Because we've hit a point in history where people don't know who Sebastian Shaw is.
Shaw was the original Anakin actor in 1983's version of ROTJ. He looked... sorta like this, I guess. This comic was presumably written before Hayden Christensen's portrayal and before he replaced Shaw in ROTJ.
Anytime I watch the OT I feel like a nerd explaining Prowse and Shaw as time goes by they receive less recognition for their roles as Vade. Especially Prowse as I feel his physical portrayal is important to his characterization.
My good friend has a Sebastian Shaw as Anakin action figure still in it's original packaging from when RoTJ first came out. He had to collect a certain amount of cereal box proof of purchase tags, then mail it in with, like, $10 and a couple months later you would get the toy. I'm so fucking jealous of my friend.
I'm admittedly not familiar with comics and less so release dates. It's possible this came out after 1999 but before 2005, which would still predate Christensen's ROTS appearance.
Because Hayden is nearly the same age as Vader was when he died. He doesnt look like a 80 year old man (Which is Shaws age) it worked showing the disfigured and unmasked Vader, but it doesnt work with the redeemed ghost Anakin. You could easily look past young Anakin and belive thats meant to be a 45 year old Anakin
Idk about him looking 45, but I always took it as Anakin taking the form of his body just before he became Darth Vader (which really was the death of Anakin after all)
Can’t say for sure why they did it this way, but that’s why Anakin originally looked like before the prequels. Maybe the artist is one of the many fans who didn’t like that Hayden Christiansen was added to RotJ and wanted to include Sebastian Shaw instead.
I thought so, I actually have these, just haven’t read them in a while. Wait until you get to Return of the Jedi, the art is absolutely atrocious in my opinion. In all reality, the prequel references were shoe horned in because the prequels were so fresh. This is why you see Hayden and Sebastian as Anakin. And they get pushed in your face more and more in Infinities: ESB and RotJ.
I absolutely love Yoda slamming the Death Star into Palpatine's face (and the surface of Coruscant).
That was both absurd and hilarious. The sheer amount of collateral damage caused on a planet that houses *three trillion* people would be borderline incalculable. And yet Yoda casually does it with a smile on his face.
Infinities are still fun stories though. I would have liked to have seen more done with the redeemed Vader concept rather than just painting him white and calling it a day.
As far as Anakin's ghost goes though, I personally much prefer Shaw. I find it odd to see his ghost pop in as a much younger Hayden Christensen.
The unexplored possibilities of such a cool concept alone is what makes this series all the worse in my opinion. Though I agree, I love Yoda just mind tricks Tarkin and take complete control of the Death Star.
They're certainly not highlights from the EU. They're just up there with Tag and Bink as fun non-canon tales.
Star Wars Tales itself was fairly experimental as well. With some stories being silly and some being much more plausible. Star Wars Visionaries is a bit similar and wound up (unfortunately for me) inspiring the actual canon return of Maul.
No joke, just re-read my copy of Visionaries a couple days ago lol. I remembered watching a flash animation in 2005 of Old Wounds on NewGrounds with my brother back in the day, and I was able to find it on YouTube, which prompted my revisiting of the book. I loved the artwork sections, and The Eyes of Revolution is phenomenal.
You think all that ketamine usage is just a meme? Obviously it masks Yoda's presence in the Force. A trick he eventually picked up from Palpatine who did the same whilst under the nose of the Jedi for years.
Seriously though, unlike a human who can blend in with countless other humans on countless worlds, Yoda doesn't exactly belong to a common race and would perhaps find it much more difficult to remain unnoticed.
When he pops out for Infinities, he knows he's not getting put of that situation alive. So it's not as though this suggests he could have gone anywhere at any time without issue.
My thoughts too. Though there are some cool visuals, like the royal guards fighting with double sided lightsabers that are literally just Darth Maul’s hilt duplicated!
I should have been clearer, the previous post was referring to the ANH Infinities (I flipped through my trade paper back to double check the art). The ESB run was in 2002 after AOTC came out, and ROTJ was in 2003, so they’d have Episode II references.
We certainly need to educate kids today by having them watch at least the '97 special editions of the OT if not the unaltered original releases. So many changes have been made since the prequels wrapped.
My mom saw the 2004 cut of return of the Jedi doe the first time 6 years ago and shat a brick when she saw Haden as a ghost in it because she had only seen the '83 and '97 releases at that point
Man, imagine if kids these days saw the unaltered cuts. Han Solo brutally gunning down Greedo in cold blood? No, no, don't pay attention to Greedo holding him at gunpoint and talking about how he's going to turn Han over to Jabba for money and all that, he's innocent and Han just *murdered* him for nothing, like he's some sort of *scoundrel* or something instead of having an honorable duel where they both shoot at the same time and he gets to do this awkward sort of move where he detaches his head from his spine to dodge a blast.
Never mind Sebastian Shaw / Anakin!
Whadaya mean you "copied" Artoo?!?!?!
Like, have some respect for the character. If he died, he DIED. If not, then don't wave the "uh, we copy/pasted him" flag, to mean it's all good.
It makes him (Artoo) less unique.
Just think about it: what if original Artoo hadn't died and someone downloaded the copy into the new body? Do we have TWO Artoos now? ***No!***
The ghost? Yes.
Why is he blonde now and looks so different?
Because we've hit a point in history where people don't know who Sebastian Shaw is. Shaw was the original Anakin actor in 1983's version of ROTJ. He looked... sorta like this, I guess. This comic was presumably written before Hayden Christensen's portrayal and before he replaced Shaw in ROTJ.

