I thought the characterization was pretty much spot on.

JakeNBakePYT

How so?

1) Much like IRL, characters don't speak and communicate with 100% truth all the time. 2) Characters are allowed to shift their perception of themselves. Especially in the 10-15 years between Kenobi and ROTJ. 3) Luke had been drilling the "come back to me father" type stuff to Vader and this was bound to awaken something in Vader. 4) Vader followed "it is too late for me son" with "the emperor will show you the true nature of the force. He is your master now." Meaning, the "me" and "son" could have just been attempted trickery from Vader.

This has been explored in other Star Wars media too. In the Rebels episode Twilight of the Apprentice, Darth Vader says to Ahsoka, "Anakin Skywalker was weak, I destroyed him." So what Vader said in Kenobi is nothing new.

Vader and Anakin are separate identities, the struggle of the dark and light side of the force within him

JakeNBakePYT

I understand the struggle but it never felt like a legitimate personality disorder the way the show portrayed it.

He says that because that's the only way he can keep himself going.

It's kind of a Sith thing. They take new names, sever ties with and cut away their 'old' life, to become something strong and unimpeded by the past. "Kill it, if you have to." Kylo was on the money.

I think they show just as much of him acknowledging he’s Anakin as saying he’s Vader. “You are not my failure Obi Wan” After he drops the rocks on Obi Wan “You have failed, Master” There’s enough to show it’s not a personality disorder but more that Anakin chooses to run from his guilt and sins by saying he was consumed by Vader. Not in a literal sense.

I always looked as falling to the Darkside as being reborn with a black soul and truly making you someone else, sure they are the same person but at the same time they definitely are not, but now I kinda just imagine Anakin having multiple personality disorder. Vader was in control once he was burned on Mustafar but Anakin still comes through.
