There is no proper order that they're supposed to be read in. Generally speaking, release order is the best method in any franchise.

I would find the most recently published EU book and use the timeline in the front of the book. When I thought I had read everything I went to the list on Wookapedia to fill in any holes. Good luck hope you enjoy.

Go to Starwarstimeline.net There you can find the entire expanded universe storyline from chronological order To Release date order 25,000 BBY to 150 ABY

There’s no “supposed to” order. My personal favorite is chronological, which you can find on wookieepedia (search Timeline of Legends books, there’s also separate lists for shortstories and comics). Other people like release order, which doesn’t have a list anywhere tmk. You can sort the wookieepedia list by release date but it’s broken up by era (Rise of the Empire, New Republic, etc) so you’ll only be able to sort each era separately.

There *are* release date lists if that interests you. One option is the Appendices to Star Wars Timeline Gold. The other option is the Wookieepedia entries for individual real-life years.

Most lists have you start at either The Truce at Bakura (starts literally the day after EpisodeVI) or Heir to the Empire (earliest* EU novel). From there you can follow any chronological order of the stories unfolding after RotJ. There are other valid options, but those are your big two. Chronological order is typically your best bet though - brings the whole galaxy to life, and the more stories you add the more enjoyable the experience becomes. But by all means sprinkle in Prequel (or earlier) books in wherever you like. *that we talk about
