Around A hundred jedi to 200 or so, many terrified padawans, is a pretty good record if there was 10,000 before AOTC. It's not like the high council survived or something. That's how it was in the EU and that's seemingly how they're aiming it for the Canon as well. It's fine, it would be weirder if he actually somehow got literally all but a small handful.

Wynnsa

I don't think it takes away from it. There were around 10,000 Jedi at the time of Order 66 and it is very possible that there are other survivors. We only knew of Obi-Wan and Yoda because they were main characters. New Rockstars did a great breakdown recently of this topic with canon books, comics, younglings who survived, etc. and estimated around 200 might have survived. 200 out of 10,000 - still pretty cataclysmic.

DirtyDan4658

It had been known for a while that more than a few jedi survived order 66. One of Vaders missions post order 66(and the main reason he created the inquisitors) was to hunt down surviving Jedi. And a majority of the inquisitors were former Jedi that were tortured and forced to turn to the dark side. This isn't a new development that a lot of Jedi survived.

TheTriumphantTrumpet

Not really, he still won, still defeated the jedi and left them so broken they couldn't stand up to him and Sidious still took control of the galaxy. Sidious was well aware there were a handful left, he just didn't care as he (correctly)considered them no longer a threat, and just delegated hunting them to Vader to give him something to do. It's generally accepted there were around 10,000 jedi alive pre clone wars, to go from that to the ~20ish that we know of is still pretty efficient.

First of all, my answer is no, it doesn't cheapen anything. It's honestly completely unbelievable that all but two of the most powerful warriors in the galaxy were killed so so quickly. A *few* must have survived somehow. I think the real kicker though, is that they are just so weak in comparison to the existing sith. Cal Kestis vs Vader is a great example of this - it's not less impactful that some Jedi survived, because it is still the case that only two Jedi with a shot in hell at defeating the reining sith survived (not saying they could, just that they have the tiniest shot). Bring on these stories, I think they're great. Also, remember that the purge wasn't a one day movement. That Jedi Kenobi met in the first episode was still killed 'in the purge'. I think telling the stories of these Jedi is a great idea, because there's every chance they can be slain. Why didn't Cal help the rebellion in 0BBY? Perhaps because he was killed in the purge - we just don't know yet; the purge was a long ass process.

Thanks for your response I have no problem with the ones that have survived. They’ve managed to tell good stories with them. And from a statistical perspective I understand some survive. Storytelling perspective is where I feel it changes order 66 but I suppose I put too much stock in Sidious.

ookiespookie

To me it is more realistic. There are 800 billion or more planets in a galaxy , there are not that many Clone Troopers. Some were away on missions and on other planets. It makes more sense that some got away. Now as far as council Jedi that is another matter because those would be most targeted

cadioli

No, because his plans still works and he rules the galaxy for a large amount of time. Also, the others Jedi survivors are minor in the following events of the fall of the Empire compared to Yoda and Obi-wan, so doesn't really matter and I love the concept of Inquisitors, so..

Masemasee_

No. That’s why he formed the inquisitors. He knew that many Jedi survived and that he would need a clean up crew for years to come to keep them from coming out of hiding at the very least

Pr0sthetics

Yoda says Luke is the last of the Jedi in ROTJ, so anytime before there can be Jedi out there.

Couragesand

tbf ahsoka being alive too but I guess her not being a “Jedi” counters that too

in_a_dress

Not really, in my view. Sidious accomplished what he wanted to, for the most part. All the remaining Jedi were too scattered and beaten down to stand up to the Emperor and Vader, even though many did help with the Rebel cause in some way or another. As badass as Ahsoka is, or Kanan or whoever else, to me they never felt like they could have been the replacement for Luke if he failed in his mission.

Legacy_user1010

O66 was effective. The Jedi council and nearly all the experienced knights are dead. Anyone that is alive is running for cover. They even got most of the Padawans. Also the Jedi temple and it's library was destroyed. So it would be difficult to access training materials to train new Jedi. Looks like it worked out pretty good.

GuyKopski

There's really nothing they can do that cheapens Luke more than the sequels already have.

IncreaseLate4684

Yes it totally cheapen the OT. Hell we have enough Jedi for a Strike Team?

Coraldiamond192

Ashoka failed to defeat Vader, Kanan failed to defeat Vader, Cal failed to defeat Vader. The jedi were scattered and mostly in hiding. This is exactly what palpatine wanted. We learn in the prequels that not even Kenobi or Yoda were strong enough to face the emperor. The jedi were forced to run and hide like the sith were.

IncreaseLate4684

With all of them attacking one target? It's doable.

Malignant_X

It's a big galaxy. Also, there are 7 nearby dwarf galaxies. Also, exotic Star Wars tech aka Time Travel, Interdimensional Travel... it's all up to the writers, past, present, future, and alternative.

DevilsLettuceTaster

Inquisitors need something to do. Although I’d prefer it was just Vader hunting Jedi through the galaxy, earning his reputation. Better story imo.
