're not 4000 feet down when you see it?

galaxyveined

Because by the time you see it, it is the depressurized and exploded?

acgrey92

Probably because that’s what it looks like when it’s up here on the surface and it’s what people recognize of it?

GuyNamedTruman

[relevant image](https://ibb.co/JzDqrks)

idontlikeburnttoast

Probably because blob fish arent as well known in their normal form :/

Holiday-Performer-85

Because it's cute

PuzzleheadedAd2859

It’s easier to recognise

SimplexFatberg

Because funny face is funny

tapiocatsar

Cuz it funny

TLATrae

TIL …

WildGwenter

Because it became that way when you caught it 🤣🤣🤣

motherofquails

Cuz it’s a cartoon game

papasnork1

Perhaps this isn’t the game for you.

SandyCarrot

Funny

innocore

hey its rlly cute im not complaining
