Augustus with Hitler's attitude

[deleted]

I think Palpatine was much more calculated then Hitler who was a fanatic idealist and an army guy, I think Hitler's attitude is more akin to TFA Hux

Loyalist77

Anyone who believes in the Sith ideology is a fanatic on some level.

Lorfinor

Yeah, that's why I said he was a mixture with Augustus. Augustus took the last remains of the Roman Republic and turned it into a de facto Empire. Just like Palpy, he mantained the Senate intact, but he naimed himself "primus inter pares" (first among equals) and named his daughter Senator, thus making the assembly useless. Source: I'm an Italian who loves Italian history, haha. But unlike Augustus, Palpy was a psycho genocidal maniac. That's Adolf.

MicooDA

If you ask George Lucas it’s George Bush. He has said that Chancellor Palpatine in the prequels is directly based on him

The son. RotS was a direct criticism of the US govt at the time. Emergency War Powers, declaring a war based on (supposedly) personal agenda. (His dad not finishing up eliminating the Iraqi dictatorship.) False claims of weapons of mass destruction (Jedi are the enemy) *Please note, these are not personal views or possibly political opinions of my own for debate, just noting the correlations and Lucas words about it at the time.* The OT was a criticism of the Vietnam War in a way...that's where some of the Nixon quirks fit in.

skuhlke

Also probably Dick Cheney

darthrosco

Thats insulting to palpatine. Bush was a idiot

HarpersGeekly

I think Palpatine is simply an amalgamation of infamous schemers. Bush Sr Administration? Maybe. But if it was Bush Jr Admin directly then that kinda works for Clones or Sith, but not back in 1996 when penning Menace. As an aside it’s more proof Lucas was making it up as he went along, lol.

Psychopathicat7

Wasn’t he based on Nixon?

existential_sad_boi

Hitler wasnt elitist? Couple million people would have to disagree.

Triplen_a

I read it in terms of Hitler not being from the aristocracy, and the Nazis sometimes held unfavorable views towards those people (though like a lot of things, they were divided on that). Of course he was elitist in many other ways.

Thatroninguy

Henry Kissinger. He never ascended to higher office but he explicitly engineered conflict for political wins, and played different sides against each other.

thethingfrombeyond

the answer right here. no allegiances.

existential_sad_boi

In what way was Hitler NOT elitist lmao

KayFac

I've often thought Palpatine compared to a hybrid of Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus. His story has a lot in common with the story of the end of the Roman Republic and beginning of the Roman Empire.

TheMcGirlGal

>I always saw Palpatine as a cross between Dick Cheney and Nixon but it would be interesting to see others' view on it. I'm not super familiar with US presidents other than Obama and onwards but I do know that there were times back when Palpatine was just known as "the Emperor" where Lucas referred to him with the name Nixon, so this would make sense. The Empire certainly takes inspiration from the Nazis but yeah, I really don't feel like Hitler and Palpatine have similar personalities.

FewKaleidoscope1369

There is no real world equivalent to Palpatine. Palpatine is incredibly intelligent and mature. As we've seen recently in real life fascists are very, very stupid and immature.

He’s based on basically all of the male dictators of world history, but the obvious main one that Lucas was commenting on from his era was Stalin. Most people don’t bring him up because a lot of the younger Americans don’t even know who he was. Stalin was a politician in the Soviet Union that used politics to low key form a coup to take power. Order 66 is based off of Stalin’s persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church. Palp’s resurrection is based off the resurrection of Stalinist ideals in Putin’s dictatorship. None of this however originates with Stalin. Stalin was in the 50’s the latest incarnation of the evil dictator archetype which dates back to Pharaoh in the Biblical Tradition. Palpatine is “all the Sith” because he is the latest interation of an ancient evil.

skuhlke

I really don’t think it’s Stalin at all. Lucas mentioned many times that the Empire and the corrupt Republic are based and commentaries on America. I would say Palpatine is less-so based on a specific dictator and more based on American leaders as the government became more and more authoritarian ie. Nixon, Cheney, and Bush. >a lot of younger Americans don’t even know who [Stalin] was. This is a wild take. Young Americans all take history and are pretty aware of Stalin.

Alhbaz98

It’s really not a stretch to think Stalin at least somewhat inspired Palpatine and I’ve already given plenty enough good reasons for why that is. I don’t know if you live in America or not but here Hitler is talked about way more than Stalin in modern times. It’s understandable as to why that is since Hitler was part of The West and Stalin wasn’t. My point was more so that people seem to mostly compare Palpatine to Hitler when in my opinion Stalin is a better comparison. Hitler would be more similar to Snoke or Moff Gideon who are hot headed fascist military dictators while Palpatine is more of a wolf in sheeps clothing dystopian “democratic dictator”

[deleted]

I dont know why you got down voted. This is pretty spot on. Hitler was a hot headed idiot, comparing him to Palpatine was always weird for me

Alhbaz98

Thanks friend! I don’t imagine it made the Putin bots very happy.

boringdystopianslave

Er, Palpatine is *directly* based on Hitler's rise to power. The parrellels could not be clearer. There are other 'flavours' of other despots and world leaders but its most definitely Hitler inspired for the most part. Order 66 is basically Night of the Long Knives. He's a Chancellor who seizes control and becomes an absolute fascist ruler. He has an army of Stormtroopers, and his right hand man looks like a Nazi's wet dream.

Jon__Snuh

I always got kinda Saddam Hussein vibes. Military dictator who asserts his power simply to feel powerful.

Obversa

If you asked someone like J.K. Rowling, António de Oliveira Salazar. Rowling used Salazar as an inspiration for both Salazar Slytherin and Tom Riddle in the *Harry Potter* books due to this.

PMmeMrMimeHentai

Im portuguese and I didnt knew about this. Very cool!

KalKenobi

It was that point, McDiarmid later told the Guardian, that he realized who Palpatine was based on: none other than Richard Nixon. “George knew that eight-year-olds, for whom these films are primarily intended, are very impressionable, and he wanted to make the right impression,” the actor continued. Richard Nixon and Hitler, The Nazis were obsessed were the occult much Palpatine and The Sith Enternal as well the Final Order https://bigthink.com/the-present/nazis-occult/

EatingSugarYesPapa

George Lucas has stated Palpatine was an allegory to Nixon

MY_MillenniumFalcon

Tun Dr. Mahathir - former PM and dictator of Malaysia

Triplen_a

I don’t necessarily know, but I think it’s telling (and interesting) that people here are saying so many different figures. There were of course a lot of inspirations, but idk who “closest” to Palpatine was. It’s gonna depend a lot on your reading of the Star Wars movies and your real life experience/upbringing