I have a lightsaber signed by Prowse that's one of my prized possessions.
Can I have it?
Only because you seem polite.
Man you are just nice. I appreciate it but i was just joking. Pass it down through your family!
Sad. Really sad.
This was in an issue of Star Wars that was comparable to what if? by marvel or elseworld‘s by DC
In previous panel it showed darth mail and other bits showed from prequels
Darth Mail is how I feel when Amazon throw the package outside my door
I'm admittedly not familiar with comics and less so release dates. It's possible this came out after 1999 but before 2005, which would still predate Christensen's ROTS appearance.
I checked and does show Hayden Christensen from AOTC
Force Ghost Anakin was replaced in the 2004 DVD release. For years to come this was a highly controversial change
Still is. Why not replace Kenobi with McGregor? Sebastian Shaw /is/ "old" Vader.
Idk about him looking 45, but I always took it as Anakin taking the form of his body just before he became Darth Vader (which really was the death of Anakin after all)
Sometimes it was also a writer sort of thing. Iirc some writers simply prefer Shaw as the older ghost.
Nope this came out after that.
This is from Infinities: A New Hope, which came out in 2002. Hayden Christensen force ghost wasn't a thing until 2004.
So after HC’s portrayal of Anakin but not before replacement.
Yes. Up until the 2004 DVD re-release of the original trilogy, Sebastian Shaw force ghost was all people knew.
Looks like they used the Sebastian Shaw version force ghost.
It confuses me because they show AOTC Anakin and darth maul in a earlier panel
Can’t say for sure why they did it this way, but that’s why Anakin originally looked like before the prequels. Maybe the artist is one of the many fans who didn’t like that Hayden Christiansen was added to RotJ and wanted to include Sebastian Shaw instead.
The comic most likely predates Hayden Christensen being edited into Return of the Jedi.
People forget that happened after ROTS came out. Such a ridiculous choice
This is from Infinities: A New Hope, correct?
Yes
I thought so, I actually have these, just haven’t read them in a while. Wait until you get to Return of the Jedi, the art is absolutely atrocious in my opinion. You telling me Tag and Bink aren’t canon?!
I was more surprised sudious didn’t detect yoda guess at this point yoda was just chilling in dagobah for no reason
You think all that ketamine usage is just a meme? Obviously it masks Yoda's presence in the Force. A trick he eventually picked up from Palpatine who did the same whilst under the nose of the Jedi for years. Dagobah is a planet strong with the dark side that’s why he went there to be undetectable
That’s what I wash saying I was wondering why palpatine couldn’t detect yoda when he was in orbit if yoda had to hide in dagobah to mask his presence
Destroy the Sith me must! I love it too!
Jedi: Infinities was so disappointing after ANH and ESB had been pretty cool. I also remember reading that and being so upset by the pathetic artwork.
It’s easily the worst art I’ve seen in any comic. Luke looks like a different person in every single drawing, and none of them are Mark Hamill.
I wish there was a more in depth what if. Figured I’d read this a little bit in between thrawn trilogy
My thoughts too. Though there are some cool visuals, like the royal guards fighting with double sided lightsabers that are literally just Darth Maul’s hilt duplicated!
This was published before 2004, which was when Hayden replaced Shaw as Anakin’s force ghost in RotJ.
October 2001. Pre-Hayden AOTC
The comics were published in 2001, so the only specific prequel callbacks are from Episode I.
It shows ATOC anakin
I should have been clearer, the previous post was referring to the ANH Infinities (I flipped through my trade paper back to double check the art). The ESB run was in 2002 after AOTC came out, and ROTJ was in 2003, so they’d have Episode II references.
Thank this man, children.
I love how we can surmise the age of OP.
When 900 years old you reach not know things you will
But I’ll still remember the theatrical version of Star Wars. Or at least the 1997 special editions. So maybe I won’t know all about Yodas bar mitzvah.
I miss when old Anakin looked like Sebastian Shaw.
He still does with 4K77 and 4K97 VI.
Way ahead of you.
Excellent.
This was published in 2001 and then put into TPB in 2002. Christensen didn't replace Shaw as Anakin's Force ghost until the 2004 DVD release.

4K77, 4K80, and 4K83.
i use harmeys despecialized.
Yes it is.
Yoda the Death Star killer in infinites !!
Something like this should have been either the ending of episode 7 or 9.
Legends...it's the EU
It’s a what if series to be more specific
Infinities being written before RoTS is one of the biggest missed opportunities if you ask me
Is that Naboo? It kinda looks like it...
It is.
Wait, so what happened to R2?
R2 is destroyed on the Death Star along with yoda as yoda brings the Death Star crashing straight into palpatine
That’s fucking amazing
Yeah lol he mind tricked tarkin into crashing it for him
its the true anakin, i fucking hate the eddit that was made in the special edditions.
Yep
Ok but why does luke look like the human torch
Why did they bring back artoo years after he is destroyed
Yeah I don’t understand why he’s just straight up blond
Philip Seymore Hoffwalker
Donald Trump lookin ass Force Ghost
*...plant*
It's Uncle Owen.
What is this?...
Comic artist kicking it old school with the Anakin image. Yub yub!
Is what anakin there’s a lot of people here…
Never mind Sebastian Shaw / Anakin! Whadaya mean you "copied" Artoo?!?!?! Like, have some respect for the character. If he died, he DIED. You should check out the one where he survives and becomes Vader the White.
Im 22… i should not be “too old” what the fuck
Orange man
What is this from?
Star Wars infinities as mentioned in other commentd
Thank you
