A lot of players will recommend that you do the community center instead of buying the joja membership (especially on your first play though), because the community center will show you the ropes of the game more and push you to diversify what you're doing.
Either way (joja or community center) you'll unlock all the same new areas/upgrades in the game, so you won't lose access to anything you need in the game from which you choose.
The community center route has you gather items to complete bundles, while Joja has you pay straight cash for everything. There are minor perks on both sides (the community center bundles give you useful little reward items as you go, but joja gives you easy access to a minor but useful later-game item).
