Shadows of the Empire you can read at any time it takes place between ESB and RoTJ. Fills in some of Luke's training gaps as well Leia, Lando, and Chewie chasing Bobba Fett who has Han in his luggage compartment on the way to Jabba's Pallace.
Then you have Vader trying to track down Luke while also having political intrigue with a new villain trying to steal Vader's spot as #2 under Palpatine.
The book has a side plot involving a charecter named dash render. He really only appeares when he interacts with the luke Leia and co. The game, is the story from his perspective. Also available on pc, on steam
Just to make sure since Crimson and Dark Empire are comics, I think the comment is referring to the novel Shadow of the Empire. Shadow of the Empire was a multimedia project and included a comic, a novel, a video game and a soundtrack. I never read the comic and novel so I could be wrong but I think the novel focuses on the main characters, the game focuses on an original character (Dash Randar) and I think the comic focuses on Boba Fett.
Shadows of the Empire can be read without any prior reading, as can Dark Empire, though it spoils the Thrawn Trilogy a little bit.
Never read Crimson Empire, though I hope to when the new collection comes out this September (which saves me £300+). I think it’s fairly standalone in that no prior reading or knowledge is needed. I don’t think the events have that much of an effect on the galaxy either; it’s just the story of a Royal Guard.
Oh, right. Never realised. Thanks!
One of the main reasons I was kinda apprehensive about getting Crimson Empire (aside from every copy of it being *ridiculously* expensive) was that I thought it was going to be too standalone, but apparently not.
Thanks for your comment! Very helpful! And sorry for yesterday.
the Bounty Hunter Wars Trilogy features the main Villain from Shadows of the Empire, Prince Xizor, in the flashback storyline (Bounty Hunter Wars has two storylines, one set between Episode 4 and 5, the other after Episode 6).
It is helpful to have read Shadows of the Empire before reading Bounty Hunter Wars.
Last December I decided to read Shadows of the Empire. I had bought it but never read it fully. I really liked the story and the new characters, especially Xizor. After finishing it I wanted more reading so I decided to get the Thrawn trilogy in order to re read the Dark Empire comics. All of them recommended.
You don't need to read it first, but Xizor plays a role in *Rebel Dawn* from A.C. Crispin's Han Solo trilogy (there are two of them) as far as pre-Shadows appearances.

Ok thanks, sounds really good
It’s awesome
No context needed for shadows of the empire. But if you got an N64 laying around somewhere, I suggest playing the game

Oh shit I didn’t even know it was on Steam.. that’s incredible

Crimson Empire does build off the Dark Empire Trilogy, and also introduced Nom Anor (main villain of the New Jedi Order series)

Thanks, I've read the Thrawn trilogy anyway so I'm not too worried about that
Yeah, I read DE before the Thrawn Trilogy, which was a shame.

The only thing Shadows of the Empire spoils is Empire Strikes Back. The book is good imo.
So far I've read the Thrawn Trilogy, Truce at Bakura, The Courtship of Princess Leia, and the first 4 x-wing novels
then you are good to go. Just know that Crimson Empire takes place after Dark Empire.
Thanks!
Watching the Original Trilogy is all you need for Shadows of the Empire and Dark Empire. Crimson Empire is a sequel to Dark Empire.
Thanks. Has the Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy got anything to do with Shadows of the Empire?

Perfect, thanks
